ARCHIVED Red Lobster Gluten Free Items
Skylark replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The ingredients of real Buffalo Wings are gluten-free. The problem is always the shared fryer. Traditionally they are deep fried and then coated in a sauce made from butter and tabasco. It drives me nuts when places bother to list stuff from shared fryers. Don't they understand that it's not even remotely gluten-free or safe??? Don't put a * by it on... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Have Problems With Caramel Coloring?
Skylark replied to Tidings's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Neato! I always wondered what was in Pepsi. Here is the main page for the FDA GRAS lists. Open Original Shared Link At the very bottom of the page are the links to the electronic Code of Federal Regulations which has the full lists. 21 CFR Part 182 is the main list, with more stuff added in part 184. Wheat gluten is on there. I was... -
You want funny? I picked up my gluten sensitivity on Atkin's diet, yet another fad diet. I react strongly enough to wheat that identifying the sensitivity on my elimination diet was easy. (Ow!) I don't react as noticeably to rye and had been eating some rye crackers assuming I had regained my childhood wheat allergy. I dropped everything starchy including...

ARCHIVED Udi's gluten-free Bagels And Severe Nausea?
Skylark replied to missingpasta's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Now I feel left out. I want to be a special snowflake! Xanthan gum is as good a guess as any, and something a non-celiac would react to as well. I love the Glutino bagels. Have you tried them, Michelle? They're a little lighter than regular bagels, but still a very good platform for lox and cream cheese. One of my friends had one and said... -
ARCHIVED Polymyalgia Reumatica
Skylark replied to sherrylynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have no problem finding gluten-free carbs. Corn chips, potatoes, tortillas, rice, gluten-free breads, gluten-free pasta... it's all available. Brown bagging works much better for celiac. A lot of us cook all the time and take leftovers to work. I hope the diet helps you. Fatty stool could just be celiac malabsorption. I don't know about black but... -
ARCHIVED Question To Those Avoiding Dairy
Skylark replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are different kinds of milk reactions, casein, whey, or lactose. Whey allergies are relatively uncommon so she is probably reacting to casein. Sometimes people who can't tolerate cow dairy can eat goat or sheep dairy. Goat's milk is not as mild flavored as cow's milk but it's worth a shot. You can also find goat cheeses like gouda and cheddar... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed Last Week
Skylark replied to cmathews03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry you're feeling this way. It does get better, especially when your symptoms subside. Unfortunately, we do end up with a bit of an uninvited hobby with the gluten-free diet. The diet is a shock at first and you do have to grieve. Do your best not to resent other people for what they can eat. I'm sure you realize thinking that way is only going to... -
ARCHIVED Missing The First Time?
Skylark replied to randomceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You might talk to your doctor about how necessary it is for you to keep eating gluten before the biopsy. You're obviously celiac and I can totally see where you would want to stop eating gluten and being in pain. Here is a study showing 99% specificity for anti-DGP. Open Original Shared Link One suggesting biopsies are not necessary with anti-EMA... -
You could always talk to the manager at that particular store and see whether their policies about the fryers are as strict as when I worked there.

ARCHIVED Polymyalgia Reumatica
Skylark replied to sherrylynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I took Bentyl when I was a child. It's an antispasmodic that's safe and mild. I never got over stomach viruses very well and the Bentyl would help settle things down. You probably won't need it once your intestine heals. It may make you a little drowsy, as it's an anticholinergic. Open Original Shared Link I agree that five meds at once is a little... -
ARCHIVED Could My Symptoms Be Celiac?
Skylark replied to vampire-panda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello. Yes, you could be celiac. You have a lot of symptoms of it. Did your doctor run a celiac panel? Please keep eating gluten until you can get properly tested. The tests do not work on people who are on the gluten-free diet and it's better to know if you're really celiac. If your doctor will not run a celiac panel, you need to find one who will... -
ARCHIVED Missing The First Time?
Skylark replied to randomceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It sounds like you had gluten issues and some malabsorption earlier, but you weren't celiac. Stress can trigger the full-blown autoimmunity. What bloodwork was positive? If you had high anti-EMA or anti-DGP, there are publications saying a biopsy is unnecessary as those two are quite specific for celiac disease. TTG alone, and you should go through... -
ARCHIVED Is Clear Sambuca Romana gluten-free?
Skylark replied to SaraKat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hard liquor is distilled away from the grain mash used to make it, so it has no detectable gluten. The flavorings in Sambuca would also be naturally gluten-free. All distilled spirits and vinegars are considered safe for celiacs. You may run across outdated information that says otherwise, as in the past celiacs were advised to avoid grain alcohols and... -
Yay! Isn't it nice when those other intolerances go away? I was so happy to put milk in my coffee after a year gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Udi's gluten-free Bagels And Severe Nausea?
Skylark replied to missingpasta's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tests for food intolerances are notoriously unreliable. They also do not test for intolerances to food additives, glutamate, amines, oxalates, or salicylates which can cause some people a lot of trouble. Conditions like fructose malabsorption are also off the medical radar so to speak. It can get very confusing and frustrating sifting through reactions... -
Don't you know flour grows on trees, neatly packaged in 5 lb bags?
-
Betcha it was bits of breakfast hash browns, which are cooked at the same station. Little bits break off easily and we always ended up with hash brown crumbs in the fry bags at the changeover from breakfast to lunch. I worked in a McDonald's in high school and not much has changed as far as their fried foods. We would have been reprimanded the first...

ARCHIVED Biopsy Positive - Blood Tests Negative
Skylark replied to Scatabrain's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the kind words about some of the awful GI stuff we've dealt with. I'm glad your symptoms are less severe, although migraines are no fun at all! The specificity of the biopsy depends on the degree of damage. Thing is, it sounds like your doctor is in the process of ruling out other things that can cause an abnormal biopsy like H. pylori. It... -
ARCHIVED New Here... Would Love Some Help Understanding My Bloodwork
Skylark replied to Gingi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The canker sores do suggest you're gluten intolerant. I always am surprised now when I bite the inside of my mouth and it heals normally. Between that and the slightly elevated TTG it's certainly worth asking a GI about an endoscopy/biopsy. Also, celiac is a process. The high normal TTG and wheat gives you may be signs that you are in the process of... -
ARCHIVED Bloating!
Skylark replied to CarolinaKip's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm wondering about oxalate in the spinach. Unfortunately, the other greens that are low fructose also have some oxalate. Try a small serving of cooked cauliflower or broccoli if that hasn't bothered you in the past. -
He's not going to find much on celiac and constipation in the medical literature even if he does study up. There are sooooo many symptoms folks on this board have experienced that are not documented.

ARCHIVED Negative Celiac Panel But Gluten Free Helping
Skylark replied to L-NO's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your GI is not correct according to everything I've read online and in the literature. You need more like two months of full gluten before a biopsy. -
ARCHIVED New Here... Would Love Some Help Understanding My Bloodwork
Skylark replied to Gingi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hard to say what the tests mean when your TTG is moving around the normal range of the test. Reference ranges are set by the labs, and partly defined by the variability of the test. A reference range in arbitrary units is not "low" or "high" as you have no way to compare between labs. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum is total IgA. It means you are not IgA... -
Without total IgA, your results are not interpretable. If you're IgA deficient and feel better off gluten you're probably celiac. If you're normal total IgA, you would need a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. You cannot get an accurate biopsy gluten-free, so keep that in mind if you try the diet. Another thing to remember is that if you haven't been...

ARCHIVED Do You Expect Relatives To Cater To Your Gluten-Free Diet?
Skylark replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm impressed that your SIL even went to the trouble of setting up a separate grill. It sounds like your MIL doesn't want to go out of her way, but she is taking the diagnosis seriously enough to make sure you are sending safe food. I'd call them a touch insensitive as far as not providing dessert for a kid (who really cares about it). We've seen some...
