  1. Seasoned breadcrumbs. Croutons. Crackers. Not really baked goods, but those are at the top of my wish list. Nancy
  2. I use Pamela's Baking and Pancake mix. It's easy and my whole family likes it. Nancy
  3. Clear goo. Like snot. That's why it hides in so many things. It just blends in to it's surroundings. Nancy
  4. Congratulations Stef!!! I wasn't sick with either of my pregnancies either. All of the women on my mom's side of the family were sick 24/7 the whole nine months. My dad said it was like my mom had the stomach flu for nine months. My aunt and my cousins were the same way. When my husband and I got married he already knew that when I got pregnant...
  5. Bakeries and smells don't bother me at all. I explained it to a friend of mine that to me it's kind of like smelling scented candles or perfume. Candles and perfume smell great, but I don't want to eat them. I guess in my mind I've converted the smell of bakery stuff into the same category as perfume. If I drank a bottle of perfume just because it smelled...
  6. I was talking to my 11yo nephew the other day and found out that he wants to be a robotics engineer. I told him his first job is to design a laundry-bot for me. Mainly for hanging/folding/storing and putting away the laundry. I've also got a gluten-detection ray on order, kind of like the tri-corders from Star Trek. Just point the gluten-detector...
  7. Oh Ursula... She's beautiful. You must be so proud! Congratulations to all!! Nancy
  8. Yea, especially fields of wheat, swaying in the breeze. >>shudder<< It's like I think those pointy little wheat shards are going to jump through the TV and get me or something. To be honest, just thinking about it makes me kind of gaggy. Nancy
  9. Here's a link to the recipe I use. It's modified from the Top Secret Recipe site, using Pamela's Baking and Pancake mix as the flour substitute. Open Original Shared Link Nancy
  10. I've become more sensitive to smells too. I've also found that my taste preferences have changed since going gluten-free too. A lot of the time things taste way too sweet even though I cut the sugar back in the recipe, or an herb that I used to love I can't even stand the smell of anymore. Nancy
  11. There's a message board/online magazine that I've been a part of for a few years now. The "Scott" of the board has asked me to write an article for the magazine about celiac and my experience with it. This was the message board I was posting at when I was so sick, could barely walk, freaking out and thinking that this was how my life was going to be....
  12. I agree about the naturopathic doctor to a point. I have a naturopathic doctor who is just wonderful who I admire and trust. I've seriously considered becoming an alternative medicine practitioner of some sort someday. But at age 84, my concern would be that she's not getting the diagnostic workup that she needs. It could be a food intolerance and...
  13. I haven't tried to convert Lefse yet. My mom didn't make it very often when I was growing up because she said it took too long to make it right. But I remember begging her to make them. Nancy
  14. She posted again today, and it turns out that it's the SIL who refuses to go to the doctor (which she didn't mention before). Her SIL will only go to a naturopath-type doctor. So it's a whole different situation. If I had known that it was the SIL not wanting to go, and not the person posting the question not wanting to take her, I would have answered...
  15. An update, from the sister - "Please understand my sister-in-law DOESN'T suffer from the symptoms she complains of. The only time she was sniffly was when she caught a cold. I would guess she brings up her meals (which is only occasionally, not all the time) because her years of self-starvation have made a decent meal difficult to keep down. I just want...
  16. I sent them a note thanking them for doing this. Even their description of celiac was great. They even pointed out in the FAQs that it's an autoimmune response and not an allergy. Land O Lakes has always been my favorite butter, but now I'm going to buy that instead of anything else. Nancy
  17. I've been going to Yahoo Answers for a while now, answering questions that come up about celiac and related issues. Today I saw something that scared me to death (emphasis mine): "My SIS imagines her nose runs when she eats gluten or dairy food, and it keeps her awake.? I have watched her closely, especially when she has given in and eaten something...
  18. YES!!! Definitely try the diet. All my tests were negative too. I had 18 years of IBS type symptoms, 2-3 years of mobility issues to the point where I was sure I was going to end up in a wheelchair within five years, and a whole bunch of other symptoms that ended up being gluten-related for me (insomnia, headaches, anxiety). When I went gluten...
  19. That's how it happened with me too. Went from eating tons of gluten to not even being able to use my old wooden spoons. Very odd. But very common here. Nancy
  20. Lisa - I'm sorry you're having such an awful day. I'm praying that your final goes well. Lord knows you've worked so hard to stay in college during all of this. Nancy
  21. I'd print some stuff out for her - the National Institutes of Health has a good page on it. - Open Original Shared Link It's also a good set of information for her to bring to the doctor. I'm sure there are other pages geared more toward children, but I don't know them offhand. I'd definitely mention it again. I might even say to your aquaintance...
  22. Soy SAUCE isn't gluten free, with a few exceptions. Most soy sauce is made with wheat and soy. Luckily one of the mainstream brands (La Choy) is gluten-free. Other than that, I think it's only one or two others that are gluten-free. My favorite is San-J Wheat-Free Tamari. I think it tastes a lot like Kikkoman. Nancy
  23. I do exactly what you do. I eat before I go, then if there is something I feel safe eating, I do. The problem even with olives and cheese is that even though they're generally safe, there's always a chance that people are getting their gluten-y fingers all over them. Sometimes I feel safe with the setup, sometimes not. If it's a catered party, I...
  24. I consistently react within 15-30 minutes. 85% of the time it's within 15 minutes. Everyone is different though. Nancy
