ARCHIVED Deciding To Make House gluten-free
Nancym replied to skipper30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It seems like they're so young there's no need to have any big dramatic announcement over it. Just implement it, they'll probably never know. I think they pick up a lot of emotional clues from the adults around them, if you make it sound life-shattering, it will be! -
ARCHIVED My Niece Got A Dui Last Night......
Nancym replied to DingoGirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I doubt there's going to be a problem. Just look at how many lawyers get into trouble. But they usually become Senators or Congressmen first... Good luck, I'm sure it'll work out. -
ARCHIVED Am I Being Unreasonable, Or Is He?
Nancym replied to emcmaster's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Why not let the cat have access to the house minus your room? That's what I do with mine, he can roam around the house at will, but not into my bedroom. I'm a light sleeper and he gets restless. It just doesn't work for me to have him in the room at night. BTW: If you have a problem with your cat meowing outside the bedroom door... you can use the... -
ARCHIVED Dangerous Grains.....
Nancym replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There's quite a lot here on mental manifestations and gluten intolerance: Open Original Shared Link Any search on pubmed ought to have a lot of stuff. Almost all the research is done on people with proven biopsies. But there is one doctor, Hadjivassiliou -- he has published a ton -- (no, I didn't just randomly press down a bunch of keys, it IS his... -
ARCHIVED To Be Gluten Free Or Not?
Nancym replied to Sal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, the guy who wrote the paleo diet thinks grains are evil for a variety of reasons. His newsletter probably describes why: Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED The Emotional Side Of This
Nancym replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I keep reading how vitamin D is connected to mood and heart function and even cancer prevention. It could be that since you've been cooped up being sick, your vit. D stores are low. People in the US tend to get pretty low, especially in the winter. You can take a supplement but you have to take one that has ... I'll butcher the spelling... cholecalcitrol... -

No! I love fruit cake too. In fact, I haven't ever had fruitcake I didn't like. I miss it! (But my thighs don't...)

We should be the Bhudda-belly club. My belly is swollen from too much food at the moment. -

Wheat is very powerfully addictive. Although I found it was easier to give up than cigarettes, it still had some withdrawl things going along with it. Just the thought of giving it up made me kind of sad for a little while. Hey, what've you got to lose from trying the diet, other than dealing with withdrawls for a couple of days? I mean, you might have... -
ARCHIVED Do You Ever Get Nerve Pain Like This? And Why Am I Getting This Now?
Nancym replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Do you know what the level of your B12 was? It can be low normal and cause issues. Lots of times doctors would treat for deficiency at the low end of the range. Technically in-range, but low enough that some patients have issues. It is a vitamin you don't store so unless you go crazy with it, you really can't over dose on it. -

ARCHIVED How Do You Cope With Asperger's People At Christmas?
Nancym replied to georgie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I figure if I'm cooking the meal, you get what I make. No one complains because... well shucks... I'm a pretty good cook. We used to do the dishes that were traditional to my family but we've stopped doing that. It was WAY too much cooking and we couldn't even begin to eat all that food. Just being organized, planning ahead, makes it 100% possible to... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Cope With Asperger's People At Christmas?
Nancym replied to georgie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There are some great places to have xmas dinner out. We used to go to a wonderful buffet at a historic hotel. Are your brothers married? The other possibilities is that in our area you can basically order a meal completely prepared from the supermarket or some place like that. Yeah, hard to do with gluten free though. I made a pork roast. Basically... -
ARCHIVED My Enterolab Results Are In....
Nancym replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well it is, of course, your body and you're the one who gets to make the choice. But I think you owe it to your future self to at least give the diet a good trial. Get your tests done first and eat plenty of gluten before hand (3-4 slices of bread a day) for a few months. -
ARCHIVED Still Trying To Figure Things Out
Nancym replied to Nic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Bingo! That was what I was thinking too. Oh, another thought came to me, its very rare but I was thinking an adrenal issue. You can gain incredible amounts of weight on eating basically nothing if your adrenal gland is pumping out too much juice. Cushing's Syndrome. I just read somewhere that endocrine disorders in children that cause obesity... -
How about looking into E-diets? I think they might have a gluten-free diet plan. I've had excellent luck using an online support forum for support on my diet. I've lost 35 pounds and kept it off for 4 years using a diet similar to the Paleo diet. But you really have to realize that diets are forever. I used to think I could diet it off then go back to...

ARCHIVED Do You Ever Get Nerve Pain Like This? And Why Am I Getting This Now?
Nancym replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went through a period of weird nerve things happening. I've been taking a vitamin B complex and additional B12 because neuropathy can be caused by low B vitamins. Anyway, it has gotten MUCH better. -
ARCHIVED Hello To All/new Guy Questions
Nancym replied to nephlim's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had those "attacks" too. I'd end up on the toilet almost sobbing with the cramping spasms. Oy, it hurt! I basically had them disappear 2 days into the gluten-free diet. I never looked back. I'd suffered with it for years and years. Looking back I can see now a variety of things that I missed, the autoimmune diseases, the bad gas after eating cookies... -
ARCHIVED Sensitivity To Gluten Is Just As Serious As Celiac Disease
Nancym replied to Ricado's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's not a lot of recognition about this in medicine yet, but I believe it is important to take it seriously. A lot of my opinion was formed by what I've read in The Gluten File, at thefooddoc.com (good GI doctor's blog) and the articles written for celiac.com and Dr. Fine's writings: Open Original Shared Link. There's even a Open Original Shared Link... -
I switched from trying probiotics to using kefir instead. It really seems much easier on the gut.

ARCHIVED How Do You Cope With Asperger's People At Christmas?
Nancym replied to georgie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't have asperger's but I find I have a lot better time if I do as much cooking and assembling the day before as is humanly possible. Then I just rewarm on the day of, slam dessert into the oven to cook during dinner. Today's dinner was delicious and no one but me knew it was made the prior day. It is SO much less stress. Sounds like you might need... -
ARCHIVED 5htp And Other Natural Antidepressants
Nancym replied to rutland's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Caffeine can be a good anti-depressant but if you have too much it can create anxiety. But yeah it sounds like you did a good thing getting off the 5htp and SAMe. On the pharma meds they'd wean you off, not stop abruptly though. I know that there are at least 2 types of chemical issues that cause depression so it might just be possible you're on the... -
ARCHIVED Maybe Eating Boxed Cereal Isn't What We Should Choose.
Nancym replied to bluejeangirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think it is good people are doing that. I was looking at some possible Rice Dream ice cream and tried to read the ingredient list. It was about 4" long, teeny, teeny type... I just gave up and put it back! If they need to have that many ingredients, it can't be good for me. -
ARCHIVED Maybe Eating Boxed Cereal Isn't What We Should Choose.
Nancym replied to bluejeangirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
So regardless of the reason, some of us feel cereal for breakfast not the best idea. Lets share what people eat and what makes them feel best. When I eat breakfast it is usually fairly high protein, it sticks with me for hours and hours. I was at a loss when I gave up cheese (dairy) because to me, cheese made eggs palatable. But I found a couple of...
