I am so excited for your daughter! Tell her congratulations! As a parent of a 6 year old girl with Celiac and EE, it is so important to show an example of why you don't let Celiac stop you from going after what you want in life. The diet restrictions are a tough part, but it won't hold you back if you don't let it.

ARCHIVED 2 Yr. Old Undiagnosed
mommida replied to Lori and Kieran's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have found research on-line and was told by the ped. gastro. about the testing not being as reliable in a child under 24 months. This on-line research and testing was done almost 5 years ago ~ I never heard if newer testing was any more reliable. The reason for the unreliable results in that age group is based on the belief of a child's untried/developing... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Test Is Neg. - Now What?
mommida replied to Mizyellow's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The blood tests aren't as reliable in patients under 24 months. The only way you can really diagnose Celiac at this age is to do the endoscopy with biopsy. (WITH BIOPSIES, make sure you discuss this with your doctor and more than one biopsy is being done even if it is "normal looking" tissue.) It seems extreme as a parent to put your child through this... -
ARCHIVED 11 Month Old With celiac disease/gi?
mommida replied to ARmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, an 11 month old can have Celiac. Testing for Celiac for patients under 24 months of age is not as reliable. Call your Ped. and get a refferal to a pediatric gastroenterologist. DO NOT CHANGE THE DIET to eliminate gluten until the testing is done. There are other conditions that have the same symptoms (some of which can improve on a gluten free diet... -
ARCHIVED Do Your Kids Cry For Food They Can't Have?
mommida replied to SAHM2one's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Autumn's mom, My daughter's recent EE diagnoses could require a feeding tube in the future. I was looking up some of the "fun" eating and they suggested suckers and cotton candy. I would also assume slurpees and popsicles would be safe too. Things that are pretty much pure sugar and wouldn't have other proteins. Do you still and give her the amino... -
ARCHIVED Headaches Worse On Gluten Free Diet?
mommida replied to LizM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had memingitis and had to battle headaches for three years after. If you want to try my relief tip, here it is. Smartwater (water supplemented with magnesium and patassium) with a sublingual vitamin B12 tablet. Deep breathing (imitate a smoker) remembering what it feels like not to have a headache. Stretch out your neck muscles by dropping your chin... -

Celiac Specialties or maybe Specialty in Chesterfield township. They have THE BEST gluten free doughnuts! If I remember right they are 23 mile and Jefferson. Some of the local health food stores sell the products in the frozen food sections. -

ARCHIVED Stevia Users Beware
mommida replied to Samma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a kind correction.... If maltodextrin made in the US has a wheat base it is fully listed on the label. (I've only seen it once on a can of Pacific soup.) -

My daughter was diagnosed when she was 17 months old. She is 6 now. Symptoms sound the same. Just remember that little tummy is damaged pretty bad and try and keep to a gentle on the tummy diet foods. I remember one thing that was suggested was avacados. She wouldn't eat them, still won't eat 'em. This is HUGE advice. Get your gluten free snacks and... -

Welcome to the board! It is a hard decision to have the biopsy. You don't want to put your child through something that has risk (routine procedures still have risk, it is an out patient procedure and a lax attitude makes me get more nervous ) ~ especially if you feel you have your answer. The biopsy will tell you if there is damage, if the damage... -
ARCHIVED Artificial Sweetener's Side Effects & Dangers
mommida replied to oblio-a's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OK. I'm jumping on this thread late, and haven't poured over every post. I went to buy stevia in a large canister, and can't remember the brand. The label said consuming too much could cause a laxative affect. I put it back on the shelf and never looked back. I believe some people are having a bad experience with stevia, and others are having a... -

Keep a food journal. Your son may have other food sensitivities and it could help pinpoint any gluten mistakes in products. Detail the food intake & time Do a mood check, any symptoms next keep track of BM or vomitting Now you need to keep a gluten fre snack and treat bag. You are going to realize how much kids are rewarded with treats. i.e... -

It does appear that previous posts have now been edited. The comments that went further than "There is no gluten in American made MSG that we know of at this time" were out of line. Your opinion was not asked for. -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
mommida replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Peter, you know I don't have any issue with the way have replied to any post here. We are assuming every poster is Celiac or DH, which is not correct. Others are avoiding gluten for various reasons. I have seen a topical skin reaction from gluten. If a person is on this site, they are avoiding gluten. I think they need help, especially if they have... -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?

I've been around long enough to see information/statistics change. I.E. statistical rate for occurance of Celiac 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 300, to 1 in 133 Americans. With more and more imports of ingredients coming from other countries. I would have preferred to see the posters ask for the information source and/ or provide the correct information kindly and... -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
mommida replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some children have serious illness to deal with and vaccine ingredients would definately make things much much worse. You have to know that a gluten free diet is needed to treat different illness, allergy, and intolerance. Some people are dealing with Celiac and other diseases at the same time. If you are lucky enough to only have Celiac, I hope you will... -
ARCHIVED If Your Kid Is "glutened" Should You Consider Vaccines?
mommida replied to inskababy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I hope you don't leave over this! Vaccines are always a controversial subject. You as the parent have the right to make an informed decision about vaccines. ~ Religious exemption is accepted in all states. Some states have a philosophical exemption. There is a medical exemption. ~ Read the vaccine package insert, before you make the decision. There... -
Different celiac disease Allergy And Alcohol Reactions?
mommida replied to David's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Alcohol has a stronger affect on me since being gluten free. I was having a fine gluten free cocktail (Nursing that puppy all night, until it was too diluted from the ice) Than someone offered a taste sample of a shot. I asked what was in it and it should have been gluten free. BIG mistake, always ask the bartender that made the drink. Well it must have... -

Hopefully the anemia will resolve soon, and there will be no pica. Interesting that you mention chocolate!!? Have you ever seen the movie "Like water for Chocolate"? I think the sister character had Celiac. The end of the movie shows the main character eating matches. It's pretty slow, but I did laugh my tush off about the knitting for sexual frustration... -
ARCHIVED Coughing Fits With Gluten Intolerance?
mommida replied to DaisyMay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Foxfire is correct. If you are going for a diagnoses you need to be ingesting gluten. Make sure even "normal" looking tissue is biopsied.
