If I have been gluten-free for 2 1/2 years, what numbers should my anti-glidian (sp) numbers be? They retested because my neuro problems are kind of getting worse and I am wondering if I have been lax in the gluten-free

I believe that the results would be negative for antigliadin after gluten-free for that long.

B12 deficiency is common in older persons and those with autoimmune disorders of any kind. You get neuropathy from low B12, also can be klutzy, and very tired

Other things can cause the anti-gliadin to be high, that's why they no longer recommend it as one of the tests. If they do the whole panel, I think that the numbers should be negative, or very very low - but keep in mind that some completely normal people can have antibodies that are a little bit high.

They are redoing the whole panel as the office staff did not know how to take just the one test out for the lab orders.

My B12 is fine. I get checked every 3 months for that, D and all the other vitamins.

When I got diagnosed with gluten ataxia, I was told that staying gluten free would prevent it from getting any worse. Or that is what I thought the doctor said LOL. The problem is that I am having a lot of brain type problems and that is why the retesting. Maybe, I think I am totally gluten-free, but I might have become lax and am getting some still in my body. Hopefully the test will be negative. But, my question was what the numbers should be if I have been gluten-free for 2 1/2 years? I think over 10 means you have Celiac, but if no gluten is SUPPOSE to be getting into your body, would the number be 0?

Can the anit-gliadin numbers be high from eating other gliadin containing grains? I'm not an expert on any of this but I know for me I react to other grains in a lot of the gluten-free foods, like amaranth, in the same way I do wheat. Just a thought.

I don't know the specifics of gluten antibodies, but antibodies in general can cross react. So some similar protein might cause a small rise in your antigliadin antibodies, or your particular antibody spectrum might have something that causes the ELISA to give a slight false positive. So when I do an ELISA, I count everything that is less than my lowest standard, but a little bit above background as a negative result. This doesn't mean I call it 0, it's just below the level of detection. (Actually I usually give it a number because 0s are hard to use in calculations).

So Miss Mouse, Your numbers probably won't be 0, but if your lab tells you that anything less than 10 is negative, and you have a 9, assume that means it's negative. But for your own peace of mind you could do a run through your kitchen and double check everything. At least you'd feel proactive and I think staying in control of your life always feels good.

Annie seems to always feel fabulous - - she did have giardia for a while, but never lets anything get her down. I've had her 3.5 years, she has not lagged a day in her perky little life, and has not failed to lift my spirits in her joy and devotion to me (she's like a therapy dog, senses everything and never leaves my side).....it's like sunshine resides within this dog. Even while sick, she would have the energy to trample a painting.... :lol:

Anywho thanks all for giving me hugs for my whining over painting.....I am just grieving its damage and cursing my stupidity! :angry: but am happy in knowing that I think I want to paint again.....no specimens at this time but something will show itself soon, somewhere....maybe I'll get back into the very bright, Neo-Fauve oils again.......

I, too am wondering if skunk smell came out of dress! what a debacle -

Alas I will never know - I worked at an emergency clinic then...the call came in at 8pm on a Friday (skunks come out in early evening). The wedding was the next day.... at my end I picked up the phone and all I could hear was loud voices yellling - GET HIM OUT! Then someone explained what happened. I told them to open windows, air out the dress and short of that - there is nothing they could do. No all night drycleaners around :o

I felt bad for the bride - can you imagine - even with airing it out, there would be faint odour that would have people asking "What's that smell?"... :huh:

I have all sorts of stories that make me chuckle at the trouble pets get themselves into.

One male dog learned that at minus 30, you should not pee against a chain link fence - -yes he got too close and his privates got stuck to the metal :o:blink: - he spent 2 days in clinic, catheterized, on anti inflammatories and pain control.

Another dog came in with fairly bad concussion. We think owner is just upset when he says - "she ran into a car". So I say "how long ago was she hit, did the wheel go over her at all?".... Owner pauses, then looks at his dog and says: "No, umm, the car was parked, I was bike riding with her and she ran full tilt into the car". :huh: ..apparently distracted by a cat.....

both animals recovered completely, i felt soooo bad for the little guy and his fence incident - that HAD to hurt so bad

Me too Julie.

I didn't test intolerant to millet, amaranth or quinoa....but if I have a lot of millet bread (like with french toast), I have a reaction. I did test moderately intolerant to gliadin as well as gluten though.

I am quite sure that is the last we are seeing of the vet. And McDreamy - he IS going to break Meredith's heart....again........ :angry:

Can the anit-gliadin numbers be high from eating other gliadin containing grains?

I had been told that my IgG will always be elevated, even after being gluten-free for extended periods--but it shouldn't be through the roof like when you're eating gluten. I was also told that my thyroid antibodies will always be elevated, even though my Hashimoto's is supposedly under control with Synthroid.

At any rate, that's what I'd been told--whether or not that is accurate, I couldn't tell you! Anybody know more details?

I've found that dogs have very expressive faces!!

Silly.....serious questiosn are fine. we are all in this together.

Prozac - I was on it two different times, for not more than one week each - - was literally crawling out of my skin and thought I might die, or at least kill many people before I did :o ......BUT BUT BUT - - you must know that all drugs affect people VERY differently. I have been on other SSRI's and had no reaction of that sort at all. It is trial and error - - I know or have known many people who've been on prozac and it worked quite well, in fact I' ve not known any other person who reacted the way I did to prozac.

don't be robbed of your joy, Cecile.....try the Prozac, if it works, HOORAY, you may only need to be on it for a while, or forever, who cares, and it if doesn't work, try something else......

WHY AM I SO HUNGRY ALL THE TIME NOW???????????? :angry::angry::angry:

Hi Cecile, my experience with Prozac wasn't too good.

Apparently I had a rare reaction ( :rolleyes: trust me!) where I broke out in spots and it seemed to affect my fine motor skills amongst other things.

Having said that- to echo Susan, it is different horses for different courses.

In the past it's helped my hubby immensly and I know of many people who sing it's praises where it's really helped. :)

Thanks you guys... I've reacted to many different anti-depressants but never tried this... don't know if I'll bring it up to the doctor or not.... just trying to hear everyone's stories.

I've not taken it myself, but a good friend's daughter has. She has been on it for several years now--starting when she was about 18. The only problem I know of was when she tried to wean off of it--that was pretty difficult, and she ended up just staying on it.

I had prozac once and I almost jumped off a bridge, which is something for someone who is afraid of heights. It made me very suicidal but then I don't react to drugs the way most people would.

I didn't have a good experience with prozac, but it's been years since then. I just felt really hyper. Can you get samples of the Lexapro from your doctor? I used to ask for samples of Allegro because it was so expensive. That worked for a few months then they told me to get my prescription filled :blink::blink::blink:

Our Walmart has been advertising that they are cutting the costs on hundreds of meds. Maybe Lexipro is one. You might call your Walmart and see. The price slashing is suppose to be a big one.

Well, thank God! What a relief! I thought you were depressed, you silly girl; didn't know you were thinking about your bones!

Fosamax is what I take for osteoporosis, plus vitamin D. I've never heard that prozac could help; must be something new.

I won't yell at you about cutting the lexapro dose in half, considering the circumstances. Maybe you could get it cheaper in Canada. I don't know how that works, but I assume it isn't too difficult a process, since a lot of people do it.

      Scott, I am mostly asymptomatic. I was diagnosed based on high antibodies, low ferritin (3) and low vitamin D (10). I wasn't able to get in for the biopsy until 3 months after the blood test came back. I was supposed to keep eating gluten during this time. Well why would I continue doing something that I know to be harmful for 3 more months to just get...

      I was undiagnosed for decades. My ferritin when checked in 2003 was 3. It never went above 10 in the next 20 years. I was just told to "take iron". I finally requested the TTgIgA test in 2023 when I was well and truly done with the chronic fatigue and feeling awful. My numbers were off the charts on the whole panel. they offered me an endoscopic biopsy ...

I actually looked up true/false negative/positive as it pertains to testing. The term "false negative" would be correct if you are positive (have anti-bodies) and the test did not pick them up. That would be a problem with the "test...

      I realized it is actually important to get an official diagnosis because then insurance can cover bone density testing and other lab work to see if any further damage has been done because of it. Also, if hospitalized for whatever reason, I have the right to gluten-free food if I am officially celiac. I guess it gives me some legal protections. Plus, I have...

      Scott, I am mostly asymptomatic. I was diagnosed based on high antibodies, low ferritin (3) and low vitamin D (10). I wasn't able to get in for the biopsy until 3 months after the blood test came back. I was supposed to keep eating gluten during this time. Well why would I continue doing something that I know to be harmful for 3 more months to just get this test? So I did quit gluten and had the biopsy. It was negative for celiacs. I continued gluten free with iron supps and my ferritin came back up to a reasonable, but not great level of around 30-35.  Could there be something else going on? Is there any reason why my antibodies would be high (>80) with a negative biopsy? could me intestines have healed that quickly (3 months)?  I'm having a hard time staying gluten free because I am asymptomatic and i'm wondering about that biopsy. I do have the celiacs gene, and all of the antibody tests have always come back high. I recently had them tested again. Still very high. I am gluten free mostly, but not totally. I will occasionally eat something with gluten, but try to keep to a minimum. It's really hard when the immediate consequences are nil.  with high antibodies, the gene, but a negative biopsy (after 3 months strict gluten-free), do i really have celiacs? please say no. lol. i think i know the answer.  Asa

Why else would my TTgIgA be so high if not celiacs? Anyway, your ferritin will rise as your intestine heals and take HEME iron (brand 4 arrows). I took 20mg of this with vitamin c and lactoferrin and my ferritin went up, now sits around 35.  you will feel dramatically better getting your ferritin up, and you can do it orally with the right supplements. I wouldn't get an infusion, you will get as good or better results taking heme iron/vc/lf.

That would be a problem with the "test" itself. If you were gluten-free and got tested, you more than likely would test "true" negative or just negative. This means that the gluten-free diet is working and no anti-bodies should be present. I know it sounds confusing and if you don't agree feel free to respond.

If I really do have it then they may have increased risk.
