ARCHIVED Need Menu Ideas
Juliebove replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We love stuffed potatoes. Daughter finds the largest baking potatoes she can. I either bake them in the oven, crockpot or microwave, then let cool enough to handle. Or sometimes I make these the day before and keep them in the fridge until ready to bake. Cut a slice off of the top of the potatoes and scoop out the insides, leaving about a 1/8" shell... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Makeup For My Daughter & Gluten Moods?
Juliebove replied to Benshell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is 11 now but she has always used adult makeup for recitals and even dressup, although for the most part she doesn't use it. I found that the kid's makeup stained. She has a wheat allergy and is also allergic to peanuts and almonds so I have to read all labels. She has contact allergies. But keep in mind that anything that goes on the face... -
ARCHIVED Breakfast/brunch Ideas?
Juliebove replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What is Hatfield sausage? I assume it's a brand. I've never seen it though. But that sounds like a good thing to make for Christmas breakfast. -
ARCHIVED Holiday Appetizers
Juliebove replied to rebe09's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Bacon stuffed cherry tomatoes. Just do a search, there are plenty of recipes out there. Hummus cups. Cut cucumbers (peeled or unpeeled) into inch high or so chunks. Scoop out the middle leaving a cup and fill with hummus. -
ARCHIVED Plz Post Your Christmas Dinner Ideas
Juliebove replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My mom told me we are having tacos. We will hash out the particulars of that when I visit there next. I presume there will be beans and rice with that. This is for Christmas Eve. I got some of the decorated cookies from this website for dessert. My mom may have something different. But with three diabetics, a nephew who hates sweets and a SIL who is... -
The gluten free label really doesn't mean much. I've bought stuff that says gluten free only to discover it was made on shared equipment with wheat. Or in the case of Rice Dream, processed with barley.

ARCHIVED Help For The World's Pickiest Eater
Juliebove replied to Dakko's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't do bones or seafood either. I am allergic to eggs, dairy and almonds. Also a diabetic so can't have too many carbs. And I'm not keen on sauces. I don't have the spicy restrictions though. We eat a lot of beans in this house. I eat them pretty much daily. Sometimes twice a day. I am also happy to eat the same things day after day so I don... -
I'm confused about that myself. I thought I saw on some list that it was made of wheat but then when I checked on the Internet, it said it could be made of soy. So I don't know. I just generally try to avoid foods that contain it. Mostly we buy organic foods.

ARCHIVED Diet Soda
Juliebove replied to KikiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know of any diet soda that contains gluten. Years ago one of the sugar free fruit flavored drinks (non bubbly) did contain gluten. Not sure if it was Minute Maid or Crystal Light. But I think that is no longer the case and it should be okay. -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
On one of the newsgroups I frequent, the Australian people were talking about eating sangers. I didn't know what this meant so I looked it up and it said it was short for sandwich. I asked how this could be short for that and they acted rather incredulous and said it was short for sangwich as it is usually called. Up until then I had never heard it called... -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I just found another one. I had forgotten about my coworker who said this all the time until I heard it on a TV show and then heard it again on the following one. Eek! What they said was, "You take and put it over there...". Or something like that. At any rate, it was the "Take and" part that I didn't get. -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There's a commercial on TV where the guy says "fith" instead of "fifth". Today I heard it on the radio. Drives me nuts! There's another radio commercial for a Chevrolet dealership where the guy says "ChevAlay". I've heard people say "Crishan" for "Christian". One woman even named her son that. I wondered why she would do that if she couldn't even pronounce... -
ARCHIVED Go-to Dairy Free Foods
Juliebove replied to kbtoyssni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We eat a lot of Mexican food without the cheese but sometimes I add a layer of canned creamed corn to things like enchilada casserole. Gives it a creamy texture. -
ARCHIVED Go-to Dairy Free Foods
Juliebove replied to kbtoyssni's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I do stuffed baked potatoes. These can be made ahead of time and put in the oven or if you're really in a hurry, the microwave when you're ready to eat. Scoop out the insides of a large baked potato, leaving a 1/8" shell. Mash with rice milk, olive oil, chopped green onion or chives, salt, pepper and a generous amount of nutritional yeast. Stuff back... -
My daughter and I had been ordering the green salads and bacon cheeseburgers with no bun and no cheese. Very good meal and I'm not a big burger fan, but I am of these. Husband said it was the best burger he ever ate. Then one day the counter person asked if we had wheat issues because they used wheat free soy sauce. So now daughter gets the teriyaki which...

ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My brother and I both put an "l" in the word "both". We say "bolth". I find it difficult to pronounce it any other way. My SIL is named Melanie. But her mother calls her Melnee. No "a" in there. My MIL pronounces Toyota in a very painful way. She sort of says "Tuh" and there is a pause then she says oytuh. Also in the area of PA where my husband... -
ARCHIVED Mother Diagnosed, Wont Go On Diet
Juliebove replied to ratty89's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good luck with that! Although my mother doesn't have celiac, she was diagnosed with many food allerigies and was told to avoid wheat and nightshades because of arthritis. She pretty much eat what she wants and then complains when she is sick or hurting. She doesn't think the food that she eats could possibly have a thing to do with it and even makes snide... -
Oat Beta Glucan
Juliebove replied to coriforia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If it's made of oats then chances are it's not gluten-free. -
I haven't been back since I posted. I did buy a card for my brother for helping me fix my daughter's computer. He has no food issues though. My favorite place for gluten-free dining is The Old Spaghetti Factory. Yeah, it's a limited menu and it's predictable. And a few times the food was really slow. Once they not only comped our meal but gave us a...

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Alone...first Mourning Experience
Juliebove replied to jensey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I remember our first Thanksgiving after daughter was diagnosed. We also have additional food allergies. Back then, I put broth in the potatoes instead of milk and olive oil instead of butter. They were not a big winner with the family. They did eat the gluten-free stuffing I made, but daughter didn't like it. The next year I made wild rice instead... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Lists Not Reliable
Juliebove replied to JBaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I could be wrong but I think those are the ones that say they are processed on the same lines as wheat or may contain traces of wheat or something like that. I bought them online twice from a place that said they were gluten-free. Nope! -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I went with my midwestern grandma to a Mexican restaurant and she ordered a burrito but she pronouced the "u" like the "u" in bureau. -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My 5th grade teacher said this. He was a real practical joker so we never knew if he was doing it on purpose or not. -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Lately I've noticed people on commercials and shows mispronouncing the words garden and gardens. They say it like it is two words. garrrr DENS. -
ARCHIVED Pet Peeve Regarding The Slaying Of The English Language.
Juliebove replied to Imanistj's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I was watching a cooking show and I swear the chef first said giblets with the hard "g" and then later said it right.
