ARCHIVED What Is The Best Pre-made Gluten Free Bread?
jkmunchkin replied to cdiane's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The first couple months I endlessly searched for good gluten free bread. It became normal to drive 45 minutes to some tiny health food store because I heard they had Sterk's which was supposed to be one of the best. Needless to say I'm with ChelsE now. I still like my glutino bagels with cream cheese or peanut butter. Or the breadsticks at Risotteria... -
Take the 1 or 2 Train from Penn Station to Christopher Street. It's a few blocks after you get off the subway. I forget the cross streets, but when you get off the subway walk towards Caliente (this large Mexican restaurant on the corner a few blocks up) walk down the same side of the street that Caliente is on and Risotteria will be block or 2 up. One...

I went to a Greek restaurant once and had a good experience. I just did the usual 20 questions about marinating, what ingredients are used in any of the sides, etc. But I can def' understand why you would be hesitant to go there, especially with that large a group. Personally this may be one I'd bow out on. I'd feel safer if it wasn't with so many people...

Oh yeah Tropica is nice too. Especially in June it has a nice relaxing atmosphere. It's a good lunch place. Restaurant Assoicates actually does the food in our cafeteria at work, and they definately do a good job. Let us know when in June you're coming back. Maybe we could all meet up?!

Well Sambuca isn't the place you go to be seen, but any time I went there they had great food. The atmosphere lends itself to a homey feeling, family style restaurant on the Upper West side. Has pretty, warm decor. It's a place to go eat if you just want good food in a nice setting but not all the drama of an "it" place. I'e never heard anyone, high end or...

ARCHIVED Crumbs Bakeshop Upper Westside Nyc
jkmunchkin replied to pinky's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
OMG if you're lying I will cry like I've never cried before. Crumbs cupcakes were my absolute favorite and one of the last treats I had before becoming gluten free for life. In fact last week someone had them at work and I really kinda got upset about it. Oh please let this be true!!! -
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Risotteria!!! I totally have one of my non-celiac friends addicted also!

ARCHIVED Dried Fruit
jkmunchkin posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This may be an odd or obvious question but does anyone know if dried fruit (ie: banana chips, mango, papaya, etc.) is gluten free? No specific brand... just in general. Not to turn a simple question into a Debbie Downer moment but I went to get a massage last night and in the zen like room that you hang out in your robe & slippers before they come... -
Wow, glad to hear you guys had such a fabulous time!!!! If you come back soon, I called Bloom's today and they are scheduled to open between May 5th and May 10th. Good to know about the Oyster Bar. I commute from Grand Central every day and never would have thought to eat there! Oh an also if you come back, right by the Dakota is a restaurant called...

ARCHIVED Soy Sauce In Individual Packets
jkmunchkin replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was just going to post about Kari-Out. They are actually located down the street from my old apartment (and less than 10 mins. from where I live now), which was great because the owner told me about a chinese restaurant in the area he goes to. -
I think you're best off coming into the city and going to Dr. Green or Dr. Susie Lee at Columbia. I'm sure you can find a good doctor on LI, but you are so close to the city it's silly not to go to the experts.

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Here Have A Pda?
jkmunchkin replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a Palm Tungsten that I bought new off eBay. I had bought it for the purpose of downloading the Clan Thompson Smart List, but I found that after a couple weeks I really didn't need it anymore. But it did help in my initial few weeks of getting acclimated. -
ARCHIVED My Kitchenaid Collection? Almost Complete!
jkmunchkin replied to lorka150's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have the red mixer too!!! When I worked at House & Garden I became obsessed with the Kitchen Aid mixer. Well that and the Dyson vaccum, but the mixer was cheaper to get. LOL!! -
I know this is a thread for actually making the soup yourself but if anyone else is like me and soup is just one of those things I can't seem to bring myself to make, I tried a great one the other day. Grand Central had some sort of Earth Day fair on Friday and they had a whole bunch of vendors one of them being Pacific Foods. They had a sample of their new...

ARCHIVED What Makes You Happiest About Being Gluten-free?
jkmunchkin replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love not feeling sick every single day. I love being able to make plans and actually not cancel because I feel so sick. I love having more energy than I used to. I love knowing that something really was wrong with me all those years and it's not just that I'm they "type of person" that never feels well. I love having the power to make myself... -

Like one of those Kitchen Aid mixers. -
Wow thanks! I'm literally walking out the door to go Outback in like 5 minutes to meet my sister. Just killing some time while I wait for DH. And to think I was actually thinking of trying those.

First off, welcome. How quickly you start to feel better is different for everyone. I started to feel better pretty much immediately. Within the 1st week or so. However there are lots of people that it can take months before they feel better. But the good news is no matter what, you will feel better.

ARCHIVED New To Li
jkmunchkin replied to new to LI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I actually live in Westchester, but DH is from LI and a lot of my friends live there so I am there pretty often. The absolute best restaurant with a gluten-free menu ever is Mama's in Oakdale. I drive like 1 1/2 to go there, that's how good it is!!! They have chicken parm, mozzarella sticks, baked clams... every normal Italian dish you could want and it taste... -
ARCHIVED Johnny Rocket's Is Celiac Friendly
jkmunchkin replied to de caps's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I was so excited to read this until I got to the part about the one on LI not being helpful. That is the only one I know of. Are their milkshakes (pref. chcocolate) gluten-free? -
I got married this past October. When I first got engaged and was planning the wedding I was not yet diagnosed. However once I found out I had celiac I didn't change the plans or menu at all with one small exception. The cake. They made the top layer of the cake a gluten-free cheesecake, so we could still feed each other. But my maitre'd was incredible...

I was actually talking about this with a co-worker the other day (not for me. I don't remember how it came up), and he was saying he has heard of people dying from complications of the surgery a few years later and that it actually decreases your life expectancy by about 7 or 8 years.

What is this graham cracker recipe?!!! -
I don't know if you'll have internet access while you're gone but if you do Avenue Q is the best show ever!! Then again this also depends how old your daughter is. It's not that appropriate for really young kids. Definately go to Risotteria!!!! My favorite thing to do in the city is just walk around and shop. Again, depending on her age, take her...
