ARCHIVED Glutened At Christmas Party
jerseyangel replied to Kenster61's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I bring my own food and if applicable, bring something that I can share, also. I make sure I eat something before I go out. I think Jnkmnky is right on the money on this one--its up to each of us to do what we need to do to eat safely. No matter how well meaning someone is, there are so many things to consider when cooking for a Celiac (as time goes on... -
ARCHIVED Mono And Diglycerides? Modified Food Starch?
jerseyangel replied to smjohn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Merika--This is the entire entry concerning Mono-and diglycerides from the CSA guide--"Manufactured by the reaction of glycerin with fatty acids or the reaction of glycerin with triglycerides in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. Potential for gluten containing sources". Are you as confused as I am? -
ARCHIVED He Got Gluten...
jerseyangel replied to cherie012's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Cherie--Of course it counts for something. I think its wonderful that you're trying to keep your child off the meds. when you feel that the dietary change is what will help him. I think you're doing the right thing. (I have 2 sons of my own) It does feel overwhelming at first--I promise that it does get a lot easier. I agree with the point you made about... -
ARCHIVED Canker Soars?
jerseyangel replied to jessika393's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I get them too now when glutened. I had them frequently before going gluten-free. I never took anything for them--just let them run their course. I also get them when I drink a lot of Grape Juice. -
ARCHIVED Mono And Diglycerides? Modified Food Starch?
jerseyangel replied to smjohn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In the case of modified food starch, if you are dealing with a co. like Kraft (and others) that will list any gluten, the origin of the starch will appear right after modified food starch if it is wheat. If not, it is fine. The CSA Gluten Free Product Listing (2005) lists Mono-and diglycerides as "potential for gluten containing sources". Any time I'm... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Doesn't "get It" How Do I Help Him Understand?
jerseyangel replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This morning I called The Clorox Pet Products Co. -- makers of Fresh Step Cat Litter (the kind I use). I spoke to Rose who told me there is no wheat in this product at all. It contains Georgia Clay, fragrance, and borates (odor control). Hopes this helps--it put my mind at ease, as I'm the one who always cleans the litter box! -
Sorry that you have felt unwell for so long. It is so frusterating when we are trying so hard and being so careful and still something gets past us. You are so not alone. We all go through that. It really just takes some time to figure out what is safe. Yes--that one thing could be the thing that has made you sick this whole time, providing there was...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Turkey
jerseyangel replied to irish's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
For Thanksgiving I got a fresh Butterball. It was delicious and that's what I'll be getting from now on. In addition to having nothing at all added to it, I liked the convenience of not having to thaw it--we picked it up the day before and it was ready to go. BTW--frozen, unstuffed Butterballs are gluten free. I verified that by phone. Of course any... -
ARCHIVED Oh Yes! Hamburgers, Hamburgers!
jerseyangel replied to armoorefam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glad to see this thread again so I can report that I did get the Grandma Ferndons Hamburger Buns, biscuit mix, cinnamon rolls and the McCain fries, too. The buns were fabulous! The cinnamon rolls were good, but you need to add your own frosting. Without it, they're a little bland. Shipping was 19.99--but the buns were worth it--I couldn't take another... -
ARCHIVED Beware Of....
jerseyangel replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wow Kaiti--thanks for the heads up! How do they get away with putting gluten free on the label and using oats? Can't wait to hear what they have to say. Feel better -
Hi Rachel--I'm just reading your posts now. That Dr. sounds fantastic! I wish I could find one like that here. I'm so excited for you--please keep us posted on everything. I don't know anything about the infection angle, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit to learn that there was more to it than gluten. I mean if a microscopic amount can trigger a reaction...

ARCHIVED How Did You Acquire Celiac?
jerseyangel replied to tasha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think for me it was the C-Section I had in 1984. It was after that that the anemia, and nausea began. If I knew then what I know now....... -

ARCHIVED Product Update
jerseyangel replied to eeyor-fan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I posted this before, but couldn't find it by doing a search--its an e-mail I received as a result of a phone call to Bare Escentuals: Dated Tue. 29 Nov 2005 Dear Patti, Thank you for contacting Bare Escentuals. All Bare Minerals are gluten free. This includes bareMinerals foundation, all over face colors, blushes, eye shadows, glimmers... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Handle People Who Refuse To Recognize This Celiac Stuff?
jerseyangel replied to frustratedneicey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sometimes no matter how many times you explain the situation to someone, it does no good. My mom, for example, takes a "stick your head in the sand" approach to my situation. I have talked, sent her printouts of articles and explained some more. She and my dad both don't get the whole thing--they think "staying away fron wheat" is all there is to it. ... -
That was unbelievibly rude of them to treat you that way. Sometimes when people don't understand something or are uncomfortable with a situation, they make jokes. Your boss really set the tone when she brought in food and announced that there was nothing for you. Not that I would expect someone to know what to get, but she could have at least tried. I...

Beverly--Congratulations!

Since you said that the symptons were just like what happens when you eat gluten, I would say that cross contamination is the culprit here. Food poisoning usually takes 6 to 72 hrs. to cause illness. They may have used the same knife or board as with bread or something when cutting the fruit. Hope you feel better soon
