ARCHIVED My Doc Said I Could Cheat....
Ursa Major replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Kate, you're right about not getting to the point of paranoia. But that is just it: We all make mistakes at times and get glutened. It is inevitable in this gluten-filled world. For a doctor to then go and say it is okay to gluten yourself on purpose is insane. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance With Eczema?
Ursa Major replied to PianoMan99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to have the blood panel done BEFORE you go gluten-free, otherwise you may end up with a false negative, even if you have celiac disease. You either are gluten intolerant, or you are not. It won't come and go throughout your life. If you can't tolerate gluten you should stop eating it forever. Once it's triggered and you react, that's it, no going... -
ARCHIVED And I Was Doing So Well....
Ursa Major replied to snowcoveredheart's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you didn't catch yourself before trying the liver pate and are sick. I hope that you'll feel better soon. Maybe next time you can use gluten-free bread crumbs? Then you can not only taste it, but eat it, too! And you won't have to remember to be careful. If everything else is gluten-free, why not go all the way and enjoy a carefree day? -
Anna, I seriously doubt that you could possibly have harmed your baby by taking flax seed oil. It isn't like you were drinking it by the bottle! Really, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

ARCHIVED Red Eyes
Ursa Major replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My eyes will burn and constantly tear when consuming any type of lectin food, including gluten. So, yes, being glutened will definitely affect my eyes as well. -
ARCHIVED Need Help And Advice Please....really Sick
Ursa Major replied to Annnettem's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think you totally misunderstand what Tiffany and I are saying. I believe that WHILE the cancer gets looked after, bloodwork should also be done to find serious, and during surgery, potentially life threatening deficiencies. What is wrong with looking after those things all at the same time? As NoGluGirl pointed out, if you're anemic and lack vitamin... -
ARCHIVED Baking
Ursa Major replied to mpmarker's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It would be better if you wouldn't bake things with flour in your kitchen. Some of the flour will definitely get into the air, and you will breathe it in. It will settle on your mucous membranes, and you will swallow it eventually, glutening yourself. NOBODY is allowed to bake with regular flour in my kitchen. In fact, gluten flour is banned from my house... -
ARCHIVED Need Help And Advice Please....really Sick
Ursa Major replied to Annnettem's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Margaret, NORMALLY it is rare to be deficient in magnesium or vitamin K. Unfortunately, for somebody with celiac disease it is quite common, because if your villi are flattened, you don't absorb nutrients. Therefore it isn't so farfetched to think that Annette might be deficient in several essential nutrients, including the abovementioned. -
Hi Monica, and welcome to these boards. I am sorry you are so unwell, I sure know how you feel, as you sound just like me most of my life. Except that you figured out the gluten problem about 30 years sooner. I am struggling with a low functioning thyroid as well. Do you have consistently low body temperatures? Start charting your temperatures now. Take...

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance With Eczema?
Ursa Major replied to PianoMan99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From everything I've read and heard, eczema is always caused by food intolerances. One food that often causes eczema and nausea, other than gluten, is dairy. Have you ever considered that you may be intolerant to dairy? My oldest granddaughter used to be covered from head to toe in eczema when she was a baby and toddler. It was so bad that she looked like... -
ARCHIVED Going Crazy Or Just A Concerned Parent
Ursa Major replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Barb, I just looked through the thread again, and you must have posted just before me, and I didn't initially see your reply. I just want to mention that your daughter's initial tTg was very high, and it had come down considerably at the seven month mark. It takes a while for the numbers to come down to normal, so it is possible that only the vitamin E... -
ARCHIVED Bloodwork Question...
Ursa Major replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Not everybody with celiac disease is anemic. So, while it is good that he isn't anemic, it doesn't rule out celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED Going Crazy Or Just A Concerned Parent
Ursa Major replied to JennyC's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Jenny, you're not being crazy at all, just cautious. Sending your son's lunch to school and making it very clear to him that he can't accept food from anybody else is common sense. How old is your son, is he able to take some responsibility for himself? And really, we as grownups will get glutened by well-meaning relatives, how much easier is it to do... -
ARCHIVED Need Help And Advice Please....really Sick
Ursa Major replied to Annnettem's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Excuse me Margaret, but in order to attend to her cancer and not possibly die during surgery because of low blood counts and bleeding to death because of possible low levels of vitamin K, she needs to have those looked at ASAP. And if she takes heart medication that is unnecessary, that could pose a risk for surgery as well. So, I am making those recommendations... -
ARCHIVED Need Help And Advice Please....really Sick
Ursa Major replied to Annnettem's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think you need to worry about toilet paper. But definitely lipstick. Think about it, it's on your lips, when you eat you obviously eat some of your lipstick, it's unavoidable! Diarrhea is one of the POSSIBLE symptoms of celiac disease, and so is constipation. You don't have to have all the possible symptoms (200 of them) to have celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED What About Breathing Flour In?
Ursa Major replied to sknisley22's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Last year I baked a cake for my husband for valentine's day, thinking that it might be okay. I didn't eat any or taste the batter, I was very careful. But I was sick for three days afterwards. The only possibility for getting glutened that time was because I was breathing in flour particles. If inhaling a tiny bit of flour from baking one cake makes me... -
Nicole, you're the mother, and if you feel that there is something else going on, you are right in wanting to investigate it. It is possible that there is a twisted bowel or an ulcer or any number of things a colonoscopy might detect. I hope it can all be figured out and fixed!

ARCHIVED Need Help And Advice Please....really Sick
Ursa Major replied to Annnettem's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Annette, have you been checked for low iron? Anemia is very common with celiac disease. When I had a ferritin count of 4 a few years ago (40 to 300 is normal) I was so weak that my legs would buckle many days when trying to get up, and I had to stay in bed. Also, you may have adrenal fatigue and/or hypothyroidism, they can also give you the symptoms you... -
ARCHIVED Pet Food Maker Announces Huge Recall
Ursa Major replied to larry mac's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Larry, I think you are misinterpreting this. They purposely put gluten into pet food, as a source of protein. Your dry dog food likely has gluten in it as well. And dogs don't digest gluten any better than humans, and hence don't live long and healthy lives as a result. I think that they are saying that something was WRONG with the gluten they put into... -
Hez, how old is your son? I always found that it was a good policy to call the parents a couple of days before any party (at least for little kids), to make sure their child brought home the invitation, and to let them know what your plans are, when the kids are supposed to arrive, what they need to bring (for the sleepover), and when the pickup time was...

ARCHIVED Preparing For Colonoscopy
Ursa Major replied to mojoBanjo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome to these boards. I have no idea why the doctor wants to do a colonoscopy, because in order to check for celiac disease, you'd need to have an endoscopy (going through your mouth and esophagus) with biopsies being taken. A colonoscopy would be useful in checking for Crohn's, for instance. Also, before you have the biopsies, you should... -
ARCHIVED Bath Products
Ursa Major replied to Cuervo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You need to look for things like wheat germ oil, barley extract, oat bran. I had a list of gluten ingredients in Latin, but can't find it. Other than something sounding like aveeno (oats) I don't remember what it said. -
ARCHIVED Baked Tosidos Scoops

If you mean Tostitos Scoops, I believe they are fine. -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Choose Endoscopy Or No Endoscopy For My Son.
Ursa Major replied to momof6's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, the reason why I said that the endoscopy is a good idea is, that the boy is still eating gluten. A lot of people will put a child back on gluten if the doctor says he wants to do an endoscopy after all, because they want to 'really know'. And that is more cruel than keeping him on gluten now (before he knows how good he might feel off it), do a biopsy...
