  1. I think your anger is felt by a lot of us here. The losses that you mention are hard to get over. I personally was undiagnosed for at least 30 years too (symptoms started at 17, diagnosed at 47) and I have some lasting health issues, but I feel so blessed that I was able to have two healthy kids - that would be hard to realize that celiac affected fertility...
  2. For thrush, I heard to eat yogurt a couple times a day. Unprocessed yogurt with lots of probiotics. For canker sores, it sounds weird but my brother, who is an MD told me years ago that eating garlic would help canker sores heal faster and he's right. I eat lots of raw garlic - like hummus or dip - and also try to eat more cooked too. The sores heal...
  3. I think you've hit it entirely. BTW, I love your signature. Janis rocks!
  4. For the cornmeal, it's a storage and transport issue in the U.S., I think, where the corn is stored in silos that have previously had wheat, barley, rye...and ground on shared equipment. Polenta is sold pre-made in the US and would be subject to the issue above unless made with special gluten-free cornmeal. Is your polenta in SA made out of cornmeal...
  5. Yes, I've seen the gluten-free and regular side-by-side and the regular is darker, but I wouldn't rely on that alone if I was going to eat it.
  6. I don't want to contradict you Marz, but I see you're in South Africa and I think the OP is in the US. Polenta, maize meal (cornmeal)is a processed food and in the US is NOT gluten free unless you buy special versions marked gluten-free (Bob's Red Mill is the only gluten-free cornmeal I've seen, and it's not available everywhere. Their regular cornmeal...
  7. Diane and others who are having their first gluten-free Thanksgiving/Christmas/hanukkah/New Years: You can develop new traditions or find recipies/sources for 99.9% of your previous treats. There are great recipies out there for turkey with stuffing, pies, cookies, gravy, even Yorkshire Pudding (an English/Scottish Christmas favorite of mine). ...
  8. I believe that I developed celiac at age 16. They were testing me for RA then (it was negative but I think there was a connetion) and I don't remember stomach problems before that. That is also the first time I remember having canker sores. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 47, so that's a good 30 years of stomach problems, joint problems, mental health...
  9. That's what I was told too, and I still always triple-check. I haven't been glutened in about 20 times in six different restaurants across the country.
  10. Yes, that's a great idea. I do that too at potlucks where there are, for example, cut up fresh fruit and veggies or purchased dips or hummus.
  11. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... but all it takes to contaminate mashed potatoes is one person putting the stuffing spooon into the potatoes. All it takes to contaminate the plate of veggies is for someone to drop a roll into the bowl or tear a roll over the appetizer. The permutations of Cross contamination are endless, sad to say. Bringing...
  12. Bumping this up for comments. Any other members diagnoed with this? I had my colonscopy last week and am expecting the results soon.
  13. Stacy, I think I'm going to have to do the same. I've been avoiding it but it's going to be Paleo for me all the way. Your 20 pounds in 3 weeks would be a miracle if it works for me too.
  14. I had the same pain and had all the same tests. Negative on anything that could cause pain. Pain went away after I was reliably gluten-free - maybe 2-3 months. Hope your pain goes away soon.
  15. I was talking about fast food when I talked about Chipotle. I don't eat fast food normally, although I have eaten (very few things) at Wendy's, Chik-fil-a, Taco del Mar, PFChangs. Chipotle is one of the easiest places to be gluten-free, but you have to research. Search on the Restaurant thread...sorry I don't have time to post it all now. I do eat at...
  16. I would suggest asking for iron shots. Did they test for b vitamin and vit D deficiencies (I'm too lazy to look at your post to check...) Some people benefit from sublingual B-vit supplements (helps boby to absorb) but I think there are b-vit and Vit-D shots too. Check it out. I hope that the endoscopy helps them find out what is wrong. But whatever...
  17. Melissa, I once got "glutened" from a diet pepsi (fountain drink) from Dairy Queen. I hadn't had anything to eat in four hours and got sick within five minutes of drinking the pepsi, so it had to be that. I think the DQ person put his/her hand into the top of the cup or dropped a bread crumb in by accident. I stay away from most fast food places and agree...
  18. The scope would be useless for you...you've been gluten free. Unless you want to do a gluten challenge - 2 or 3 months with multiple servings of wheat/gluten daily and then do the scope. You could have gene testing or try enterolab. Or try a gluten challenge and use those results to prove to your doc and your family that gluten makes you sick.
  19. Hi Coolclimates, Portland is good. Seattle has a lot too, and if you're in Portland for a month you should take a trip to Seattle. Amtrack runs daily and is a nice trip, so you can come even if you don't have a car. Seattle has Ener-G foods (used to be a customer of mine), just south of downtown Seattle close to the train terminal. Open Original Shared...
  20. You can see some info in my signature. My son went gluten-free/DF and has done great, but it was six months before he went into puberty (he was 15.5) and he began to grow after that. Prior to going gluten-free/DF his bone age was 12.5 and he looked like a 12 year old. At 15, he weighed 96 pounds and had only gained four pounds in the years between age...
  21. Dana, I too have had times when stress made me have to run and also to worry where to find a bathroom. I also have bad tummy trouble just from stress, even without gluten: I think it's from 20+ years of being undiagnosed. On the not wanting to leave the house, I can certainly sympathize. I'm hoping Ravenwoodglass will pop in here in a bit and give...

    ARCHIVED Ataxia

I'm sure others with more knowledge than I will join in, but here's my $0.02 worth: If you are truly gluten-free (and you may have to be very strict), you are giving yourself the best chance to get better. I'm assuming that you've seen a doctor about the clumsiness and that the doc had no useful info for you. Based on my experience, eat mostly whole foods...
  23. Mine went away too. It was one of the wide variety of things I had wrong with me pre-diagnosis (frequent mouth ulcers/canker sores, anxiety, joint pains) that I would not have known were connected. I, too, am so happy that these problmes went away. I hope others have this same good experience.
  24. I just call their customer service number from the store before I buy anything. I used to use only Clinique but too much of their stuff has gluten so I use Neutrogena more. The Clinique number is 1-866-707-2100.
  25. I find breakfast places easier than say a sandwich shop or pizza place for lunch. In fact, I can't remember getting a bad meal for breakfast (and I'm pretty sensitive IMHO). I usually get an omlette or eggs over easy (cooked in a clean pan) with bacon strips or fresh fruit. I took a risk and had grits at a southern diner place in North Carolina and didn...
