  1. Confectioner's sugar is generally safe...its a combo of sugar and some version of corn starch/dextrose to keep it from sticking.
  2. that can be one, but you will very rarely see it. Companies are required by law to list all sources of wheat CLEARLY and list it as an allergen (It would say, "Contains: Wheat" at the bottom of the ingredients. Wheat (or anything that says wheat in it), enriched wheat flour, flour, malt (malt, malt flavoring, malt extract, etc), barley, barley malt...
  3. Many Celiacs go by old rules that Natural flavorings weren't safe....but mostly they are. I have never heard that before, so I wouldn't be so sure to rule that ginger ale out I would call the company before you make your decision!
  4. A couple things: IBS itself does not have any signs that would be visible through an endoscopy/colonoscopy, etc. IBDs (mainly, Crohns and UC) have distinctive markers. Crohn's damage is predominantly seen in the colon. Classic celiac damage is seen in the small intestine. "Villous atrophy" or "blunted villi" (the villi are the little hairs in your...
  5. its important to note that there is a difference between sedation and anestethia. Most procedures are done under 'sedation'. There has to be a good reason to use general anesthethia. If so, you will have an MD anesetheiologist in the room. Sedation is shorter term and less risky, which is why it is used. So although most of us call it "anestheia," my...
  6. Aw, Patti, thanks for doing that! I was actually thinking of doing it myself...but it just didn't happen. You are the best!
  7. Linda, yes, you are correct, all ingredients like that must be listed. The only 'potential' (very small) problem would be if it was in a flavoring (i.e., flavoring derived from malt, etc), but *most* companies now list things like that. But if it is just plain malt, then yes, it must be listed.
  8. Many mayos are gluten free, but the only way to know is to learn what ingredients are/aren't safe and then make your decision that way. If you need help figuring out specific ingredients, post it and we'll help. Also, make sure that all condiments are "safe"...they cannot be used by people who are making food with gluten. If you are making a not-safe...
  9. Judy, apparently your doc and some of my docs must be buddies...suggesting the gluten challenge! we KNOW gluten is a problem....I don't care what you want to call it....celiac, gluten intolerance, gluten allergy...
  10. I think that you'll find that there are many parents on this board of children who live relatively normal lives and are surrounded by gluten....they just learn to do things differently.
  11. If you want the biopsy, keep eating gluten and get it. If you don't want the biopsy, then go gluten free. Your decision, not the doctors!
  12. The best way to know is to read the ingredients. If you have ingredients in front of you, feel free to post and we can help you. Otherwise, it is many of the same ingredients to look for in other suspected foods, and if you have questions, you can call the company. It is often hard to say if something is/isn't gluten free, as ingredients can change...so...
  13. Have you called yet?
  14. Who said that that ginger ale was not gluten free? I had not heard that before. What is the ingredient? Please clarify. Thanks.
  15. You could have Celiac (not all Celiacs have diarrhea!) AND a gluten allergy. Or non-Celiac gluten intolerance (which wouldn't show up on the bloodwork) and an allergy. Or any combination thereof. Same treatment though----Gluten free
  16. Donna, I just have to add that your picture is so cute!
  17. Amanda, I'm sure others will add more insightful things , but I just had to quickly post a few thoughts: Your children might be non-Celiac gluten intolerant, so they would never test positive for Celiac. The bloodtests and endoscopies do not test for non Celiac gluten intolerance. So if you kids do better off gluten, then keep them gluten free...
  18. Stef, To me, it really isn't that invasive: its going through a natural opening. Its done under sedation, so chances are, you will wake up and go "When is it going to start!" Its a relatively quick procedure-about 10 minutes long or so. I've had four endoscopies...and I am the world's biggest baby They are honestly not bad at all. I had one done...
  19. relepvd, Welcome to the board! We are happy to have you here! It can be frustrating...and you might get a different answer if you ask tomorrow, or talk to someone different. Some companies are better than others to talk to. The other things is---and I bet this is a big part----many companies have started saying that about perfectly safe things, as a "CYA...
  20. Most whole foods has a section of their own (store brand, made in a gluten-free facility) gluten-free products...in the back, near the bakery. They are fresh. I take them home and freeze them. I also cut them in half and freeze them...sometimes I don't need the full one. I make all kinds of things with it...including lot of appetizers. mmm now i'm hungry
  21. Hey girl, Nice to see you have your results back Agree with what you and others have said. Laura
  22. FeedIndy, Its ok We all worry about every single little thing, too. As with most other sicknesses, the main thing to be careful of is ingredients in meds. But if your little one is adhering to a strict gluten-free diet and has no known complications, they *should* be just normal little ones! I have other health issues now, but before that, when...
  23. It originally aired sometime in the past year...maybe last spring? It is great!
  24. loomis, I don't have children but wanted to welcome you to the board! We hope you will find a lot of good information here. You could have your child tested for Celiac Disease (celiac-without the 's') by bloodwork, but young children who have it don't necesarrily always test positive for it. But it might be worth a shot. Make sure you have the FULL...
