  1. There are several Paleo bloggers if you need menu inspiration. Elana's pantry is paleo friendly, Darwin's Table or Free the Animal have menu ideas. I've read that brief elimination diets will not cause nutritional deficiencies. You need a plan and you need to stick to it so that you can get the job done. The potential payoff is worth the effort. Diabetics...
  2. I have not done this, but I have read up on it. I did a reduced glutamate diet for migraines a few years ago that was fairly effective. In the end, gluten was what really needed to go! Recently I was very close to starting the Failsafe diet when my chemical sensitivity was really bothering me. before I could start, I saw an improvement. At the time, I...
  3. Indian cuisine often uses ghee, a form of clarified butter, that is casein free.
  4. tough to do any lit searching for this because the terms are so commonly used together. Might be worh trying the Elisa gluten home test kit.
  5. How's your blood sugar? The doctor will check your fasting glucose, but what you really want to know (to rule it out as an issue) is what your blood sugar levels look like 1 and 2 hours after various meals and snacks. You can have a blood sugar problem that is causing or aggravating neuropathy without diabetes and without having an abnormal fasting glucose...
  6. Are there cards for multiple food intolerances? No gluten, no casein for example. Ideally - no gluten, casein, soy or egg.
  7. Although it is almost certainly a gluten issue, here are some other options. Have you had your thyroid and vitamin d checked? The food diary is a great idea. Track how much sleep and exercise you get too.
  8. Your spouse sounds a lot like mine! My husband hates doctors too. He does not have celiac, the biopsy was negative. But his moods improved when he quit eating gluten. Gluten seems to make him mopey, unmotivated and tired. (he was anemic.) He also felt anxious, much smaller matters bothered him and for longer, and he was much less optimistic than his usual...
  9. You lost most of your migraines?? that is so cool! Mine are gone too. I went gluten-free to support my spouse, sure, but a big part of it was that, to be perfectly honest, is that I knew was too lazy to attempt a "mixed" household. I knew I would screw up. gluten-free seemed so much easier. And then I got the huge bonus payoff - no migraines!!! I also have...
  10. my spouse's biopsy report sounds somewhat similar. He had this done after a 3 month gluten challenge. Before that he had been gluten free for 2 months and very low gluten for 6 months before that. The report said: duodenum had valuvulae with "diminished prominence" (ie, flatter than usual) So that day, the GI said what he saw was "suggestive." The final...
  11. Any and ALL food suggestions are greatly appreciated. I'm assuming you like to cook. The only lower-carb gluten-free packaged treat I've been really happy with are Tanka Bars. I've gotten lots of good recipes from the Bernstein Diabetes Forum (very low carb and many of them are gluten-free friendly). Before DH gave up casein, there was a really nice...
  12. I've just been reading the testing plan outlined in Joneja's Dealing with Food Allergies. She explains how to eliminate and test for foods that cause allergy (you need an epi-pen) and intolerance. Her testing calls for eating yolks throughout the day, in increasing amounts. For an adult, she suggests 1/2 yolk in the morning, 1 at noon and 2 in the evening...
  13. I have not checked these products for anything except gluten. I have used various combinations of these three: Biotech Vitamin D3-50 (50,000 IU - 100 Caps) Carlson Solar D Gems Vitamin D3 4,000 IU Soft Gels Carlson Vitamin D Drops -- 2000 IU - 11 mL I have read that some peope absorb the oil based forms of vitamin D better. I read this on the Heartscan...
  14. It would be interesting to know if the vitamin D plays a role for you. I hope you will post back to this thread. Good luck!
  15. Shortly after I went gluten-free, the allergist told me I was allergic to formaldehyde and phenols (ie fragrances.) For what it is worth - In the last 6 months I started having more and more problems with fragrances, that is, the allergies seemed to be getting worse. In the last month, I have become much less sensitive. I've only made 2 changes - more...
  16. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution has some info/tips on gastroparesis and there is some discussion on the Bernstein forum, including helpful supplements, etc.
  17. Also, I'm a runner, too - there seems to be a lot to learn about the gluten-free diet and exercise nutrition. I've learned a lot here, and am hoping that if I look hard enough, I'll find a book about it. Have you heard of any?
  18. These are a nice change, a bit spendy, but who wants to eat buffalo and cranberry every day? They made by a Lakota tribe. www.tankabar.com When I wrote for info, this is what they sent back: The Tanka Bar is certified Gluten Free. The Tanka bar has been tested for Gluten with a third party independent certified laboratory, and tested below...
  19. I haven't tried it, but there's a product at www.countryfreshfarms.com that is a whey based milk. They claim to cater to the lactose and casein intolerant.
  20. Unless it just seriously freaks you out, why not get a meter? You do not have to have a doc's permission or insurance or anything to get a glucose meter and do some testing on your own. Using the info at bloodsugar101.com you can use the test strips efficiently and economically and this doesn't have to be a long term project necessarily. If lower carb...
  21. I understand that folks are worried about your vision, but I am actually more concerned that you could end up in the hospital. Could you afford to have a T1 diabetes dx as a pre-existing condition? Probably not. It is best to avoid getting a dx until you are insured and you could get an ER dx at this rate. You need to get your blood sugar under control...
  22. I've only taken the gluten and casein tests at Enterolab. gluten was positive, casein negative. Healthier without Wheat - good book for you and your spouse My Chronic Daily Headache (24/7 for over a year) is gone since going gluten-free. My migraines improved then and improved even more when I went dairy free in support of my spouse. My main triggers...
  23. Fruits have a lot of salicylates. After you rule out blood sugar issues, you could look into the fail safe diet if moderate quantaties also cause symptoms. Blood sugar is the priority here, though.

  25. Perhaps you're thinking of "Healthier without Wheat"? It is an excellent book, IMO, He would advise the diet be just as strict for gluten intolerance as celiacs. Good luck getting rid of or ameliorating all of your health issues!
