  1. You're more than welcome. Your husband's problem could be gastroparisis or a partial blockage caused by scar tissue or even a tumor. Sometimes a hard ball of stool gets lodged in the intestines and can cause something like this where new stool kind of squeezes around the ball so there is some passing of waste, usually in the form of diarreah. At any rate...
  2. It's when your intestines (or a section of them) become paralyzed, i.e. the slow rythmic muscle wall movent of the intestine that moves the waste along in the system ceases to be. It is usually caused by nerve damage (as from gut surgeries) or blood ciriculation impairment in the arteries and veins that feed the smooth muscles of the intestinal wall. With...
  3. Are you taling a folic acid supplement? Folic acid supplementation will mask a B12 deficiency and B12 deficiency results in pernicious anemia, as you probably know. Your post was difficult for me to follow because it kind of rambled but why do you say the low ferritin and rbc explain the bruises on your thigh that won't go away? That sounds like a clotting...
  4. That's a terrible experience! Doc had a bad aim, huh? Actually, even if he had not missed the liver, bleeding is one of the dangers with a liver biopsy. There's lots of blood supply to the liver.
  5. Yeah, I'd seen that first linked article by Dr. Reich several years ago. What is your age? The latest research suggests there is usually not good recovery of the flattened villi after about age 35 even when people go gluten free. Have you had a repeat biopsy since going gluten free? I had one in April afte 5+ years of concientous gluten free living and...
  6. I don't have an answer for you but I have a question: Do you have any recent records of total protein/albumin levels? After years of undiagnosed celiac disease and elevated alt/ast levels my total protein/albumin levels are chronically below normal even though I have been gluten free for about 6 years and my liver enzymes returned to normal range within ...
  7. It certainly could be related to gluten. Depression and some other mental health issues are more prevalent in the celiac population than in the general population. If you Google it I think you will find that out. What you are describing sounds like panic attacks. Why have you gone off your diet? Are your life circomstances more stressful lately than usual...
  8. Good question and I don't know the exact answer but I do know folic acid is water soluble. I would think it would be leached from the system rather quickly. That's why you don't have to be as careful with water soluble vitamin supplementation as you do fat soluble vitamin supplementation because the water soluble ones don't remain behind in the body's tissues...
  9. Sue, I am staff chaplain in a hospital setting and have encountered many patients with C-diff. It's nasty stuff and my heart goes out to you. Take heart, though, you will eventually conquer it. It is contracted most often by those who have suffered an imbalance in their gut microbial mix such as those who have been on prolonged antibiotic therapy for other...
  10. "Gluten Intolerance expert Ron Hoggan, author of Dangerous Grains, uses magnesium for rebuilding bones, and recommends it as the most important supplement for Celiac Disease." Whenever I try Magnesium supplementation I get the runs. Finally figured out it is the active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia.
  11. I would not expect this to be a problem since you are getting B12 injections but just for your information and future reference folic acid supplementation will mask B12 deficiency.
  12. B12 deficiency can cause neurological problems itself. How are your B12 and folic acid levels now? Are you getting B12 injections or taking folci acid supplements?
  13. Good question. The terminology seems to have morphed since I was digangosed with celiac disease 6 years ago and as mushroom indicated is in a state of flux. My current understanding, no - my impresssion, is that celiac disease is now being looked at by the scientific community as a subset of "gluten intolerance" that speaks particularly of an inflamatory...
  14. Thanks! That's good to know. I doubt if I could find that brand at Costco prices, however.
  15. For several years since going gluten free I have used Oberto's Original Flavor Beef Jerky as it WAS gluten free. The other flavors by Oberto had wheat in them but the Original didn't. I would buy the double pack at Costco because the price was so good. I checked it again today and it now has a wheat-based soy sauce in it. Beware.
  16. I am on calcium, 1000mg per day Vit D3 supplementation and get some magnesium in combo with the others and with multi vit. I am also on Fosamax. I have not persoally experienced any side effects from the Fosamax that I am aware of. Some people get bad uppper GI distress from Fosamax but I seem to tolerate it well. I am a 58-year-old male celiac with osteopenia...
  17. An antidepressant may help. Drugs like Xanax or ativan are hepful for acute episodes and for maintenance many of the common antidepressants are helpful such as efexor. From a mental healh perspective, there is a lot of overlap between depression and anxiety. One is almost the flip side of the other.
  18. As k-dawg said, the osteopenia/osteoporosis is probably more related to the bone density already lost before you were diagnosed with Celiac disease. The other consideration is the fact that osteoporosis can be due to other factors besides Celiac disease. Many people have osteoporosis but do not have Celiac disease. It can be a hereditary condition whose exact...
  19. Quinoa. Yes, that's correct, quinoa. See my post from yesterday.
  20. Millet is just a form of rice I think. If you do okay with rice then you should be okay with millet. Have you tried amarynth? It is delicious but a little spendy. Actually, I'm not going to miss quinoa much as I don't like the taste. It smells and tastes like wet, moldy grass seed to me.
  21. Quinoa gives me severe GI distress when I eat it as a breakfast cereal or a side dish but when combined with other grains such as corn in noodles I seem to be okay with it. Perhaps with the noodles the difference is the concentration or the processing that either dilutes the offensive ingredient or changes it in some way. From the research I've done I think...
  22. I have been taking a proton pump inhibitor for about 5 years now to control GERD. I take Protonix 40mg daily. It works very well to control the GERD. I do not notice any side effects. My concern, however, is that it will have a negagive effect on calcium absorption because of raising stomach PH. Calcim, iron and some other minerals need an acid environment...
  23. I don't know about the pyloric stenosis but the others are all auto immune conditions. One theory about pyloric stenosis is that it is an allergic reaction.
  24. I don't have bleeding gums but do have problem with sensiitve teeth. Anymore I hate to get my teeth cleaned every six months at the dentist because they are so painfully sensitive to cold liquids for 2-3 weeks after cleaning.
  25. Back to you main question; the relationship between Vit D deficiency and Celiac Disease. Vit D is one of the fat souable vitamins. Destrucition of the nutrient absorbing micro villi seems to particularly affect the absorbption of fat soluable nutrients, which is exacebated if you also have chronic diarehah. Many celiacs notice the undigested fat floating...
