  1. Where do you camp at? There are a bunch of camps up the hill from our farm that my grandparents sold years ago. They are on Rt 337 about 5 miles from town. Heck, my dad knows so many of the people that own the camps. There are several people he knows from the Pittsburg area.
  2. I went to Tidioute, PA a small town in Warren County. I did most of my shopping in Warren and went to Jamestown, NY since it is just across the state line by 45 min from the farm. I lived in Mercer until I was 10 and after that my dad bought the family farm. It's nice to go back to your roots I don't get back there as often as I would like. My dad is...
  3. Some of you should feel fortunate to have doctors that will address/treat your low ferritin. Mine has been chronically low (was 4 and has never gotten above 6) since spring of '07 (if not longer that's when I actually got tested). I have tried oral iron otc and rx and it gives me wicked heartburn. I have not supplemented since then. I feel that I am a...
  4. The lara bars are alright at best for a quick snack or something to stash in the car for an emergency. I like the Kind Bars and to me they taste great. Most are gluten free, but there are a few varieties that are not. If they are it is labled on the front of the wrapper. I also like Enjoy Life Sunbutter Crunch bars. My 8 yo son likes them too, much to...
  5. I have noticed on their site if you click on ingredients it will say something to the effect like "does not contain gluten ingredients" I am going to assume that if that statement (or however it is worded)is not on there then it is not gluten free. My husband fixed the same ones and I would not eat them. here is the ing list for the bold chili cheese...
  6. I am glad to report that I had a sucessfull vacation at my parents house. This was my first visit to PA since being diagnosed. I cleaned a section of the counter for myself to prepare all the shared food and mine. I didn't get glutened once which is amazing since there were crumbs everywhere I turned around. My mom and I were pretty diligent. I couldn...
  7. I can sympathize. While I was on vacation to visit my parents I attended a local rib festival that my brother was competing in. Everything smelled soooo.. good. I couln't have any of the ribs, funnell cakes, fries etc. I did take a chance and I had some cotton candy and taffy and was fine with both. I just ate before I went so I was not hungry. It was...
  8. I too tried the same brand of gluten free oats. I made apple spice cookies with it in. They tasted sooooo good but within a 1/2 hour I had really sour burps and a lot of gas/bloating. I tried some again the next day and the same thing happened. Then that evening I was in a lot of pain from all the intestinal gas. Then to top it all off I got the C for...
  9. The ct barium is sorta the consitency of well um, snot. It can give people diarrhea as it seems to be a common complaint I hear from my patients. There is contrast you drink that you mix with water and it causes more water to be drawn into the bowel. It can give you the D too. The thick barium they use for the upper gi series, barium swallow, small bowel...
  10. Getting the thyroid checked is a good idea. You need them to run a TSH, T3, T4, free T3, free T4, and tests for thyroid antibodies. Also you need to get checked for other deficiencies, like iron, b12, folic acid, vitamin d, vitamin K, etc. I felt better going gluten free but really felt great once I started supplementing with vitamin D. My levels were...
  11. I found all the mixes at our local Food Lion here in TN. The Food City and Walmart did not have them. I haven't checked Ingalls yet. I bought the yellow cake mix and the brownies. I made the brownies and, with the exception that I'm having oven issues and over baked them slightly, they turned out great. They were chewey and fudgey with chunks of chocolate...
  12. Are you having hypo or hyper symptoms? Treatment for the two are very different. I don't know much about hyper treatments except sometimes antithyroid meds, thyroid ablation, or surgery can be used to treat symptoms. I have hypothyroidism caused by hashimotos disease an autoimmune disorder. I take levothyroxine (generic synthroid) and liothyronine (generic...
  13. I was talking to someone I work with. We were talking about our kids. One of hers was diagnosed type 1 diabetic at age 5 and her other one has had severe reflux issues. We were talking about diet restrictions and various topics and I had my ah ha moment. I had my second son in Dec. 04. I breastfed him until he was 16 months old. I immediatly eliminated...
  14. I lost 10 lb before my endoscopy (about 1 month) but I think I was worring about it. That said I was overweight before diagnosis, then lost that 10 lb, and after going gluten free have gained it back and a few more.
  15. Funny I always wondered also and sorta just figured out by the context around it. Didn't know the actual words the abbreviations were for though.
  16. I have two diabetic neighbors that I like to bake things for. I bought some splenda to use in baking. They seemed to enjoy the baked goods, but I found the aftertaste it left in my mouth discusting. My mom thought the same thing. I have been enjoying honey, which I used to dislike when I was younger. I still use regular sugar and such. EDIT: For...
  17. In my opinion it is no worse than regular sugar. Have you ever seen how they process that? I watched a show on it's production very interesting. Some people can tolerate some things better than others. Everything in moderation. If it makes you feel bad then you are doing the right thing by avoiding it. 18. My doctor said that my small bowel didn't look too bad only minor changes and he did not think the biopsy would be positive. Well when they called with the results it was positive. So they really can't tell by visually looking at it unless it is really bad. They need the histology for that. The biopsy can have its limitations, and with positve antibodies...
  19. After my endoscopy the doctor came in and told me what he found from the visual inspection. He told me I had distal esophagus inflamation, a normal appearing stomach, mild abnormal looking duodenum, that he took a biopsy from the stomach for h pylori and six samples of tissue for the small bowel biopsy and that he did not really think it was celiac but...

    ARCHIVED Understanding

So here is a little update. Most people still look at my stuff and think it is yucky. I've made some pretty good stuff, so I'll enjoy and they can eat their hearts out . I brought in some gluten free mesquite banana bread to share with a couple of people. One of them was one of the people in my first post I mentioned had celiac. This person is doing...
  21. I am a blood test/biopsy comfirmed celiac. I did suspect that gluten might be a problem for 6 months before being asked to be tested but I did not do the diet until my diagnosis. It has made it easier for me to stick to the diet with the diagnosis. But, now that I know I can do this, I feel that if any other sensitivities start to pop up I will probably...
  22. I can understand your frustration because you care. I am pretty convinced my brother needs to be on a gluten free diet also. He was dx with sarcoidosis in 1992 and since has ongoing chronic rashes. He has gi issues, lactose problems, and is obese. I was leaning toward my Mom having it but everything came out ok for her. I do, in hindsight, believe...
  23. It could be the cinnamon flavoring. I used to have trouble with cinnamon life but not the regular before going gluten free. I have not had an issue however with the cinnamon chex.
  24. Still tired of Doctors: WOW! What a lot of good information and a lot to think about. I have been complaining that none of the surgeons/urologists (we are on #5) have ordered any kind of diagnostic imaging tests or blood work for him. I am an x-ray technologist and I have done many x-rays and ct scans for people who have a lot less symptoms. I'm not...
