It's not that your friend doesn't get it. Your friend is a bully. Trust me, for every mean person there are 10 nice ones. Don't waste your time on mean girls. YOU control what goes in your body. You need to be able to stand up for yourself whether someone is pressuring you into eating something unsafe, or drinking or taking drugs. This is a really...

ARCHIVED Did You Have A Trigger That Started Your Symptoms?
srall replied to afreeclimber74's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am pretty sure my pregnancy was my trigger. I was 35 when I had my daughter, and was tired all the time. I blamed the daughter. You would too if you knew her. She is exhausting. But somewhere around age 39 or 40 I became nauseaus (sp?) all the time, every day. That is when I really started exploring what could be wrong. There were so many other things... -

				ARCHIVED Gluten Free...just Because
srall replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Playing devil's advocate here: My house is gluten free because my daughter and I CANNOT eat gluten. So I'd call my husband gluten lite and he is definitely benefiting from it. Much less gas and stomach pain and he's lost a lot of weight. Who knows, maybe he needs to be all the way gluten free, but he is really benefiting from eating less. We have so... -

				ARCHIVED Time To See Improvement?
srall replied to Rock7902's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think I started by taking dairy out of her diet (before gluten) because even though I was gluten/dairy/corn free I just didn't want to put my daughter through all that. I just did a lot of trial and error with elimination diets with my daughter. Once her system was clean, if I gave her milk or corn or gluten she had immediate and clear responses, such... -

				ARCHIVED Time To See Improvement?
srall replied to Rock7902's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yeah, I'd just get her off gluten. It appears she has celiac. My daughter probably was gluten intolerant from 1 year on, but she was diagnosed gluten intolerant (sensitive) at age 7 1/2. So I imagine it's different for a toddler? Some of her symptoms resolved immediately. Some of the behavior problems are still resolving 6 months later. I'm still trying... -

ARCHIVED Healing Timeline: Is This Back And Forth Normal?
srall replied to margotb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with above poster. I found many more food sensitivities, esp. corn. I'm a year in and I still have bad days (like today). Don't know if I ate something or it's just still part of the healing. It is frustrating. I think a month in is pretty new, esp with that diagnosis. -

ARCHIVED Cold Lunches - What To Pack For My Son?
srall replied to SandraD1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
THERMOS. Send leftovers, soups, rice noodle spinach pesto, rice dishes Lunchmeat with sesame rice crackers (as close to a "lunchable" that we can get) Homemade muffins made with teff flour and rice flour PB & J on Udi's cut up fruits and veggies obviously potato chips nuts (if you are allowed to send nuts) lara bars -
I have to say, I realized early on that if I didn't learn to cook I was never going to enjoy food again, given that I really don't let others cook for me unless we're traveling. I think your idea of convenience changes. A neighbor of mine has a son that she is supposed to have on a gluten free diet. (In her defense she has 5 kids). But the thought of...

When I was in Disney World a couple of weeks ago I started drinking my coffee with a little cream. At home I use hemp milk, and I guess I was just too addicted to forego my coffee. Anyhow, after a couple of days of this I became very very nauseated. I had always associated the nausea with gluten and wheat, but since I gave dairy and wheat up at the same...

ARCHIVED "but You Only Have 'borderline' Gluten Intolerance!"
srall replied to Pamela B.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
True that. -
Jack, I am so glad you are feeling better and that your symptoms are clearing up. As a mom, I am so impressed that you are taking the steps on your own to improve and manage your health. (I hope that did not come across condescending...I hope my celiac daughter is as conscientious when she's your age.) I used to have the same attitude as your mom...people...

ARCHIVED Oh Please No! Not Spinach Too? C'mon!
srall replied to srall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
O.M...G. I am not sure I'd survive M&M's and a diet coke at this point. It's been sooooooo long. But it used to be a usual meal for me. I must say Celiac has probably saved my life with the changes I've had to make to my diet. Hope the hives and headache go away quickly. -

ARCHIVED Oh Please No! Not Spinach Too? C'mon!
srall replied to srall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
DomesticActivist: I have to say I have loved your posts over the past couple of weeks. I especially loved the Crazy Diet blogs. They really hit home. Thank you everyone for wonderful responses (as always). I feel like the universe has been steering me toward the SCD for awhile now. I have already tried cutting out sugar and processed even more than... -

ARCHIVED Oh Please No! Not Spinach Too? C'mon!
srall replied to srall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm laughing right now because I'm eating chicken and rice and going through my messages. I did cook up some green beans so hopefully those won't mess with my stomach. Yesterday I looked up a reaction to salicylates and I think that's what I'm reacting to. My reaction is exactly what you listed. Plus everything I had in my smoothie was full of them... -

ARCHIVED Oh Please No! Not Spinach Too? C'mon!
srall replied to srall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I can't believe I'm writing this, but I wish it were salmonella. I think I'm having a problem with raw fruits and veggies. I've been tracking this for awhile. Evangeline, I eat eggs for breakfast every morning. That's good info. I also "need" to eat meat to keep my energy up. I only buy grass fed, free range meat. I have made my peace with meat.... -
So, I've been reading this forum long enough to know that an intolerance to spinach and other raw fruits and veggies are real, but now that it's striking me I'm having a really hard time. I think this is harder than gluten. When I started this whole process I was following a vegan diet and feeling morally superior (Just kidding...but I did feel good about...

ARCHIVED Ah Ha Moment With My Son? Or Grasping At Straws?
srall replied to sodakgal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It may have been gluten exposure, but keep in mind a lot of people get crazy gluten withdrawal symptoms. I didn't notice it too much in my own daughter, but mine were bizarre. He's really only been off a couple of days. And maybe he does have something else going on, and of course you will explore that I'm sure, but I still believe trying a gluten free... -

				ARCHIVED School Bans Homemade Lunches
srall replied to Jestgar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I heard this on the radio this morning. This is absurd. Absurd! First of all the way our lives are right now, given my daughter's age and health concerns, there is no way in HELL I'd let anybody else feed her. The risk is too great. But even if she were in perfect health without food issues, if it was a choice between what I packed her and the school... -

ARCHIVED Ah Ha Moment With My Son? Or Grasping At Straws?
srall replied to sodakgal's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Everyone's replies were so eloquent...I don't have much to add, except when I saw your post I had to log on and say that my daughter had similar issues. Taking her off gluten/corn and dairy has been life changing. I also had an a-ha moment with her. I'd been gluten/dairy/corn free for about 5 months and even though my issues were resolving I was baffled... -

				ARCHIVED Grain Free Meat Necessary?
srall replied to ilikepie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm not on a grain free diet, but my daughter and I have huge problems with corn. I noticed right away that I had difficulties with grain fed, hormone filled meat and eggs. It's very expensive but I only do cage free, hormone free, antibiotic free eggs and meat. I feel better and I'm hoping that keeping these hormones out of my almost 8 year old's diet... -

ARCHIVED Any Celiacs Who Decided To Be Completely Grain-Free?
srall replied to Evangeline's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Do you mean cracks in the finger prints or the nails? My nails have ridges that aren't going away, but I am getting my moons back (in the nail bed) which is supposed to be good. After a year gluten/dairy/corn free I know I my next step is the SCD. I am back to having some fatigue and I have some inflammation that just isn't going away. It's just so... -

				ARCHIVED Anyone Have Tmj Problems?
srall replied to Debbie B in MD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My symptoms went away when I went gluten free a year ago. I packed my $400 night mouth guard away in the closet. It has only come out when I have been glutened. One night before I adjusted my daughter to a gluten free diet I had fallen asleep with her in her bed. Her teeth grinding kept me awake. That was one of my clues (among MANY) that she might also... -

ARCHIVED Wdw Was A Great Experience
srall replied to srall's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No to the cruise, but I would feel comfortable with the food on the ship. With my daughter's sort of blah response to Disney this time, I'm not sure it's in our future. But I think it looks like fun. -
First two weeks were very rough and I had a bunch of other bizarre symptoms such as my sinuses completely closed up, headaches (like you), I went to the restroom so many times a day it was like my body was purging everything it had ingested over 40 years, I was tired...I am sure there were many more. You should feel better soon. It's worth it!
