ARCHIVED Digestion Of Fats
mushroom replied to Gfresh404's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would suggest some digestive enzymes. I take one called v-zyme by Pharmax which contains amylase, protease, lipase, bromelain, cellulase and lactase. In testing by Diagnos-Techs it was discovered that my pancreas was not putting out enough enzymes, and the supplements have helped enormously. I don't take them all the time, but whenever I start having... -
ARCHIVED New Here And Self Diagnose
mushroom replied to HopeNFaith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to our little community. You don't sound simplistic at all. If gluten bothers you it is very smart to eliminate it. I am also self-diagnosed, with a family history of gluten intolerance--self-diagnosed/celiac--diagnosed. My celiac neice also has severe CFS, my intolerant sister has osteoporosis which she is working on correcting, I have psoriatic... -
Not as crazy as it might sound to others. We gave one to my sister as a Christmas present She is extremely sensitive to herbicide and pesticide sprays and was becoming a prisoner in her home. Initially she wore it down the drive to get the mail and the newspaper, then when she was out gardening. She says it really works. We recently had to trrack down...

ARCHIVED Seen A Rheumatologist...
mushroom replied to num1habsfan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you're feeling that bad on one, I can't imagine what you'd feel like on two! Can't you call his office and ask for something else that doesn't make you feel so bad. I remember back in the good ol' days when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was prescribed Elavil (or something similar, this was back in the 80's) at a low dose that was supposed to... -
I use my normal baking mix flour, which is a combination of rice/tapioca/potato starch, and no one has ever noticed the difference. (This mix does not have any gum in it.)I do not know the proportions of each since I buy it in bulk from a gluten free bakery.

ARCHIVED Complete Recovery?
mushroom replied to Anthony22's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
a There is light at the end of the tunnel, Anthony; but I suspect the tunnel is a little longer than you anticipated, and it may have some bends in it along the way before you see that light. The healing process itself can be quite a long one, some say it could take up to two years for the villi to be totally restored, although you should feel much better... -
My husband once put his hands on the face of a woman to give her a kiss on the cheek and she recoiled in horror and spent the next ten minutes in the bathroom scrubbing her face, afraid he had eaten a sandwich for lunch, Yep, she was a DH sufferer.

ARCHIVED What Are The Types And Preferences?
mushroom replied to doodle's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a local gluten free bakery which has just started making a buckwheat bread. I don't know what additional flours they used along with the buckwheat since I am on my first trial loaf, but it is delicious and a lovely brown colour, looks like whole wheat. There are other flours that also impart different flavours. I made a recipe from Karina, the... -
ARCHIVED What Next?
mushroom replied to mjhurd31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The additional testing normally done for celiac, besides the full celiac panel, is an endoscopy by a gastroenterologist, where they visually inspect the lining of the small intesting and take biopsy samples to see whether the villi (small hair-like protrusions) are flattened. However, this test too is not completely accurate and can give false negative results... -

I think Great Smokies changed their name to Genova. -
ARCHIVED Long Rant..just Having To Vent About My Appointment
mushroom replied to chasbari's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't think that too many rheumatologists are aware of the link between celiac and RA. My first one wasn't, for sure. I think everyone with one of the known associated auto-immune diagnoses should be tested for celiac, but then again, I am not paying for them I am not sure if it is a monetary issue, or ignorance. I dumped my first rheumy who was of... -
ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
mushroom replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We tend to follow Aussie practices fairly closely here. I have absolutely no problems getting anything I want, including letters from specialists sent to my PCP. Call your govt. health department, whatever it is called there, and find out what their policy is, and try to get it changed if it is negative A patient has a right to know these things--it... -
ARCHIVED Foot Or Leg Cramps Anyone?
mushroom replied to ranger's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get leg and foot cramps at the same rate now as I did before gluten free. I always put it down to a lack of fitness. I might try the soap, however wild the idea seems. I always cramp WHEN I stretch. -
ARCHIVED Could Sensitivity Be Directly Related To Diet Compliance?
mushroom replied to Mike M's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could be right. When we first start out we don't know how sensitive we are. I for one was deathly afraid of eating out because of fears of cc. Even now, I can probably count on my fingers (without using toes) the number of times in 16 months I have eaten in restaurants. But I am getting bolder, because I can honestly say that I have never suffered... -

ARCHIVED I Just Got My Results Back From The Biopsy...
mushroom replied to Jamie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I lost 44 lbs, have been able to cure my vitamin deficiencies (caused by the celiac), have normal BM's instead of diarrhea, and cholesterol levels have remained the same. I think what happens when you start eating gluten free depends on where you start, your own individual metabolism, and too many variables to make any generalization on the subject -
ARCHIVED What European Contry Did Coeliacs Originate From?
mushroom replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know this is off-topic, but is used as an illustration of how much we don't know about early peoples. And I did not pay enough attention to be able to give a reference, but read in the newspaper recently that there is archeological evidence that, way BC, peoples used to get milk from horses. This would seem to throw the Paleo diet into a little bit of... -
ARCHIVED Husband Trying To Quit Smoking
mushroom replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am sorry your husband is having so many other problems, and I am sure you will help him through this one too Good luck to you both. I was, if you found my post critical in any way, merely trying to point out that the smoking addiction can be very strong; giving up gluten was a breeze in comparison. Give him a hug and a kiss, and one from me too... -
ARCHIVED Husband Trying To Quit Smoking
mushroom replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Some further thoughts, looking back. I had "tried" to quit many times. The only way I did it was to wake up one morning and say to myself, "You have already smoked your last cigarette." It sounds to me like your husband is committed; I think you should let him do it his way. Nobody told me how to quit. When you are ready, you just do it, whatever it... -
ARCHIVED Husband Trying To Quit Smoking
mushroom replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
No, quitting smoking is really, really hard. It was without doubt the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but also the best thing for myself I ever did. I had smoked for twelve years, two packs a day, and was totally addicted. And I quit cold turkey, back before the days when they had patches, nicorette gum, or e-cigarettes. And I did it while... -
Several of our magazines down here, even the food section in the newspaper, have started including some gluten free recipes. Yeay!!

Ground Floor Cafe on Riccarton Road did a great job for me. I used to eat there in my gluten-eating days, it was always a favourite. But then I saw them listed on gluten free and thought I would give them a try again. They have appeared on the list of the ten best cafes in New Zealand. Anything on the menu can be ordered gluten free and they do seem...

ARCHIVED Couldn't Tolerate The Gluten Challenge
mushroom replied to Swansong's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Swansong, and welcome to the forum. Nothing! could have convinced me to resume eating gluten to get tested. The results of being gluten free were good enough for me. I don't give a hoot what the tests could have showed. You will find there are quite a few of us.
