What Did I Eat?!?

Georgia-guy

Georgia-guy Enthusiast

Today I have had:

Fritos

Diet Coke

Mission Brand Corn Tortillas

Uncle Ben's Boil in Bag Rice

Black Beans

Johnny Appleseed Hard Cider

I'm nauseous, doubled over in pain (not my usual belly area, it's right side just below the rib wrapping around to the back), and upper abdominal cramps. I don't see anything that could have had gluten?!?

I don't see anything with gluten, fiber ( except the beans), or any veggies or fruit? Sorry, hard cider doesn't count as fruit.

You might just be having a bad day. I have noticed a lot of people, including myself have felt pretty good right at the beginning of the gluten free diet, then they will revert back to having issues and go back and forth between feeling good and having issues for a while. Hopefully it is just this one bad day for you. The only thing I can see on your list of foods that might cause some trouble would be the Black Beans. They can be a hard to digest food and cause a lot of internal gas if you aren't used to them. Oh, and watch out for artificial sweetener. It can be a problem for some people and cause cramping, etc. I haven't touched the stuff in 15 years, makes me very ill. Better luck tomorrow :-)

Kept getting worse, so I'm spending my evening at the hospital....with talk of gallbladder. :-/

HavaneseMom Explorer

Oh no! Hope they get to the bottom of it and you feel better soon.

Ugh...that stinking gallbladder. Had mine out in February. Keep us posted...hope you feel better soon!

If gallstones do not show up on an ultrasound, ask for a HIDA scan which checks for function. Can't digest those Fritos if your gallbladder is not squeezing out bile!

Feel better soon! Been there!

I had a HIDA scan a couple years ago, showed it was "hyperactive" if memory serves right

LauraTX Rising Star

I was about to mention gallbladder!  What you describe is classic symptoms.  Like cyclinglady said, ask for a HIDA scan if what they do shows nothing... you may have to do it at a follow up with your regular doctor.

I hope you feel better soon and at least are getting some pain meds!  Let us know.

Georgia-guy Enthusiast

They can't give me more than ibuprofen. I came by myself (I love when you're standing there alone and they ask "are you alone?") and I can't have many pain meds.

Yeti24 Newbie

I agree with them. I had very similar pains every couple of months, Ended up in emergency quite often. Ultrasound always showed no gall stones. So finally had a HIDA scan, and my gall bladder was functioning at zero percent. Had it removed, and have not had an attack since. Life is so much better without that pain. It's hard enough watching everything you eat because of the Celiac, but also having to avoid all the gall bladder triggers as well was very hard. Hopefully you find out what your issue is. But if it is your gall bladder, the day it comes out will be a great day for you.

cyclinglady Grand Master

Well, maybe being on a gluten-free diet might actually save your gallbladder. I am doing well without my gallbladder, which was removed almost a decade before my celiac disease dx. But it would be nice to have kept it. It is the family curse!!!!!

mbr22m Rookie

It might be the corn. I have problems with it sometimes, especially GMO corn. Check this out.Open Original Shared Link

Or maybe additional intolerances like rice or fructose. I had to go on a low fodmap diet because I was having same issues. Everything I ate was gluten-free but I was still sick and ultrasound showed nothing.

Your body may not be ready to handle alcohol yet or you could have been glutened by something you consumed up to a couple days ago. I hope it is one of those two things and not your gallbladder or something else more serious. Hope your feeling better today.

Except for some fiber in the beans, everything you are eating is totally devoid of nutrition, kiddo.

You need some protein and some veggies!!. How about you drink some water?.

If you are just diagnosed, you may want to hold off on the alcohol a bit.

It could be your gall bladder, or it could just be that those foods are not super healthy and your body is telling you: give me something

substantial, please....lol...... Just sayin.  -_-

I agree  your  diet  for that  day  was  poor  to  say the least... And  I agree gallbladders can cause havoc....Our  American  diet  lacks  so  much. Many people  think  if  the  gov't  permits  that  food  then it is  very safe  for  us to eat  regular  of gluten-free same  mind  set  for  some...Think of  your body as a  working  machine, a  piece  of  fine  art.... Would  you  put  diesel in a  gas  car? Not  change  oil?  What  would  happen to a  million  dollar  painting (art)  if  they  left  it in  the  rain  unprotected?  well, the  same  is  for  our  bodies, we  need  healthy gluten-free  food  to give us the  energy, &  vitality   to  last  throughout the  day, 24  hours... We  need  to  refuel often.. When we  only eat  processed  junk &  alcoholic  beverages we  are  not  fueling  the  body .. Instead we are  making  it  sluggish  &  run down. Continue with  this  lifestyle   you will age  more  quickly  with more  illness  around  the corner...

I hope  you feel better  soon.... this is a  hard lesson to learn.....hugs...

The reason for the low nutrient foods is because my check was about $350 short, so I had to try and make it stretch as much as possible which meant cheap food. I did get some money off a pawn today and went and bought salad fixings (romaine blend lettuce, not the water only iceberg), broccoli to make broccoli Alfredo, some Sonoma veggies burgers (anxious to try those), apples, and a few other things.

But that being said, last night all they did was blood work, and asked if I have had ultrasounds before (I have, showed no stones), and a HIDA scan (I have, showed gallbladder was over-stimulated). So no ultrasound last night, no HIDA scan scheduled, and just was given pain meds (not taking that crap), and a "return if symptoms get worse" note. Such a wonderful hospital it is.

You asked about the food and we answered. :) I have to say that $7 for hard cider. $2-3 for Fritos - that's a lot of frozen veggies and rice and carrot sticks.

The cider and Fritos were left over from shopping last payday.

Hey Georgia Guy...are you feeling better today? One thing you could do is keep a food diary of what you eat and the symptoms you get. Someone on here suggested that to me and it helped me figure out some stuff that bothers my digestive system and confirms that I do best when eating whole foods.

Why aren't there frozen veggies and some frozen chicken left from last payday? :)

I'm just saying what I am saying to my kid on his own with a food budget for the first time. If you don't plan for running out of money - you will suffer.

Yep it happens to all of us eventually... our bodies revolt against the eating of crap... it's sad but you'll adjust, and you'll appreciate the little treats you'll get to have even more. I still miss the good old days when I could eat anything, but it's not fun anymore when the price is so high. I still have my memories, but it is sometimes hard to admit that I have devoured my last orange cheese puff. Stay strong! You'll get there and it won't be as hard as you think! When you're used to eating healthier, it's amazing how possible it is to create healthy versions of things you used to eat and they taste really good!

If you are looking to save money on healthier foods, have you checked out Aldi's? They have some awesome produce specials each week and great prices on a lot of other staple foods. My Aldi's even has some gluten-free foods and some delicious hummus for a great price.

I don't have an Aldi's nearby. :-( But I have heard talk of possible plans to build one in my town!

Sorry you are struggling to find foods that don't disagree with you. Sure, your diet was not so hot, but I'd agree with those who place the blame on the black beans. They're chock full of stuff that feeds bad bacteria.

Your symptoms sound a whole lot like mine, before I was diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis. I was sure it was gallbladder pain - it was classic upper right/stabbing pain into my back. But all the probing and testing never found anything wrong w/ the thing. However, a course of Entocort later and I haven't had a single pain in my abdomen, except when I was running and got a stitch in my side. That's it.

Now I'm determined to raise the alarm about microscopic colitis to everyone here! :) It's easily treated w/ Entocort, which is cheap compared to most drugs. If you keep having problems, your GI doc can do a colonoscopy and test for it. Just make sure they do a bunch of biopsies throughout your large intestine.

No, Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     I take both of these and a B Complex.
    • xxnonamexx
what Benfotiamine should I take as Life Extension contains both Ben and TTFD.
    • knitty kitty
I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.
    • xxnonamexx
Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks
