    My husband reacts to reg. Fritos and the manufacturer that makes them, when contacted, said that there's no gluten in them, but they are produced in a plant that makes wheat products. Perhaps that's the issue: Cross contamination....

    Good point Timber4est. That would be a sneaky way for a quack to declare a celiac as healed and move onto the next victim. Meanwhile the first celiac would be in for trouble.

    Having done this myself for other reasons I would recommend that you copy their little "love letter about preventative testing" and write a calm, reasonable worded letter to their "Appeals and Review" Dept. and ask them to re-consider paying for the celiac testing as this would definitely be "preventative testing" and would take the guesswork out of whether...

    Laura It's very understandable that you'd be depressed over this. We've had a lot of discussions on other threads about this and the last one turned pretty untame. I am a lapsed Catholic, so I understand the frustration. I don't agree with the church leaders but all I can say is stay in prayer about this. D.

    Just a thought here but if there really was a cure, which I am sure isn't true, it would be broadcasted by the Celiac Sprue Assoc or the wonderful hospitals that are involved in celiac research (which I can't remember who they are but they are in Maryland, Chicago, Calif and NYC). Until they (see above) declare a cure exists I wouldn't start chasing...

    but if they produce it and engines are modified; do you think that growers may get more money for their crops from "refineries" than food processors would pay? Growers would prefer to sell to refineries for more profit, leaving food consumers out in the cold? or we'd pay much more for corn food products?

    I really recommend reading a series of books by James Herriott (UK) . He was a veterinanian in 1930-1980s about. In one of his books he mentions that some vets ditch their animal patients if they are "poor doers" (meaning they can't help them get better). I was surprised at that..that's inhuman.

    some additional thoughts: I sometimes cry at night in worry over my husband's newly diagnosed peripherial neuropathy as it's progressing in his legs. This is due to the mis diagnosed celiac over 26 years. I ask myself, will he not be able to walk or drive the car? How will we live? I cannot afford to buy a home and get a handicapped ramp...

    I have been lactose intolerant for 28 years and here's what I've learned 1) some lunch meats have a derivitative of dairy (lactic) in them. I find that they bother me. 2) sometimes the lactose pills don't work on solid foods (work better in liquid dairy like when having ice cream or milk shake) they work "pot-shot." 3) I get less lactose reaction...

    I think that another thing that complicates this issue, and I don't know how one would get around this, is that unless the doctor has reason to suspect celiac, he cannot order a blood test to detect it (meaning insurance won't pay for a blood test when there's no reason to suspect a certain disease). This is why years ago a mammogram wasn't covered unless...
