				ARCHIVED Chamomile Tea --Confused?
ravenwoodglass replied to Chakra2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The best way to find out for sure is to call the company and ask. Celestial Seasonings teas will say gluten free on the box if they are safe and the rare times I drink tea those are the ones I look for. Don't know about other brands. -

				ARCHIVED Tarte Cosmetics
ravenwoodglass replied to minniejack's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do these products contain soy? I have an allergy to soy (it gives me rashes) and have a hard time finding stuff that is soy and gluten free. -

				ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge
ravenwoodglass replied to JennyC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree, he was already diagnosed. If the GI wanted to do biopsies they should have been done after the positive blood work and before the diet was started. I would discontinue the challenge, let the doctor know what the results were and get him back on the diet. Did the doctor redo the blood work before the challenge was started? Having that become negative... -

				ARCHIVED Positive Blood Test
ravenwoodglass replied to shamrock62081's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree completely with this. For years my gut symptoms were on and off before they became a daily and nightly issue but there was a lot of other stuff going on that I didn't know was celiac related until they resolved on the diet. Those included mood issues, bone and joint pain that eventually developed into arthritis that caused permanent joint deformities... -

				ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
ravenwoodglass replied to hazeleyez682's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I personally would not take a 'handful' of anything without a doctors supervision. Just because something is purchased over the counter does not make taking multiple doses at once safe. DH is caused by antibodies depositing within the dermal layers not the intestine. Once the gluten is in the system and DH is active the only thing that will get rid of them... -

				ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed
ravenwoodglass replied to hazeleyez682's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This does sound like it could be DH. As another poster said do avoid topicals with gluten ingredients and also avoid iodine in supplements for now. I could be wrong but from what I know of excema, my DD had it, it doesn't sound like that is what it is. You could go to a derm while the lesion is active and have them do a biopsy for DH. They would biopsy the... -

ARCHIVED Kettle Cuisine And Glutenfreeda Products
ravenwoodglass posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I recently started back to college to finish the degree that was cut short by celiac in '97. Finding time to cook and the energy after summer classes, (each day equals a week in the regular semesters) was really tough and I would be so tired some days all I was eating was a pnut butter sandwich, like that was it for the day. Yea I know not good and I lost... -
Don't try to replace your favorites for a bit. Also many of us go through a withdrawl period, it will pass and is likely contributing to your depression. There is a bit of a greiving process when newly diagnosed. For now concentrate on all the stuff you can eat. Rice, beans, fresh meats and chicken, seafood if you like it, fruits, veggies, chocolate that...

				ARCHIVED Migraines After Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to melblondin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I take a generic drug that Sandoz makes because the name brand isn't gluten free. I have had no issues with it. I can't of course say for sure that yours or any other they make wasn't CC'd somewhere down the line since they don't test but I would feel safe taking it. -

ARCHIVED Soy Candles With A Soy Allergy?
ravenwoodglass replied to Chakra2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do you have a soy allergy or intolerance? If it is an allergy I would stay away from them. I have a soy intolerance and do have a couple of these candles and have no issues. One oddly enough says it can be used as a lotion, you burn it and then blow out the candle and use the liquid as a lotion. That I don't do. -

				ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge
ravenwoodglass replied to JennyC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Call your ped to ask about the pepto, that is the safest thing to do. If memory serves me Gas-X is not gluten free so do be sure to check into that. It doesn't sound like the challenge and biopsy are worth the pain he is in. -
Perhaps but you never know unless you try. If she has a computer bring her here or sit her down at yours. If you were diagnosed by your doctor take her to a serious sit down with the doctor and let him/her talk to her, if the doctor is knowledgeable themselves. If she is unwilling to learn there is nothing you can do but protect yourself by bringing safe...

ARCHIVED Newly Gluten Free And Depression
ravenwoodglass replied to Coinkey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If your going to get tested by conventional blood tests and biopsy you will need to spend at least 2 months back on gluten. Not a great way to spend your summer. Looks like your challenge was definately positive. How sick you want to be to possibly get a doctor derived 'official' diagnosis is up to you but do be aware that even with the challenge you could... -

				ARCHIVED Kinnickinnick Hamburger Buns
ravenwoodglass replied to AlysounRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That may work for you. If not you could always go with a patty melt, which is simply a cheeseburger on bread rather than a bun. -

ARCHIVED Wheat DNA Used To Grow Indangered American Chestnut Trees
ravenwoodglass replied to Lisa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I hope they are successful. I still remember the day they cut down the chestnut from our front yard, I was so sad to see it go and as I was so young I didn't understand why. I could be wrong but I don't think the engineering would leave the fruit unsafe for us. -

				ARCHIVED The Truth Begin Annatto?
ravenwoodglass replied to alissar's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Allisar, I would drop it in case you are sensitive to it. I tend to lean toward uncolored cheese. Hopefully that will solve your problems. Peter, that is the cutest little kitten! I wonder how long before he grows into those ears. LOL -

				ARCHIVED Desperate For Help
ravenwoodglass replied to looking4help's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The blunted villi are diagnostic of celiac. Your GI in my opinion is clueless. I am glad to hear you are gluten free as you need to be. I would not keep eating gluten as you really are diagnosed even though your doctor didn't come right out and say so. Please do tell us what your diet is typically like. You should be eating as much whole food as possible... -

				ARCHIVED Kinnickinnick Hamburger Buns
ravenwoodglass replied to AlysounRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wrap them in foil, no need to moisten as they will have ice crytals, and put them into a warm oven at 350-375 and check them at about 5 minutes. If still not warm and soft give them another minute or two. I do this if I am cooking fries in the oven and it is on anyway. After they are warm I like to put on a little butter and toast the cut side in the pan... -

ARCHIVED Need Diet Soda, No Aspartame
ravenwoodglass replied to MyMississippi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A statement like this really should be backed up with links. I would suggest folks that are concerned do a search with the words 'splenda and adverse reactions' A lot will come up and then people can decide whether they want to use this. -

				ARCHIVED Testing Plan
ravenwoodglass replied to Carli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
30 to 60 should be enough time as long as you are strict with the diet. Make sure you eat mostly fresh food and IMHO it is best to stay away from alcohol and restaurants during this time. Also make sure that you are taking the proper precautions at home, your own dedicated toaster, not baking with gluten flours for others, not sharing stuff like pnut butter... -

				ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing & Validity?
ravenwoodglass replied to vbecton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If someone doesn't get relief from the diet then they would go back to the doctor for more testing. Most who have the severe issues that are caused by Chrons or UC have already had colonoscopies to rule those out as the symptoms are severe. My doctors were sure I had Chrons or UC because of how far my symptoms had progressed but the colonoscopy showed I didn... -

				ARCHIVED Enterolab Testing & Validity?
ravenwoodglass replied to vbecton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Then those folks would go back to their doctor for more testing although by the time most go to Enterolab those conditions have already been ruled out. Celiac and gluten intolerance can occur along with other conditions and noone here is going to say they don't. And what about the reverse. We see a lot of folks diagnosed with ulcers, for example, who get... -

ARCHIVED Newly Gluten Free And Depression
ravenwoodglass replied to Coinkey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am sorry I didn't address this question in my first reply. Only you can decide if it is worth it. It seems you had a clear reaction to your inadvertant gluten challenge, don't be surprised if you have some nasty stomach issues within a couple of days. One thing to consider is that celiac has a strong genetic link. If your sister is diagnosed the chances... -

ARCHIVED New Parent Coping With Celiac With Daughter
ravenwoodglass replied to sandy-swanson1103's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Sandy and welcome. Read as much here as you can and ask any questions you need to. Dove and Suave will clearly label gluten containing ingredients. If you prefer organic Giovanni and Burts Bees are good. There are others of course. I like Tom's of Maine toothpaste but I think crest and colgate are safe, but I could be wrong. With toiletries some... -

				ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed
ravenwoodglass replied to hazeleyez682's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Great idea but wouldn't having the wheat flour in the dedicated room be a better way? If they cook gluten free stuff and then walk it through the area where the wheat flour is floating around then folks would still be breathing in the wheat flour particles and it would be drifting down onto the gluten-free food also. I cooked at a restaurant a long time ago...
