Poisoned At The Dentist?

Has anyone else had really weird reactions, as in feeling "poisoned" for a week after getting dental work done? Could it be from the novacaine, or whatever it is they numb you with? I had never been numbed at the dentist (as far as I can remember - no fillings or anything), so maybe it's normal, but I have felt SO WEIRD since I got some dental work done last week.

They also did impressions and took and impression of my bite line with this weird whip cream like substance, so god only knows what's in that stuff. I guess it could be gluten, but it really doesn't feel like that. I've had crazy brain fog, really intense night sweats (like I have to wake up and take a shower at 2:30 in the morning), shakiness, really dark urine even though I drink tons of water, dizziness, I keep dropping things, I just feel really blah in general. I mean it's not so bad that I can't function, it's just weird.

The only cause I can think of is the dentist. Does this happen to anyone else???? Or is this just a new form of glutening from whatever was in that nasty impression and whip creamy stuff????

I have had severe reactions to gluten after being in the dentist office. It leaves me sick for several days with "brain fog". The last time I had it I couldn't write out the check to pay for my visit and my husband had to almost carry me out of the office. I had been fine when I went in. The dentist said he had a few Celiac patients, but when he asked me if I ever had a problem with the topical anesthetic, I said No but a little bell went off in my head. Immediately after that I started to feel very weird. To make a long story short I found a new dentist who is working with me. he promised to never put any substance in my mouth which could harm me. I really appreciate him taking the time to call manufacturers to safeguard my well being. I no longer use the topical anesthetic, I just take the shot and I am fine. My advice to you is to read all the labels,

tell them to make your appt time a little longer and know what they are giving you. He also wrote about the dangers on my chart so no one can contaminate me. This also applies to the cleanings. Clan Thompson makes a little guide book on medications which do not contain gluten and they do include dental materials.

If you have any questions please PM me and I will try to help. Some people also blame the powder in the gloves, I'm not sure about that. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that does help. It just doesn't feel like a glutening. It feels like I'm being "poisoned" by something else, but who knows! Thanks for the response!

A lot of the stuff they use to clean your teeth contain milk, as well as medicines they might use to numb you or put you out. You should really tell the dentist that you can not have stuff containing gluten or dairy in your mouth or injected into you. If he doesn't get the picture tell him you've had life threatening reactions in the past. That will get him to really pay attention.

I haven't been to the dentist for a long time, but I could never handle any kind of anesthesia that they gave me. First of all they would have to give me so much because it wouldn't take and then when I would finally get numb I would be out. Afterwards I never felt 'right'. It would take me a couple weeks to get it out of my system.

IF your urine is dark, I would entertain the possibility of a UTI. It could also explain your feeling poorly in general. Your symptoms, or some of them, may be coincidental to what went on at the dentist.

One of my dentist's assistant has a celiac disease and they are very cautious - when I chatted with the dentist about my food issues, she immediatly checked the ingredients of what was going to go in my mouth to see if I could have it...I have been having my teeth fixed after avoiding the dentist for a loooonnnngggg time.

I agree. You should go to the doctor, my grandfather had dark urine and didn't go for a while, when he finally did they found out that his UTI had gotten so bad that his kidneys were starting to shut down. Go to the doctor now, you could get out with some antibiotics, or he could tell you that you are fine. It sure beats kidney failure.

Hmmm...I never thought of that, thanks for the advice.

That's exactly what happened to me. They kept giving me more and more anesthesia...they gave me soooo much it was ridiculous.

I had the same problems from the anesthesia....I felt weird and poisoned after they did all that to me too. I felt they were excessive with the numbing cream and shots. I remember after the first experience I had to go back and I told him straight up that I did NOT want any numbing. I would rather deal with the pain. I think he numbed me anyway. :(

That was about a month before my health went downhill.

Gosh, that's scary. It's weird becasue I just know that something at the dentist "poisoned" me. I don't know if I was neccessarily glutened or dairy'd...but it was something.

So...I had to get that dental work done last week because I'm getting four veneers put in my mouth (in about a week and a half). Should I be worried about what might be in the glue they use for those???? Will they even tell me if I ask?

Demand that they tell you or refuse to have it done. Only you know how your body feels!

I used to have reactions from the toothpaste they used at the Dentist. Now I just have them use plain pumice without flavorings or colorings and do fine. Karen

I have been glutened at the dentist before so now we check everything that he ever puts in my mouth.

I HATE the dentist! I was just there and I explained what happened to me the last time I was injected with that anesthetic stuff. She said she absolutely HAD to inject me with it again. Going without was not an option. She gave me a weaker version and then complained that she had to "tip toe" around my teeth because I would not let her numb me more.

Ugh...I know I shouldn't complain. I'm getting the veneers becasue I'm actually missing teeth, so it's not a totally cosmetic thing, but now I wish I had never gotten myself into this. The veneers were all chipped and they made me look like a horse, so they sent them back to the lab...which means I get to go in once more next week and get injected with that stuff again. But they said they can't do anything about the horse thing. They just have to be that way. B) My natural teeth are really little and the veneers are about four times bigger. Yay for pretty horse teeth.

I just had to vent <_< They did say they will print me out lists of all the ingredients in all of the things they put in my mouth or inject me with, so I guess that's good....

I'm glad they are doing that for you. It also helps with awareness. Enamel problems go with Celiacs. I didn't realize I needed to be gluten-free when I went - didn't think the numbness would ever go away. It would come and go for weeks. I had peridontal work. Then root canal. I kept getting infections. LindaLee

I guess I am really lucky, my dental hygentist has food intolerances and her daughter has gluten and soy intolerances so when I ask what they use, she tells me exactly - and when I asked my dentist about stuff she was putting in/on, she immediatly read the ingredients and asked if all of them were OK to use or not.

Boy can I sympathize. You need to insist that they not just print out the list but that they take the time to check it before you go back. I trusted my dentist and still continued to get sick. I later found out all they did was write celiac in my chart and did not bother to check anything. Make them put it in writing. If they won't I would take my veneers in a box and have another celiac savvy dentist put them on.

I also have the dentist use the plain pumice with no flavoring to clean my teeth. I've never had anything other than a cleaning so I can't help you there.

Dear Mango: I have celiac disease and sjogrens syndrome. Because of this I go to the dentist very regularly. I have a personal relationship with my office and have paid for my dentists son's college education. Not that I mind because I love her. BUT, I understand where you're coming from. The first thing you have to do is find a good dentist that is not going to complain about your ailments and tip-toing around your mouth. Your hiring and paying her for goodness sake. I have a reaction to epinephrin in the novicain so I have it without the epi. This helps as I no longer have rapid heart palpatation now, only from anxiety not introduced meds. I have had many crowns because of my deteriorating teeth. My teeth are literally melting away because of the lack of saliva. I don't know what I would do if I didn't trust my dentist. I wouldn't let your dentist come near me with a ten foot pole. He should be doing as much research as necessary to find the answer to your problems and finding the alternative if available for your impressions, injections, etc. I know it is a bother but that's what you pay him for. I hope this helps. :D

That does help. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has issues with this. I hate being in a situation where I'm not in control of what's being injected into me. It's a really frustrating feeling...

Mango, when I got all of my mercury fillings out I went to a special kind of dentist. I can't remember what exactly his title was, it's been some time, but he was very very cautious and knowledgeable about allergies/sensitivities and auto-immune conditions. He tested substances with kiniseology before using anything that went into or around my mouth, and especially the replacement fillings.

Maybe you could find this kind of dentist in your neck of the woods.

      how much gluten do I need to eat before blood tests?

      I am on day 13 of eating gluten and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone...

Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

      I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this.Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
