ARCHIVED Will An Allergy Specialist Do? Or Do I Need A Ped Gi?
happygirl replied to buttonburger's topic in Doctors
An allergist is generally not the right doctor to see for Celiac. However, the fact that your child is gluten free anyways....a doctor would probably recommend that your child eat gluten for a few months, then do bloodwork and biopsy to 'see' if they have Celiac. Problem is---the treatment is the same if they have a gluten allergy or gluten intolerance... -
ARCHIVED He's Back!
happygirl replied to JerryK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Jerry: The best explanation for the gene stuff that I have found is on wikipedia: Note on DQ Sertoype Names in Relationship with Allele Names DQ sertoypes are usually a recognition of Beta chain isoform groups For example, DQ2 = alleles that start with DQB1*02 (*0201, *0202, and *0203). DQ2 is encoded by alleles that start with DQB1*02 DQ4 is... -
ARCHIVED Mental Confusion And Motor Probs From Glutening?
happygirl replied to angel42's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Angel, What you are describing is rather common among Celiacs who have been glutened. It is frustrating----but, you are definitely not alone. Many of us call it "brain fog"........its the only way to really describe it! I hope it passes quickly. Laura -
ARCHIVED Why Different Reference Ranges?
happygirl replied to chocolatelover's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
chocolate lover: she could still be gluten intolerant, just not Celiac. Same culprit...gluten. -
Alyssa, Welcome to the board! I am happy you have found this site, and you have obviously reached the same conclusion as many of us....this is the place to be for Celiac/gluten information, education, and support. It is overwhelming....but the good thing is that we all truly understand. We were all once in your shoes. None of us were born with...

ARCHIVED Help - Need Info Quick
happygirl replied to Jalar's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Discuss with your GI before the procedure that you want "multiple biopsies, in multiple locations" to check for Celiac damage, even if it doesn't look like damage while he is in there. Tell him regardless of what it looks like, you want the full biopsies taken, because you don't want to have to go through this again. Best of luck. -
ARCHIVED How To Get Picture & Signature To Show Up
happygirl replied to Disney323's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Disney: You have to add your picture as your avatar for it to show up on the side. Go to "my controls," "edit avatar settings", add your avatar and hit the update button. It can take a little while for it to go through, sometimes you have to refresh to make your picture show up on the side. For your signature, "my controls," "edit signature," and... -
Very few doctors will diagnose you with Celiac based on enterolab's results alone. Most will only agree that it is a gluten intolerance of some sort, potentially Celiac. Is there a specific reason why you need an official diagnosis? Many people on the board have doctors who just know that their patients do well on the gluten free diet, and keep it at that...

ARCHIVED Is Celiac Disease Covered Under Americans With Disablity Act
happygirl replied to irish's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It sounds like your problem with the over night issue has to do with your sleep cycle and it being all out of whack (understandably!) and therefore creating problems, not Celiac. You mentioned that you were very sick even while on the gluten free diet....but it was the hours. You are ok when on the gluten-free diet and on a "normal" schedule....so it is... -
ARCHIVED Symtons For Coelic
happygirl replied to kev001's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kev, it probably took me a solid 2-3 months to feel somewhat normal...and I still had another couple months before I really felt "whole." But, the severe bone/muscle pain started lessening within the week, although mildly, I did see an improvement soon after going gluten-free. Keep in mind....you might be "only" gluten intolerant, you might be "only... -

ARCHIVED Interpreting Blood Test Results!
happygirl replied to January Flower's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did you have the full Celiac panel run? Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA Total IgA level What type of symptoms do you have? Was there reason to suspect Celiac? The AGA IgG could be indicative of a gluten intolerance that is not Celiac,... -
ARCHIVED Symtons For Coelic
happygirl replied to kev001's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kev, Bone and muscle pain were my two main problems (it made my horrible GI symptoms seem mild in comparison---wow!) I was seeing a rheumatologist and had every test in the book. Started physical therapy, even. All my tests were negative. Then, I was dx'ed with Celiac, went gluten free, and luckily, my pain started to subside. Once I was truly gluten... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Anyone? Sick And Mystified
happygirl replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lisa, I am sorry you are having a tough time. The main thing that stuck out for me is the Pamela's cookies. I don't know what it is with them....I do well with her other products, and used to do well with her cookies....but I realized that I just cannot tolerate her cookies. I honestly don't know if its gluten or not....but they bother me consistently... -
ARCHIVED What Ingredients To Look For On Labels (new At This!)
happygirl replied to Disney323's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Anything with wheat is required by the Food Allergen Labeling Law of 2006 to be listed clearly. So if you see something with modifed food starch, but doesn't say wheat anywhere---then it is not derived from wheat. Before, they weren't required to list it, so we wouldn't know if the MFS was wheat derived or not. After that, its oats, rye, barley/malt... -

ARCHIVED Pie Crusts At Whole Foods
happygirl replied to LLatham's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for letting us know! I've eaten their personal size pies with the gluten-free crusts (only tried the apple, and LOVE it!) and have enjoyed the crusts...so now I'm going to try this year and make my own pie! Happy that someone else has tried and liked! Laura -
tabasco: I worked in a chain (applebee's) during college and the cross contamination issues there were much like you described! Plus, they didn't have any sort of allergy training. Its pretty scary for a Celiac/allergic person!

ARCHIVED Website Information Correct?
happygirl replied to ce-wyant's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Cara: Welcome to the board! To be honest....lists are as outdated as the day they are printed or posted, because ingredients could change at any time. The only way to know if something is gluten free is to learn to read the labels (which, it sounds like you and your husband are learning quickly!). The good news is that any "wheat" must be labeled... -

ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Vs. Whole Foods
happygirl replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Deb--- I definitely prefer the Whole Foods (I have both in my area)...mainly because of their gluten free bakehouse items, which I love. I like their selection of other gluten-free foods, too. But, I do like TJ's french rolls...I cut them into thirds and use them as sandwich bread. L -
