  1. My daughter is allergic to soy. I do not allow her regular chocolate of any kind and instead make things from Enjoy Life Chocolate chips. She also has a dairy allergy. I do however allow her occasional treats with soy lecithin in them such as gluten-free ice cream cones and special cupcakes where the chocolate in the icing has soy lecithin in it. In the...
  2. The diabetes certainly would complicate things. Keep in mind if her blood sugar is too high or too low she will be hungry. As someone else already said, feeding her protein and fat with meals is essential to keeping full for longer. I am diabetic but do not use insulin so perhaps I have a bit more leeway with diet, at least between meals. But isn't...
  3. I don't know if these are the same or not. They didn't come from Whole Foods. The ones I bought are green. Daughter loved them!
  4. Arts and crafts can be a real problem. Stuff like pasta, wheat paste and food related things like gingerbread houses. Teachers don't always understand this because the kid isn't necessarily eating what it is they are using. However, I've volunteered to help with some of these projects and it's astounding how many kids will stick their fingers in their...
  5. And it has been in there for a while now! I knew of wheat glucose syrup because I saw some sorbet at Trader Joe's and wanted to buy it for my daughter. But when I saw that the glucose syrup was derived from wheat, I put it back. As for the Mentos, we thought they were one of the few candies she could safely eat. She has food allergies in addition to...
  6. This is a much debated topic here. And something you will have to decide for yourself. As for the list you have, it could have been made prior to the disclosure of the wheat and milk in the fries. I dunno. But my daughter is allergic to both wheat and milk. We will no longer eat there. They've just lied too many times for me to be comfortable with them...
  7. Maltodextrin is not gluten. However... McDonald's fries are a much debated topic here. Apparently the oil used to fry them in at some point contained wheat and milk. McDonald's tells us they are gluten free, although I can not follow the logic they use. Whether they are safe for you to eat or not is something you'd have to decide for yourself. As for...
  8. I know of two kinds of licorice that are gluten-free. Running Rabbit is one and it actually has the licorice flavor even in the cherry and raspberry flavors. I can get it at one of the local grocery stores. One that I've ordered online is Candy Tree Organic. It's fruit flavored and more like Twizzlers.
  9. Interesting! I have seen reference to that type of cheese before but didn't know what it meant. I live in an area where there aren't a lot of Italian people. My husband is Italian though and his family makes an Easter pie. Theirs is different though including a variety of cheeses including tuma, but they seem to simply throw in whatever cheese they have...
  10. That's one my daughter will not eat at all. She goes like their plain rice bread and she loves the one with the seeds and fruit in it.
  11. I would beware of those. Often there is a gravy or sauce on the meat or they use flour to brown the outside. Some hams have gluten in them. That being said if those were the only choices of meats, I'd go for the ham over the others. My daughter only has an allergy though and not celiac.
  12. Enjoy Life foods makes soy free chocolate chips. I usually buy them online, but I can buy them in one store here. It's just not a store that I go to very often and when I buy online, I really stock up. You can get unsweetened cocoa nibs or beans at the health food store. At least I can. These can be ground up and sweetened with some agave nectar, or...
  13. Thanks! I do know that they are supposed to declare the wheat, however... I saw some stuff at Big Lots and it's not necessarily the freshest stuff. Or manufactured in this country. So that kind of worried me. Then I got to craving tamales. I know these are not the best tamales around, but given my food allergies, one that I'm not allergic to. I don...
  14. Does anyone know if these are gluten free? They do contain modified food starch. I've always been leary of that unless I know the source and from what I've seen it doesn't list the source. Thanks!
  15. I used to eat a lot of soy. Tiger's Milk bars, roasted soy nuts, canned soybeans, vegetarian burgers and even Edamame. I developed a wacky thyroid problem where I'd go from from hyper to hypo and was really suffering. Then I read about the connection of soy to thyroid. I cut back on the soy. And as I did, my thyroid meds were also cut back. Only when...
  16. I would beware of those! Some are sweetened with malted grain and it says on some of the packages they can not guarantee that they are gluten free. I make my own chocolates using molds and Enjoy Life Chocolate chips. It's easy to do using the microwave. Simply heat the chips on 1/2 power, stirring every 30 seconds or so. You want to get them to the...
  17. My daughter is allergic to 7 foods. I am allergic to 3. One of mine is almonds, the other two we share. I simply do not eat almonds. She does and that's fine with me. Since she has so many, we have a special fridge for her and a special area set up with her food. This makes it easy for her to know which foods are safe for her to eat and would make it...
  18. I guess I am lucky in that my daughter eats most anything I send in and then whines to me that I didn't send enough of it for her. She has a BIG appetite. I too have the stainless steel containers. Just wish they were bigger. At the start of this year I bought insulated bowls that hold more food but they couldn't get the top off at school. The third...
  19. My daughter loves the Vance's Dari Replacer. She loves the chocolate, heated in a mug and topped with marshmallows. I also use the plain, dry powder in baked goods. Seems too sweet for cooking. On cereal, she uses rice milk, either plain or vanilla. We also use rice milk for making smoothies. In cooking, I find most of the substitutes are too...
  20. I get mine at the health food store. They buy them in bulk, store them in the freezer and package them as needed. They are the freshest ever!
  21. I add cubes of ham to it when I make it. Of course as luck would have it, I don't like ham either. But everyone else who has tried it this way has liked it. The ham and the mustard flavor seem to go well together.
  22. One that I've made that is always a big hit seems somewhat similar to the one already posted. Start with a pkg of largish shaped pasta. Cook till al dente, then rinse in cold water and cool. You will need a very big bowl for this because it makes a ton. Gently mix in the following: 1-2 cartons grape or cherry tomatoes Bell peppers, assorted colors...
  23. One way my husband likes it is served with a garlic pasta. I don't really have a recipe for this. I just cook it briefly in some olive oil then add a bit of chicken broth. I use several cloves of garlic, minced and also a little bit of parsley. Then I toss it with cooked spaghetti. He likes to let it sit for a day so all the garlic is absorbed in the...
  24. Daughter and I love the pumpkin seed bars from Go Raw: Open Original Shared Link She also likes the cashew Boomi Bars: Open Original Shared Link And she LOVES the cashew butter macrobiotic bars by these people: Open Original Shared Link
