I'll agree with pondy above and say eat more fats and proteins to stay satiated longer. And eat more frequently all day long, rather than just 3 specified meal times. 5 to 6 times per day will help to regulate blood glucose levels and will even out cravings better.

ARCHIVED What's In Your Gluten Free Travel Gear?
Reba32 replied to birdie22's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
for road trips I fill my cooler with cut up veggies, cheese, and nuts 'n' seeds trail mixes. When I drove from North Carolina back to Canada I ordered a bunch of stuff from netrition . com, like cheese chips, and Dixie Diner snack bars. I loooooooove cheese chips! I'm not sure if the shop here at celiac.com has them or not...? Hard boiled eggs,... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Options In Charleston, Sc And Savannah, Ga
Reba32 replied to OkieGirl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I visited Charleston a couple of years ago and can't for the life of me recall the name of the restaurant where I had a nice hamburger without a bun. There's a Whole Foods market just outside the city, they usually have some gluten-free options there. I grabbed some chicken wings and a salad one night from their ready to go section. Mostly I took... -

ciamarie, most often in North America maltodextrin is made from corn, not wheat. If it is made from wheat the ingredients list has to make note of it. Maltodextrin derived from wheat is most common in Europe, but I believe they still have to declare it on the label. -

give him some info on just how damaging this disease is, and show pictures if necessary of damaged intestines and a malnourished child. And tell him in no uncertain terms that yes, most definitely, even just a small crumb, never mind an entire biscuit and sausage (which also likely contains wheat crumbs) can do some serious long lasting harm to his child... -
ARCHIVED Sad For The Child But Not Much I Can Do
Reba32 replied to elfie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would most definitely find out the doctor's name and report him/her to the local medical board for endangering the child's life! I would also give that doctor's name to the Celiac Association and have them send him/her some up to date information that points out this is an auto-immune disease, and not an allergy that can be "grown out of". And I would... -
ARCHIVED Neuro Signs
Reba32 replied to red island's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
symptoms of cross contamination can last for several days or several weeks. If you've only been gluten free for 2 months, and been cc'd 3 times, it is likely that your ongoing symptoms are result of those cross contamination incidences. Or not. With some of us, neurological symptoms appear several months after going gluten free, with no cc. Like me. ... -
ARCHIVED Dry Mouth A Symptom Of Celiac?
Reba32 replied to Silencio's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
yes, if you have Sjogren's it can negatively affect your teeth and gums. -
ARCHIVED Gluten, Dairy, Soy, Nut Free Pumpkin Something?
Reba32 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use coconut milk from a can to make pumpkin custard when I have a friend over who is dairy and soy intolerant. Coconut milk in the cartons have a lot of additives and added sugar, so I personally wouldn't use those in cooking recipes, unless you're going to also adjust the sugar in the recipe. YMMV. -

ARCHIVED Cost/guilt Of Having Celiac
Reba32 replied to eborzecki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
gluten free packaged foods are expensive. But if you stop thinking about gluten free alternatives to the foods you used to eat, and just go with natural whole foods, you may notice your grocery bill will go down. Someone above suggested to stick with the outside aisles of the grocery store, and I will second (third?) that. Fruits, veggies, and unprocessed... -
ARCHIVED Do All Celiacs Have To Worry About Cross Contamination?
Reba32 replied to eborzecki's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
yes, everyone with Celiac disease should be concerned about cross contamination, regardless of what their reaction is, it is still causing damage to the intestines. -
ARCHIVED Dry Mouth A Symptom Of Celiac?
Reba32 replied to Silencio's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
a GI doctor is unlikely to know what Sjogren's is, let alone know what tests to do for it. It is not a disease that turns up in your gut, it's a rheumatic auto-immune disease. Make an appointment with your GP and/or get a referral to a rheumatologist. -
ARCHIVED Drowning In Need Of Help
Reba32 replied to changed's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
stay away from manufactured and packaged foods, those will be the most common things where you're going to find eggs and gluten. Stick with natural foods, in the outside aisles of the grocery store. Fruits, veggies, unprocessed meats. -
a quick Google for his name shows that he is "Chief Scientific Officer" for some MLM scheme, and his degree in nutrition is in question from a non-accredited university.

ARCHIVED My Parents Don't Understand And Its All My Sister Fault (She Has Celiac Too)
Reba32 replied to eborzecki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You could also point out that just simply for the fact that you already have Celiac disease, your life expectancy is less than a "healthy" person's. And if you (and your sister for that matter) continue to indulge in gluten-y foods, you shorten your life expectancy even further, even without noticeable symptoms. -

ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free. Advice And Serviving Thanksgiving
Reba32 replied to Duncanne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanksgiving is actually pretty easy to be gluten free, just don't put the stuffing inside the turkey, cook it separately, and serve it away from the turkey. Vegetables are all naturally gluten free, unless she buys pre-made pre-seasoned frozen stuff. Ask her ahead of time what she'll be making, tell her you're on an elimination diet because of health reasons... -

if you're so concerned about reducing salt in your diet, it doesn't mean you're reduced to eating only dirt. Not by any means! Just cut out packaged manufactured foods and soft drinks, and eat anything else you want that is gluten free and put salt on it. The human body *needs* salt to survive, but the typical western diet of packaged convenience foods... -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
Reba32 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
for me, the vertigo didn't even present until more than a year after I'd been gluten free. And I have not had any cross contamination in quite some time, I'm extremely careful with what I eat, and I *know* it when I've been cc'd, because within 20 to 30 minutes, I'll be in pain, doubled over and can't breathe. The easiest way to lower your salt intake... -

ARCHIVED Having Immediate Family Tested
Reba32 replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
it would be nice if family history would make it an automatic necessary test for first gen family members, but it isn't, so we have to keep pushing. Both doctors and first gen family members! My sister has classic symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, vitamin deficiency, etc) but she refuses to get tested, and both her children have classic symptoms, (digestion...
