ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Celiac - Vegetarian
Reba32 replied to happinessreigns's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think a lot of manufactured, processed vegetarian foods will have wheat in them, (veggie burgers and the like) but whole vegetables and fruits have always been naturally gluten free. you can find vegetarian and gluten free protein sources, if you're lacto-ovo, your options are more than if you're vegan of course. this blog here Open Original... -

ARCHIVED Holiday Successes And Failures
Reba32 replied to thleensd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ok, can I have the recipe for the peppermint bark pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez? I've been craving some I had two holiday feasts, one was Solstice feast with the grove, and it's pot-luck so I took homemade (love that!) stew, bread and dessert granola that I could eat, and I knew that everyone else would like. And everyone is getting used to everyone... -
Best way to keep vitamin levels, and energy levels up is to eat whole, natural foods. All day every day. About 5 or 6 times a day. Start with breakfast within 30 minutes of waking. I have eggs pretty much every day, with some added fruit or veggies like peppers, or mushrooms, or zucchini. Some days I have a quick flax muffin, with pumpkin, or zucchini...

how is your diet, other than being gluten free? Do you eat a lot of manufactured and processed foods? Or do you eat whole, natural foods? If you've just replaced gluteny foods with the manufactured gluten free equivalents, this could contribute to weight gain, water retention, and hormonal imbalance. There is *very little* nutrition, if any, in manufactured...

some people just don't care enough about themselves, and don't attribute their headaches, join pain, high cholesterol, weight problems, and brain fog to eating gluten. They figure they don't get gut pain, so they're ok. It's their choice.

if you've only been gluten-free for a month, and if you *are* Celiac, then you may have started to heal, but not by much. It really depends on if you are, and how long you have been, if you follow. When I did the gluten challenge I'd been mostly gluten-free for a year, and the first serving of gluten I ate, had me doubled over in pain. And then I had...

ARCHIVED Wheat Allergy And Grain Alcohol
Reba32 replied to creesal's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
creesal, several vodkas are in fact wheat free, because they're not made from wheat. You have to check the website of the distiller to find out its origins. Some are made from grains, some are made from potatoes. Here's a list of some of the more common vodkas, and what they're distilled from Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED I Think My Dog Has Celiac!
Reba32 replied to pain*in*my*gut's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My dog has been on grain free food since I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I don't even buy cookies or treats that have gluten in them. There are lots of choices available for grain free foods, a little more expensive, but well worth it! -

ARCHIVED Mother Drives Me Nuts Cooking Gluten Laden Foods
Reba32 replied to catlover0329's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was craving stollen earlier this month and so went a-goggling! I haven't tried any of these recipes because I also avoid sugars like the plague so I'm trying to find alternatives to powdered sugar, as well as a lower carb option on the flour (I may try coconut flour). But maybe others don't mind carb counts so much, and you could try some of these recipes... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do For The Pain?
Reba32 replied to TTNOGluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess it would depend on which country you live in as to which off the shelf or over the counter pain relievers are available to you. For me though, an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or naproxin (advil or aleve) works, along with a heating pad on my gut and on my back. In Canada there's also Robax Platinum, which has the anti-flammatory plus a muscle... -
yep, you most certainly will be more noticeably sensitive to gluten now that you're gluten free. After years of your body attacking itself, and inflammation caused by constant in-fighting, your body goes numb to it after a while. Now though it's going to be on the alert more immediately. I tossed out everything in my house that had gluten in it. Make-up...

eeeeeewwwwwwwwww Velveeta and cheez whiz? That's not food! The "Living Gluten Free for Dummies" is a good book as is "The Gluten Connection" (both available online just google 'em) Holiday meals are easy, just stay away from packaged frankenfoods (like the above mentioned eeeeeeewwwwwwwww!) and stick with all natural whole foods that Nature made herself...

with dry eyes and dental problems, it could also be Sjogren's. Have you been tested for any autoimmune diseases besides Grave's? I had Grave's (it's in remission now), I have Celiac, and psoriasis. I have also been tested for several others, all results were "inconclusive" though. -

for those who are dairy sensitive, coconut milk can be subbed in most recipes, including puddings/custards. -
I'll second the suggestion for Paleo dieting, and the Wheat Belly book. A "heart healthy" diet is pretty much the exact opposite of what the current recommendations from the Heart Associations and Diabetes Associations are touting. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link

and a rheumatologist. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause deformation of joints, like you are experiencing in your feet. So can simple bunions. Either one will cause extreme pain in the foot. Muscle weakness and numbness can be caused by any number of other auto-immune diseases, such as lupus, psoriatic arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and on and on...any... -
both Hashimoto's and Celiac are auto-immune diseases. Once a person has one auto-immune, it is possible to develop more, and whether they are traditionally though to be "linked" is anybody's best guess. There are hundreds of them, to list them here would take up a few posts!

I have read in a couple of places that Celiac can make you more suseptible to alcohol because of the damage to your small intestine. That said, I usually have a stronger reaction to alcohol if it has bubbles (beer, cider, mixed with pop) than if it's flat (wine, or straight liquor). I drank almost an entire bottle of red wine last weekend, and hardly had...
-
yeah, I just love it when doctors or health care providers say you can't have Celiac unless you have diarrhea! I have read that statistically, only about 35% of Celiac patients have diarrhea. Another 35% have constipation, and the rest have no such symptoms at all. I only have pain when I get glutened, and then it's excruciating. I can hardly breathe...

ARCHIVED Do All Celiacs Have To Worry About Cross Contamination?
Reba32 replied to eborzecki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I go to restaurants as often as my budget allows (which isn't often, I'm unemployed) but I don't avoid them altogether, I just contact them ahead of time to find out if they have anything I can eat, and if not, I go somewhere else. I have been incredibly lucky and have not been contaminated in a very long time. Last week I went out for sushi for a couple... -

ARCHIVED Can You Have Soy If You Are Gluten Free?
Reba32 replied to quiltmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
everyone has different symptoms, it's hard to say if yours are specifically from gluten intolerance or from something else. Burning sensations in the mouth I think are more common with allergic reactions rather than an auto-immune reaction. When do you notice the burning? All the time, or only with certain foods?
