Mc D's gluten-free Burgers & Wendy's Frosty Cone

I'm sorry if anyone has already posted about these things. I did a quick search and found nothing.

I see that the McDonald's near me now offers gluten-free burgers. Has anyone tried this? Are they on gluten-free buns? I don't think I'll ever have the nerve to try them, but I wondered if anyone has and whether or not they had reactions.

I also see that Wendy's offers frosty CONES now. And now I feel like I can't have that anymore because the machine might touch the cones and get crumbs on it, and then I could get poisoned. Wendy's frosties were the ONE thing I felt safe getting, and I'm having a hard time coping with this. Has anyone had a frosty at a Wendy's where frosty cones are served? Any reactions?

Please & thanks.

I think if you are that worried about Wendy's soft serve machine -  I can't imagine how you would consider McDonalds!  In the Us, I have not heard of any gluten-free buns.  I know some people do eat the fries and the plain patties and are fine.  I'm not sure I would trust them not to mess up the hamburger patties, but that is me.

I occasionally have a Wendy's frosty or Dairy Queen or TCBY.  They come downwards, out of a machine so cc from a cone is unlikely.  However, eating out is always a risk.

Sure.  But if you have a dairy issue you wouldn't eat ice cream!  :D

Hmmm...  Rather strange.  Do you think they think there is gluten in whey?

No, whey is a dairy product is it not?

The only thing i can think of as an issue with an ice cream machine is CC.

Of course not!  Whey is made from milk.  Thus.... " But if you have a dairy issue you wouldn't eat ice cream"

if you have an ice cream maker, you can make your own frosty shakes - just google the recipe.  there are several - the one i make is with heavy (whipped) cream, but there are some with cool whip instead, so it would be even easier.  it's already stupid-easy, i think the ingredients are:  chocolate syrup, condensed milk, milk, vanilla, and heavy cream or cool whip.  pow! - frosties!  :D

*includes dairy products but all gluten free  :)  i use the heavy cream, because i never saw a cool whip cow lolz but even cool whip is gluten-free

Udis corp owners have said they are talking to big burger chains so I'm not suprised MCD is doing a test run somewhere.

The way foods get thrown around at Mc Ds, I can see a serious CC problem there :o .

We tried Red Robin a couple of weeks ago and that was a big jump and I think that they'd be a little better trained or informed than the high school freshman a Mc Ds.

My eldest works at McD's and even then.....I'm not sure I would allow my youngest to eat something that McD's considered gluten free. She will take him on occasion and he'll get some apples and some ice cream as a treat from his big sister and so he can get some of the Happy Meal toys. :)

We haven't really gone out to eat much though, still not at a trusting level with anyone....though we do have a local pizza joint that we frequent for pizzas as they have a gluten free pizza that isn't outrageously priced and they don't make the dough onsite so not floating flour. :)

And I think I'm one of the few that doesn't think Wendy's anything is all that great. We do like to go to Cherry Berry on occasion...I like that everything is clearly marked and we've never had a problem and it's a frozen dairy product that mom can eat!!! :) Yay!

Red Robin restaurant in S. CA has gluten free buns. They also said they put the fries in a separate fryer.  Also, I went to a deli that had gluten free bread. You have to ask for a gluten free menu. Most menus include things without any bread. Salads, burgers etc.

I can't tell you how many times people have said to me, "Oh, you can't eat this because it contains whey." I just tell 'em whey is not gluten and I'm good.

Been to Red Robin. The manager told us that they all learn the ins and outs of gluten-free cooking/serving and take it all very seriously. They said they used Udi's buns and dedicated fryers. It was absolutely and positively one of the most out of this world delicious meals I've had in a long time!!!

I haven't tried it, but McDonald's has had gluten free buns for years in the Scandinavian countries, where celiac is especially prevalent.  So they may have good practices established over there that they're trying out here now.  Not going to rush out to try it, but i wouldn't mind eating a Big Mac once in awhile if they can do it safely.

I can't prove it, but I truly believe I have been glutened by airborne particles. I used to take care of shelter cats once per week at a pet store, and no matter how careful I was, I would get glutened each time even if I wore a mask and gloves and washed up well after I was done. I believe the problem was that because I'm short, I couldn't do the the tasks without getting my head and shoulders inside their cages, and so the particles from their food would be all over my hair and top of my shirt. Then I had to drive home, so even if I didn't get glutened right then, the particles would be in my car just waiting for me to get in the car so they could get blown into my face again. I gave up that volunteer gig and stopped getting glutened so often and at such regular intervals.

Hello, @MogwaiStripe, Vitamin D is turned into its activated forms by Thiamine.  Thiamine deficiency can affect Vitamin D activation. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14913223/ Thiamine deficiency affects HLA genes.  HLA genes code for autoimmune diseases like Celiac, Thyroiditis, Diabetes, etc.  Thiamine deficiency inside a cell triggers a toggle switch on the gene which in turn activates autoimmune diseases carried on the gene.  The reference to the study is in my blog somewhere.  Click on my name to go to my page, scroll down to the drop down menu "Activities" and click on blogs.

Hello, @annamarie6655, Yes, there's many of us who react to airborne gluten!   Yes, animal feed, whether for chickens or cats or dogs, can release airborne gluten.  I can get glutened from the bakery section at the grocery store.   The nose and mouth drain into the digestive system and can trigger systemic reactions.   I find the histamine release in response to airborne gluten will stuff up my sinuses and bother my eyes.  High histamine levels do cause anxiety and migraines.  The muscle spasms can be caused by high histamine, too.  The digestive system may not manifest symptoms without a higher level of gluten exposure.   Our bodies make an enzyme, DAO (diamine oxidase), to break down histamine.   Pyridoxine B 6, Cobalamine B12, Vitamin C, copper, zinc, and iron are needed to make DAO.  DAO supplements are available over the counter.  Taking a B Complex supplement and additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) helps reduce the amount of histamine being released.  Mast cells without sufficient Thiamine have an itchy trigger finger and release histamine at the slightest provocation.  Thiamine helps mast cells refrain from releasing their histamine.    I find taking additional TTFD thiamine helps immensely with neurological symptoms as TTFD can easily cross the blood brain barrier without a carrier.  High histamine in the brain can cause the muscle spasms, anxiety and migraines.  Vitamin C really helps with clearing histamine, too.   The Digiorno pizza mystery reaction could have been caused by a reaction to the cheese.  Some people develop lactose intolerance.  Others react to Casein, the protein in dairy, the same as if to gluten because Casein resembles the molecular structure of gluten.  An enzyme used in some dairy products, microbial transglutaminase, causes a gluten reaction because it is the same as the tissue transglutaminase our bodies make except microbes make it.  Those tTg IgA blood tests to diagnose celiac disease measure tissue transglutaminase our bodies release as part of the autoimmune response to gluten.   You're doing great!  A Sherlock Holmes award to you for figuring out the connection between airborne gluten and animal feed!!!

I’m wondering if anyone has had any experience with the gluten challenge. My teenager completed a gluten challenge over the summer, it ended up being 10 weeks although she stopped being consistent eating gluten after 6. Her previous endoscopy was negative but this past August it was positive after the gluten challenge. If you have done the gluten challenge, how long did it take you to feel back to normal? It took about two months before she got “glutened” again but now she’s having difficult coming back from that and has a lot of fatigue. I’m hoping someone has some advice!
