Hi all! I have recently been diagnosed and I'm still learning. Last night my husband made a beer can chicken in our smoker but made me a chicken breast of my own. After we ate I got really ill. I'm assuming its from the beer being in the smoker. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

I'm not sure I understand just what happened. If your serving of chicken was prepared separately from the smoked chicken, I would not expect there to be anything to worry about.

The can of beer sat inside a chicken boiling beer into the chicken body. My chicken sat next to it in the smoker. Would the beer steam have contaminated my chicken?

Steam wouldn't have large molecules in it. It's a gas. I think some of the beer could have splattered on your chicken. What else have you smoked on those grates? Things marinated In a soy sauce based marinade? Did he slop beer on his tongs and then use them on your chicken? So many ways this could be an issue.

I would think that as the beer-butt-chicken would cook, it would spatter around the grill....up the butt or not. Your chicken woudl be subjected to be cross contamination as well.  But(t), I bet is was good though.   Hope you feel better soon. :)

I'm not sure what goes on when he is out there smoking the meat. It could have been any of those things. What would you suggest we do to make sure the smoker is clear?

Nope, not beer steam.  I would have to be tangible particles splashed onto the chicken, possible in this case.

Then i wouldn't eat anything he made until he is ready to take your illness seriously.

If he is interested in smoking safe food for you - you can put the grill/ grates in a self clean oven and run the clean cycle. Then scrape any soot off and wash well. Or replace the grates. Or cook food on foil or a foil grill pan. The easiest thing we have found is to just not use anything with gluten on the grill. It's too hard to remember to use this utensil and not that one. Don't pick that up and carry it across the gluten-free item, etc.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
