ARCHIVED Milk Substitute In Recipes?
jerseyangel replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just ordered some this past week. Hasn't arrived yet, I'm looking forward to trying it. I called Vance's directly and was able to order 1 carton to try. I hope to be able to use it for pudding, hot chocolate, etc. I'm allergic to almonds and lately even rice milk has not agreed with me. No soy, either! When I saw it was potato based, I jumped on it -
I have a cat (as you can see!) and he eats food with wheat in it. He's 14, and I really don't want to change his food. I just be sure to wash my hands after feeding him. I use Scoop Away cat litter, and called the Clorox Pet Co. to see if the product had any wheat in it. I was told there was no wheat in it--just clay, and 2 other things--I can't remember...

ARCHIVED Hi Everyone, I Got Better, 20 Pages Of New Posts To Read
jerseyangel replied to Matilda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Matilda--nice to hear from you again! I have to agree that the more simple, whole diet is what works for me, too. If I veer off every now and again, sometimes it's fine--other times, my system complains. I hit the 9 month mark next month--wish me luck -
ARCHIVED Hair Dye Products
jerseyangel replied to Judyin Philly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Judy--I just got back from the salon an hour ago! I went in for a cut and blow dry. I had washed my hair in the shower this morning--asked the stylist to only rinse my hair with water and not use any products at all in my hair. I do this every time and it's not a problem. As far as the color , I use Feria by Loreal. I do it myself at home. I called... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Questions - How Bad Is It?
jerseyangel replied to roses8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Rose--the endo. is nothing to worry about. I don't remember anything from shortly after they put the IV in, till the time I woke up. I had a colonoscopy done at the same time, and even given the extra time that took, I felt fine after. I rested a bit, had a little apple juice, and then was ready to get dressed and leave. I did not get a sore throat... -
ARCHIVED Testing/ Son Is Going In For Biopsy & Blood Testing
jerseyangel replied to skurtz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
An EGD is an endoscopy with a biopsy. So that test would be for Celiac. -
ARCHIVED Need Some Help
jerseyangel replied to momandgirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi--I agree with Rachel. If I were my child, (I have 2 sons) in this situation I would start the gluten-free diet now. Make sure she's 100% gluten-free, and give it some time. I would be willing to bet that she will be feeling much better before long. It's easy for a nurse to say--wait and keep testing--when it's not her child. The diet challenge is... -

ARCHIVED Why Are People So Mean?
jerseyangel replied to Lollie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lollie--I identify with you on quite a few levels. Everyone has given you such good advice and support. I just want to add that I understand how hurtful it is when the people closest to you don't seem to want to understand. I have a wonderfully supportive husband, but not everyone in my life gets it--or even makes an effort. Take comfort in the people... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar?
jerseyangel replied to julie5914's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Julie--Rice Dream contains gluten. I believe it's from barley used in the production. I know most, but not all vinegars are ok, gluten wise. Malt and apple cider FLAVORED being the exceptions. I use apple cider vinegar with no problems. Could it be the acid you react to? -

ARCHIVED Fritos....i Read They Were gluten-free
jerseyangel replied to wolfie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yum --to make rice pudding using the arborio rice, do you cook it as you would for risotto (adding liquid a cup at a time while stirring) but substitute water for the broth? -
ARCHIVED Short Tempered To The Extreme
jerseyangel replied to Timber4est's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get very short tempered (another word actually comes to mind) when I get a gluten reaction. Along with the anxiety, it almost makes me feel manic! I'm sure your mood swings will even out once you've been on the diet a while. -
ARCHIVED Omg- I Got A Diagnosis!
jerseyangel replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know--it seems like too many drs. still have 'the skinny kid with the big stomach' view of Celiac--and if you don't fit the profile, they won't go any farther with it. I was (and am) always about 20 lbs. over what I should weigh. Only in the months before my Dx, did I lose any weight due to the Celiac. By then, I was very ill and everything I ate went... -
ARCHIVED Have Contacted Lots Of Companies For Lists
jerseyangel replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lynne--a big thank you from me, too . I call or e-mail companies quite frequently. I know how time consuming that can be, and add to that, the time it takes you to post the info. The more they hear from us, the better. -
ARCHIVED Gen Jackson Dinner Cruise - Nashville, Tn
jerseyangel replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Vincent--So happy to hear of your great evening! I just love Nashville. When we lived in GA, we would visit there at least once a year. We spent Christmas at the Opryland Hotel a few times, also. Such a beautiful place--I want to get back there again, but it's harder living in NJ. -
I love it

ARCHIVED New Here And Having A Melt Down At The Moment. Sorry This Is So Long...
jerseyangel replied to Virginiann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with everything Nini and Pater said. In my case, I had been sick for 20 years--my symptoms became severe in the 2 years proir to diagnosis. The D subsided within a week or two, initally. But for the first 3 months or so, I still had more bad days than good. Around the 4th. month, I began to feel like I'd turned a corner. Even now, at 8 months... -
ARCHIVED Whats Wrong With Me?
jerseyangel replied to num1habsfan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lisa--Good to hear you are going back to the doctor. Been wondering how you were doing. The weight loss is not good. There's definately something else going on--very possibly stemming from your kidney infection. I believe you said you were on antibiotics for 5 days. That may not have been enough time, and the infection may have come back. Let the doc... -
ARCHIVED Enjoy Life Foods
jerseyangel replied to CMCM's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love the Snickerdoodles and the Gingerbread Spice Cookies. Not crazy about the Chocolate Cookies. -
I believe what I have is an intolerance to soy.. It gives me terrible gas and cramping. It's not uncommon to be sensitive to soy.

ARCHIVED Are We Never Going To Be 'normal' Again?
jerseyangel replied to danikali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Monica--yes, I have become sensitive to several things since going gluten-free. Soy, eggs, tapioca, dairy, coconut, legumes, almonds, rice (any more than once a week or so) and corn. I tend to eat the same things over and over because I know they won't make me sick.. I am afraid that I will become sensitive to some of the things I eat daily because I know... -
ARCHIVED Are We Never Going To Be 'normal' Again?
jerseyangel replied to danikali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know I'll never completely be the same person I was before. Not to be too dramatic, here, but this thing is kind of a NEW reality for me. There are positives and negatives that come with it. The negatives are the obvious ones --the pain in the ass stuff that we all have to deal with now on a daily basis. Comply--or get sick, it never stops. But on...
