  1. First of all, welcome! And let me say I think it's really sweet that you're taking this so seriously, your boyfriend is a lucky guy! 1. The deal with kissing is just if you still have traces of what you ate or drank in your mouth or on your lips. My husband usually rinses with a little water and wipes his mouth after eating before he kisses me, so far...
  2. No, not everything has wheat starch in it! There are plenty of European celiacs who don't eat it either. I'd vote for Finland but I'm biased because of my moms cooking. Sweden should be easy, too. And I've been to England and had no problems, yummy cookies at Sainsbury's... Pauliina
  3. Someone posted a lot of good information in this section of the board just a couple of days ago, if you scroll down the page with the list of subjects you should still see it... Pauliina
  4. That could absolutely cause a reaction! (The knife I mean, unless you cleaned it well between). And the toaster is a major source of cross contamination! Toasters aren't that expensive, you should get yourself your own personal gluten free one. There's a learning curve with starting this diet, you'll get there! Pauliina
  5. That's all I have to say... Paulina rolling under the table laughing...
  6. Kate, welcome on the forum! I had to reply because you sound EXACTLY like me when I first went gluten free. First I felt just wonderful for a few days, and then for a long time I was tired tired tired and always hungry. I think what it is, is there's a autoimmune reaction going on, and when you first cut out gluten, your body is just happy that the...
  7. Welcome! From what I've read here, constipation often seems to be the more stubborn one to go away, compared to D. So it might be good to just go on for a bit longer. Also, do read this forum about all the tips about hidden gluten and cross contamination, thing is, the longer you are gluten free, the more sensitive you get to it, and "almost gluten...
  8. A tip for those who react to chicken - I get sick from cheap supermarket chicken, but if I buy what they here call "biological" chicken I'm fine. I don't know what the difference is, maybe whatever they feed the poor birds? Casein gives me similar symptoms as gluten, and I react to legumes (beans, peanuts, peas) and to nightshades (tomatoes, paprika...
  9. I don't push it after a glutening either. I can start to feel really ill if I do... But a week after a glutening I would probably be working out again, I would just see how i feel and not push it. Pauliina
  10. You only really need to think about it logically for a moment to realize that the doctor is wrong. The whole POINT of the gluten free diet is to allow the intestine to heal again... Of course if there's a lot of damage it's possible that there's still damage to be found after a while gluten free, but there's no guarantee that would be the case. Also...
  11. My other big culprit was also dairy... Pauliina
  12. Am I right that you're at the moment still eating gluten waiting for tests? I really hope for you (I know it's strange:)) that it's celiac or gluten intolerance! Because I think gluten free in Africa might not be that hard... Pauliina
  13. At six months I think I was more or less bloated all the time. Yes it was very much up and down and not always because of a glutening. Bloating is still the last thing to go away after I have been glutened, it's the most stubborn of my symptoms. But nowadays I'm not bloated all that often (two years on the diet). Pauliina
  14. I just wanted to give another hint for a creamier type milk substitute I use coconut milk... it comes with more or less fat, the fattier kind I like as a substitute for cream in desserts. Like I cut up some fruit and pour coconut cream on top for an easy dessert. On my avatar, the little bowl is actually red currant soup with some coconut cream on top...
  15. Not that I'm a doctor, but a smooth duodenum sounds really really suspicious. What exactly did the doctor mean by that? Because flattened vili almost certainly means celiac, no further testing necessary, go gluten free ASAP. Only you should check with your doctor to hear what exactly it is they saw. Unless it turns out they indeed saw celiac damage,...
  16. Ok, not meaning to confuse you, and this is just my opinion, I'm not a doctor, etc etc... but I would do a biopsy, just to see what is going on in there, and after that I would try the diet regardless. As far as I know that blood test result that you got is not a very strong indication of celiac disease on it's own... but since you're looking into it, I assume...
  17. Not meaning to make you feel bad but that's the highest malabsorbtion number I've seen on here... Hey at least you know how to turn it around, right? I think the priority would be to avoid gluten religiously so that you start to absorb stuff again, otherwise supplements won't do a lot of good? And eat a nutritionally dense diet, you can't afford...
  18. I've been gluten free two years now and I can tell you it does get better! At one year I still was very much up and down from day to day. Just an idea... a "mood food" that I like is some dark green veg (broccoli, darker green sorts of lettuce) with salmon... that seems to have a combination of vitamins and nutrients that really picks my mood up...
  19. My hubby wipes his mouth, and rinses with a bit of water, and for a bit more "thorough" kissing , we wait and don't do it right after eating. I get symptoms from less tha a crumb. A crumb is actually quite a lot of gluten... Pauliina
  20. On good days I could almost do without the toilet paper, seriously. But of course I do use it!!! If I get glutened, I'm like the first poster, first D then several days of C or almost C. After almost two years of gluten free, the good days far outnumber the bad for me, btw. Pauliina
  21. I guess you could test this by eating some peanuts that you shell yourself. If you react to them, it's pretty sure you're reacting to the peanuts themselves and not to a possible cc with gluten. I don't know if there's any research about other intolerances and possible damage... I avoid eating all legumes, including peanuts, because they give me gas and...
  22. Ok I just read the last posts in the "cold" thread... as far as I can see, in the last posts people were actually apologizing to each other, making up, and at least up to a point agreeing with each other. Sure there was a somewhat heated argument but people did listen to each other and not just resort to name calling but actually argue about facts....
  23. Serves me right for buying the cheapest sweet white wine at my supermarket yesterday. Luckily I only had less then half a glass but I had unmistakable casein symptoms today....the rest of the wine went down the drain btw... I haven't bothered with calling producers about wine, most of the time if indeed I stick to not the cheapest ones it seems to be...
  24. I think there's a good chance the heartburn might get better the longer you're gluten free... Pauliina
  25. What I would do is call the restaurant in advance and talk with the manager. It might be that with a bit of advance warning they might be able to prepare something gluten free, and it's easier to get into the details of the diet and cross contamination issues etc. on the phone during a more quiet time of the day. Then if it sounded like it really would...
