  1. Do you ever shop on iherb.com? It is a wonderful source for toiletries and packaged gluten free food, and they ship worldwide with remarkably cheap shipping rates. You could purchase most items from there. I live in Asia and am not able to eat out, and I do just fine buying my fresh veggies local and buying my bouillon/spices/canned things on iherb. The...
  2. And have you had any problems with it?
  3. It definitely takes time, and it is worth being absolutely rigid about the diet in the beginning to make sure you are doing everything right. I'm now almost three months in to 100% gluten free, and it's only in the past couple of weeks that I've started feeling consistently okay. It takes time, but you'll get there. About your fever, have you been to...
  4. When I get to feeling like that, the best thing for me to do, even though it sounds silly, is wait for everyone to leave the house, turn on my favorite dance music, and just dance like crazy for ten or fifteen minutes. It really shakes the dust off and puts me in a more clear state of mind.
  5. Me too. When I was younger, I could drink just fine, but around the mid-point of college (which is, incidentally, when I really started to get sick,) I found that drinking just one beer would give me a horrible hangover, and often times drinking more than one glass of wine would make me throw up. These days, I prefer to have a half a glass of wine every now...
  6. My boyfriend is SO wonderful in dealing with celiac. He refuses to have any foods in our house that contain gluten, for fear that it will cross contaminate something. He is extremely careful with brushing his teeth every time we come home after we've been out so he can kiss me. And he is already planning out how we will deal when we go home for a visit. He...
  7. Thanks everyone for responding. I just wasn't too sure about the difference between lactose intolerance and casein intolerance. I know that many celiacs can heal over time, and their bodies can eventually digest lactase, but I wasn't sure if casein is the same, or if, because it's a different kind of protein, once your body says "um, no thanks," it's going...
  8. I'm slightly lactose intolerant, but not so bad that I wanted to cut dairy from my diet. However, I developed a rash and some other odd symptoms that lead me to suspect casein intolerance. I definitely feel better without it in my diet, but I'm hoping that someday I'll be able to eat cheese and fermented milk products again. Have any of you gone casein free...
  9. I struggled with TMJ pain for years. It's really awful. Mine was caused by something called a "premature swallowing pattern," which is what happens when a young person, for whatever reason, does not develop a normal adult swallowing pattern, but still pushes the tongue forward when swallowing, the way that an infant does. It can wreak havoc on your jaws....
  10. Very complicated. I disagree that it can't be done, but it is difficult. I've been a vegetarian for five years now, but I'm probably going to start adding a little meat into my diet once I move back to the U.S. and can know with certainty where my meat comes from. I'd honestly rather not, but since going gluten free/egg free/dairy free, well, I've been...
  11. Ooh thanks guys, I will let you know how it turns out!
  12. Anybody have a recipe? Obviously I know it's never going to be like the "real" thing, but I can settle for a delicious substitute.
  13. YES! I may or may not have made several rather expensive trips to the French bakery, where I, maybe, perhaps, possibly, may have eaten more chocolate croissants and pastries than anyone should be permitted to eat in one go. It hurt, it made me feel terrible, but man, it was a delicious farewell.
  14. hi KnightRobby. Regarding the TMJ, what exactly have the doctors told you? I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I used to always say that I would not wish TMJ pain on my worst enemy. It's really awful. Is the problem with the alignment of your jaws? Is it stress related? I struggled with mine for four years before my doctor diagnosed me with something...
  15. I don't blame you! I'd be super peeved if someone did that to my blender!
  16. Eggs can definitely give gluten-like symptoms. They make me drowsy and give me tremendously painful headaches, both also gluten symptoms for me. Some people seem to be able to tolerate real farm fresh eggs, as in eggs from your neighbor, but can't handle commercial eggs. I look forward to having my own chickens someday. I hope I'll be able to tolerate those...
  17. I have to second Gemini. If you put lotion on your hands and then just rub it all over your face getting it on your lips, that could gluten you. The same thing happened to me. I'd wake up feeling great, get ready for work, and by the time I got there I'd start feeling the gluten sleepies and get a headache. After a couple weeks, I realized the problem and...
  18. Colleen, thank you for your clarification. I'm a sensitive one.
  19. Okay, okay, Irish, I'll resolve to chill on my paranoia.
  20. Ah, in that case I must have misunderstood. Fair enough.
  21. And on top of that, when a person spends 8 hours a day in an environment with 60 children who eat bread and snacks in the morning, at lunch, and after school, and then proceed to touch EVERYTHING, I don't think it's crazy to suggest that yes, gluten lingering on surfaces is a problem.
  22. C'mon guys, I really wasn't asking asking for sarcasm. You people, of all people, should understand that being perpetually sick can make you really re-think your steps, trying to figure out where the problem is hiding. I like a good joke, but I think gluten-free Lover's sarcastic comment was unkind. This stuff is new to me. I'm just trying to figure it out...
  23. Haha maybe we should invent a line of stylish latex gloves for celiacs. I'd buy some! Lol.
  24. It's kind of a catch 22 isn't it? On the one hand, you are free to eat lots of yummy things that you've been missing, but on the other hand, those things are making you sick. But you have to eat them for the challenge. I know that during my challenge I had a LOT of fun the first week, but then I got really sick and felt not so great the rest of the time...
  25. Agreed. Lately, I have found myself drawn more and more to the paleo diet, and it really does seem to be helping. It naturally eliminates a lot of the foods that people have intolerances/allergies to, and I have found that it just makes my life so much more simple. So you could try paleo! That will cut the gluten (of course!), corn, etc. Are you dairy...
