Vertigo

I have not had vertigo in years. Glutened myself on Monday, woke up today with vertigo. It's only bad when I move certain ways. If anyone else gets this, how long does it last for you?

I feel like cursing I am really mad about this symptom I guess because it wasn't expected.

I'm just wondering, have you had vertigo linked with gluten in the past?

The trouble with vertigo is it has many different causes, including gluten.

I only ask as I had a type of vertigo that I attributed to gluten cc that went on for months and it turned out it was cervical dizziness caused by an old whiplash injury.

I'm sure others will chime in with their experiences but if it goes on get it checked out.  If it isn't gluten something like BPPV could be easily remedied.

i had vertigo before i was diagnosed.  like, i couldn't even drive without having an anxiety attack.  it has since disappeared, so i am chalking that up to the celiac as well as so many other (seemingly unrelated) symptoms.  i had it checked out at the emergency room and followed up with my g.p. who referred me to an ear, nose & throat specialist who told me my ear canals were inflamed and blocking the fluid in my middle ear.  he said it must be from allergies and put me on claritin.  it got better, but i couldn't stand on a chair or ladder and i had to compose myself before ascending any stairs.  since i have been gluten-free, my balance is back to normal.

so, if you're worried, have it checked out (i did)(it's scary) but it could possibly be from gluten.  (i have often thought that if gluten causes inflammation, it could have swelled up my ear canals??  who knows...)  just glad it's gone!  i hope you feel better :)

The vertigo only lasted a little while. I have felt some dizziness, but not the spinning sensation since then. Now I am having edema, but only stage 2. Thanks for the replies!

Eta- I was having a sharp pain in my ear. I always get ear pain from gluten, I can't even get a q-tip in my ear it hurts so bad. It is never usually a sharp pain though, so that took me by surprise.

Has this resolved for you? I had a horrendous cold earlier this month. At the end I had horribly plugged ears...since that cleared I've had lightheadedness every day. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow. It is frustrating and anxiety producing. I've read about labyrinthitis which is an inner ear swelling that causes this type of thing and it often comes on after a cold. So...2 weeks later I'm still hoping for it to go away. It is not as severe now as when it started. I do have an appointment next week with an ENT. I hope it resolves before then!

How are you now Iceland girl? My resolved in about a week. I had vertigo once before going gluten free and it lasted four weeks. It was awful. The doctor gave me head exercises to do, which cleared it up.

It is almost gone and I'm so thankful. One thing that still seems to bring it on is large stores...done know if it's all the lights or what. I'm thinking it was something related to that cold...Some kind of swelling. Very uncomfortable. I'm so glad yours resolved!

This is really helpful  I had not considered sugar alcohols or inulin as triggers. Thanks for the practical baking tips too color coding and baking G F first makes a lot of sense. Thiamax (TTFD) plus a B-complex, and if you want benfotiamine, the Life Extension formula covers that at ~100 mg.

High fiber can definitely cause sudden GI distress especially if it’s a new addition but accidental gluten exposure can feel similar. Keeping a simple food/symptom log and introducing new gluten-free foods one at a time can really help you spot the pattern. sorry a bit confused so I should take my B complex along with Objective Nutrients Thiamax for TTFD but what about a Benfotiamine to take. The Life extensions contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine together or im confusing myself. I am trying to see if I take Thiamax what should I take for Benfotiamine. Thanks EDITING after further research I see ones water soluble ones fat soluble. So I guess 100MG as you suggested of Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. and the Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     would work for me.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.
