Laura, Very important question--what color was your dress for the wedding? I can't tell by the picture. Did the bridesmaids wear the same color?

I like to picture things

Rinne, if the girl is 16, can you approach HER and not her parents? GIve her lots of celiac.com info, and most importantly, tell her YOU BELIEVE HER and that you know what she is going through. Does she have a website on Lame Advertisement? Maybe there's a way you can email her? And you can ask her to tell her parents that SHE came across these things on the internet (sort of true, right?)--she would certainly undestand that you don't want to destroy your relationship with her parents. Maybe she can even bring celiac.com downloads to the school nurse and hope that the school nurse has some sense?

Just a thought--I really don't have a clue how your friend's mind works, so sorry if this is off the mark.

Evie, I am hoping to see you back on and know that you are at home and hopefully doing better. We are all thinking about you and praying for you. I hope the doctors treat you well and help you find some relief.

i've been reading .... rinne and carla, in particular, i am thinking about you both. xoxo

Thank you. :)

You look beautiful in that picture. I know you're concerned about your weight, but you carry "the lack of it" very well!!!

I haven't been through what you guys (or should I say gals :) ) have either, but I still like to try and be there for everyone.

Rachel has been sweet enough to educate me on some things too.....which is nice.

Still learning and bookmarking pages for further reference.....as long as my computer doesn't die.

I sometimes feel the same way...I don't have nearly the problems that many on this thread do, but I do feel like I might be headed there, so this thread is just a life saver for me! I don't know what I'd do without YOUR support!!!

Well girls and ocassional guys, I've tried to read the last 4 pages, but can't remember a single thing...THOUGHTS DINGOED BIG TIME...hopefully work will be slower tomorrow so I can reread. Some of the things posted by Rinne and Rachel were really good. I cut and pasted some of the mercury stuff into my running mercury info document.

I survived my day yesterday and the singing went well, lol It was a long day and there were times when I actually didn't think I would make it--almost asked them to just take me home. Several times I felt really light-headed and almost nauseated. The car was really hot, and I think that just didn't help.

First was church...had to be there by 7:30 to rehearse our small group song, then at 8:00 was rehearsal for choir stuff...service starts at 9:00, lol. Then our church is participating in the Beautiful Day ministries, and my friend and I have been helping them at the information table, so after the service did that for a while. Then it was off to my friend's house (ate in the car on the way over to her house), where we waited for her friends to pick us up...we went to see The King and I at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts...it was fun...very nice show. Then we went to dinner at Outback--they picked that place because they have gluten-free stuff for me!

I didn't get home until 6:30 and was just exhausted. Took my blood pressure cuz I could just tell it was down--91/55. I made sure I drank plenty of water throughout the day, and as hectic as my day sounds, I actually ate well, lol.

Yes, very important!!! Oh, and one of the things I forgot was to say that Laura's new picture is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Wow!

I think you are totally on the mark :) but maybe cause some of what you suggest I have already done. In the summer when I first learned of this she and I talked and I made it very clear to her that I completely believed her. I also told her about Celiac.com at that point so it is possible that she has visited. When I see her again, and I am going to make a point of it, I will get her email address. That's a great suggestion, thanks. :)

Yes, where is Richard?

I've started the Samento for the treatment of Lyme and the information I am finding says that it is good for all autoimmune disorders.

Some of the beneficial properties of Samento are attributed to the pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids(POAs) that are found in the plant that act on the cellular immune system and demonstrate powerful immune system modulating properties. SAMENTO does not contain the tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids (TOAs) that are found in traditional Cat's Claw. TOAs disrupt central nervous system function and greatly inhibit the effects of the POAs.

Some researchers believe that Samento may be as much as 1000 times more effective than Cat’s Claw. One difference between Samento and Cat’s Claw is that Cat’s Claw is an immune system stimulant and Samento is an immune system modulator. Also, Samento can be used to treat all autoimmune disorders; this is not the case with regular Cat’s Claw.

In May 2005, pharmacological studies were conducted in laboratory rodents at the University of Guayaquil . The anti-inflammatory effect study showed that Nutramedix Samento extract inhibits inflammation by 83.8%.

There are no known contraindications, no known side effects and no known interactions with other drugs when using Samento. In May 2005, toxicology studies were conducted on Nutramedix Samento at the University of Guayaquil, Ecuador. No toxic effects were reported even when laboratory rodents received 120,000 times the equivalent human dose.

I wonder if anyone has used Samento for Celiac disease. <_<

"Samento from the Peruvian rainforest is a favorite for stimulating the immune system. Worldwide research done on this powerful herb has led scientists to patent many of the single chemicals found in it for use in healing cancer, arthritis, AIDS and other diseases. However, traditional wisdom shows that using the whole plant can be far more powerful than any one isolated ingredient. Dr. Brent W. Davis referred to Samento as "the opener of the way" because of its remarkable ability to cleanse the entire intestinal tract. Because of this ability, Samento can be used for Crohn's disease, hemorrhoids, parasites, leaky bowel syndrome, ulcers, gastritis, allergic disorders, diverticulitis, stabilizing intestinal flora and other gastrointestinal issues.

It would seem that Samento would be good to take for quite a variety of problems including Celiac.

Changing subjects....kind of .... but because of my issues and my weight loss (97 and dropping), my monthly friend has now stopped. Sniffle. (And yes, I tested to make sure it was not for other reasons). I was shocked, but my mom said she was just waiting for it to happen, basically. I am losing my curves, have no fat, no boobs, and now, no period....... :(

:o Wow! That must be a little scarey! I'll be so happy when your testing is done! Thinking of you!!!

I couldn't remember if you had already started, but it seemed like I remembered it was right after the wedding...praying it really won't be bad at all! I say do whatever you can to pamper and take care of yourself...do nothing, sleep, watch favorite movies, whatever makes you relaxed and calm and feel better.

Laura, you look radiant in that photo, how special to have so many wonderful memories. :) As for the dress, I am glad it worked out in the end. I know what it is like to lose breasts and hips, though not quite to the extreme you have, it is still shocking.

Last Christmas my sweetie gave me a $200.00 gift certificate for my favourite lingerie store. I purchased a purple lace bra embroidered with lilac flowers that was/is stunning, it cost nearly the whole amount and I lucked out because it was on sale. I never would have been able to indulge if it was more than the gift certificate, not because of my sweetie but because I do have limits. It was the first time that I ever owned such a beautiful bra and I didn't wear it everyday, I might have worn it four or five times and I discovered it was too big for me. :( After some debate I went looking for falsies  and found expensive silicone, how do you spell that?, ones and that worked for a brief while. To sum it up, I've gone from a 36DD to a 32D and the best thing I can think to say about that is to quote Cybil Sheperd, "the great thing about aging breasts is that you can wear them up, or you can wear them down".:lol::lol:

Donna, how are you doing?

Susan, I think you are right, there are people who have celiac disease and nothing else. The thing is, I don't have celiac, but am gluten intolerant and I'm not getting better. I feel like my gluten intolerance was actually triggered by something else ... and this probably happens for some celiacs, too. I don't necessarily think my gluten intolerance will go away when I'm treated for whatever other problem I have since it's already triggered, like celiac would be, but it would be nice to think that I won't be as hyper-sensitive to it.

I think it can get rather complicated ... like figuring out a puzzle.

I feel so bad for that little girl ... no one believed me when I was little and sick either, but I was never taken to a psychiatrist ... that's why no one takes me seriously now.

Carla-

this is my situation too- I don't have celiac just gluten intolerance and I definitly think its been triggered by something else- i just still cannot seem to figure out what that something else is. I often wonder if I discover it what I will be able to handle. I could easily do without gluten at this point if I could just start to tolerate some other foods. I also can realte to that little girl so many people still give me so much stress about my weight - I eat all the time though. It seems like people are unwilling to believe you woulden;t want to be thin.

Tomorrow is my last regular day of work and then I start eating "bad" foods tomorrow night.....very sad. I am hoping that it won't be too bad....

what are the bad foods you have to eat

After breastfeeding five kids, I already had a shrinkage problem, but as I started losing weight, my own grandmother asked if I had a breast reduction!! Like I needed one???? I was never bigger than a C before! Now I joke that I look like a guy ... hubby assures me I don't. ;)

Laura, losing your period is natural when you lose so much weight. It will come back when you gain it back. Like I said, you look good .... actually GREAT!! People are usually surprised I want to gain weight, too ... it's so fashionable to be thin right now.

:(

People keep asking me WHAT I am eating and when I tell them that I am eating enough that I would have gained weight before, I know they don't believe me. When they stand back, look at me and say but you look really good I feel exhausted by the exchange. I know they don't get it. I am thinner than I want to be and I am afraid because I know that there is no way I should be thin given what I eat.

I've decided we need to differentiate between being sick and being ill. I think that if we understood being sick as having the flu or a cold with obvious symptoms that resolve quickly and being ill as no obvious symptoms but also no quick resolution of the symptoms, it would be easier for people to understand when we say we are ill. Does that make sense?

Truthfully, I am happy I have a disease that makes me thin rather than one that makes me obese ... if I had to choose, I would have chosen this ... if I had to choose a disease at all. It is a constant struggle for me to keep my weight on. I have to eat all the time, in fact I'm eating two pieces of gluten-free toast with coconut oil and almond butter on them. If I had eaten this before, I would have gained weight like crazy ... especially if it was at 9:30 at night after a full dinner!!! The bad thing is, I never have much of an appetite, but I do make myself eat. If I don't eat at night, I wake up with what I think is low blood sugar. I never used to appreciate my curves ... but I do now!! I used to gain weight sooo easily. You'll gain it back ... at least some of it.

You say you're down to 97. How tall are you?

Donna 90/55 ... that's what mine was last time it was checked.

@NanceK, I do have Hypersensitivity Type Four reaction to Sulfa drugs, a sulfa allergy.  Benfotiamine and other forms of Thiamine do not bother me at all.  There's sulfur in all kinds of Thiamine, yet our bodies must have it as an essential nutrient to make life sustaining enzymes.  The sulfur in thiamine is in a ring which does not trigger sulfa allergy like sulfites in a chain found in pharmaceuticals.  Doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition (nor chemistry in this case).  I studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I wanted to know what vitamins were doing inside the body.   Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Not feeling well after starting Benfotiamine is normal.  It's called the "thiamine paradox" and is equivalent to an engine backfiring if it's not been cranked up for a while.  Mine went away in about three days.  I took a B Complex, magnesium and added molybdenum for a few weeks. It's important to add a B Complex with all eight essential B vitamins. Supplementing just one B vitamin can cause lows in some of the others and result in feeling worse, too.  Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of all the B vitamins, not just thiamine.  You need all eight.  Thiamine forms including Benfotiamine interact with each of the other B vitamins in some way.  It's important to add a magnesium glycinate or chelate supplement as well.  Forms of Thiamine including Benfotiamine need magnesium to make those life sustaining enzymes.  (Don't use magnesium oxide.  It's not absorbed well.  It pulls water into the intestines and is used to relieve constipation.)   Molybdenum is a trace mineral that helps the body utilize forms of Thiamine.   Molybdenum supplements are available over the counter.  It's not unusual to be low in molybdenum if low in thiamine.   I do hope you will add the necessary supplements and try Benfotiamine again. Science-y Explanation of Thiamine Paradox: https://hormonesmatter.com/paradoxical-reactions-with-ttfd-the-glutathione-connection/#google_vignette

Your goal is not to be a good puppet, there is no gain in that. You might want to restart the ones that helped.  It sounds more like you are suffering from malnutrition.  Gluten free foods are not fortified with things like Thiamine (B1), vitamin D, Iodine, B1,2,3,5,6 and 12 as non-gluten free products are required to be. There is a Catch-22 here.  Malnutrition can cause SIBO, and SIBO can worsen malnutrition. Another possibility is side effects from any medication that are taking.  I was on Metformin 3 months before it turned me into a zombi.  I had crippling side effects from most of the BP meds tried on me, and Losartan has many of the side effects on me from my pre gluten free days. Because you have been gluten free, you can test and talk until you are blue in the face but all of your tests will be negative.  Without gluten, you will not create the antigen against gluten, no antigens to gluten, so no small intestine damage from the antigens.  You will need to do a gluten challange to test positive if you need an official diagnosis, and even then, no guaranty: 10 g of gluten per day for 6 weeks! Then a full panel of Celiac tests and biopsy. At a minimum consider vitamin D, Liquid Iodine (unless you have dermatitis herpetiformis and iodine exasperates the rash), and Liquid Geritol. Push for vitamin D testing and a consult with a nutritionist experienced with Celiack Disease.  Most blood tests don't indicate nutritional deficiencies.  Your thyroid tests can be perfect, yet not indicate iodine deficiency for example.  Thiamine   test fine, but not pick up on beriberi.  Vegans are often B12 deficient because meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy are the primary souces of B12. Here is what I take daily.  10,000 IU vitamin D3 750 mg g a b a [   ] 200 mg CoQ10 [   ] 100 mg DHEA [   ] 250 mg thiamine B1 [   ] 100 mg of B2 [   ] 500 mg B5 pantothenic acid [   ] 100 mg B6 [   ] 1000 micrograms B12 n [   ] 500 mg vitamin c [   ] 500 mg taurine [   ] 200 mg selenium

Hi…Just a note that if you have an allergy to sulfa it’s best not to take Benfotiamine. I bought a bottle and tried one without looking into it first and didn’t feel well.  I checked with my pharmacist and he said not to take it with a known sulfa allergy. I was really bummed because I thought it would help my energy level, but I was thankful I was given this info before taking more of it.
    • Wheatwacked
Hello @Scatterbrain, Are you getting enough vitamins and minerals.  Gluten free food is not fortified so you may be starting to run low on B vitamins and vitamin D.   By the way you should get your mom checked for celiac disease.  You got it from your mom or dad.  Some studies show that following a gluten-free diet can stabilize or improve symptoms of dementia.  I know that for the 63 years I was eating gluten I got dumber and dumber until I started GFD and vitamin replenishment and it began to reverse.  Thiamine can get used up in a week or two.  Symptoms can come and go with daily diet.  Symptoms of beriberi due to Thiamine deficiency.   Difficulty walking. Loss of feeling (sensation) in hands and feet. Loss of muscle function or paralysis of the lower legs. Mental confusion. Pain. Speech difficulties. Strange eye movements (nystagmus) Tingling. Any change in medications? Last March I had corotid artery surgery (90 % blockage), and I started taking Losartan for blood pressure, added to the Clonidine I was taking already.  I was not recovering well and many of my pre gluten free symptoms were back  I was getting worse.  At first I thought it was caused a reaction to the anesthesia from the surgery, but that should have improved after two weeks.  Doctor thought I was just being a wimp. After three months I talked to my doctor about a break from the Losartan to see if it was causing it. It had not made any difference in my bp.  Except for clonindine, all of the previous bp meds tried had not worked to lower bp and had crippling side effects. One, I could not stand up straight; one wobbly knees, another spayed feet.  Inguinal hernia from the Lisinopril cough.  Had I contiued on those, I was destined for a wheelchair or walker. She said the symptoms were not from Losartan so I continued taking it.  Two weeks later I did not have the strength in hips and thighs to get up from sitting on the floor (Help, I can't get up😨).  I stopped AMA (not recommended).  Without the Losartan, a) bp did not change, after the 72 hour withdrawal from Losartanon, on clonidine only and b) symptoms started going away.  Improvement started in 72 hours.  After six weeks they were gone and I am getting better.

Hopefully the food she eats away from home, especially at school, is 100% gluten-free. If you haven't checked in with the school directly about this, it might be worth a planned visit with their staff to make sure her food is safe.
