My mother and I watched it together and we both cracked up when they showed the family eating those sad, flat little cupcakes! I remember baking things that looked like that. :lol: Someone send that woman some gluten-free baking mix, stat!

The CBS News Story was AWESOME!!!!!!!! My prayers were answered!!! Finally, my friends and family don't think I'm nuts!! I had chills up my spine and tears rolling down my cheeks. It was serile. My sons results haven't come back from Enterolab yet, but he has responded to the gluten free diet. He had terrible stomach aches, vomitting, acid reflux, horrible mouth sores, and it was starting to affect him mentally. He couldn't go to sleep at night and nightly woke up with terrible stomach pains and sometimes vomitting. We have been doctoring for 6 months with us, which I know is short in comparison to some people's stories. Thank God I had access to a person who has family members who are gluten intolerant and access to tons of great info on the internet including this site!! Going gluten free was our last resort. The medical community has laughed in my face, basically telling me I'm crazy. I am concvinced I know more about it than any doctor in this area. The first dr. ordered the wrong test and the second ordered the right one when my son had already been gluten free for a month. No one understands the terrible alone, abandoned feeling unless you've gone through it. Thank God for the news story. Now people can see it's not just kids who are withering away that suffer from this. The mother basically diagnosed the daughter and she was CLASSIC Celiac. All I can say is I hope the right people were watching!! The doctors!!! I am so thrilled and have been in a depression over this for the last week. I am so happy!!! Let's try for Oprah now!!!! I have emailed her on this topic and I think there is power in numbers!! :)

I sat here with my hubby watching it. I thought it was great. I only hope that people I know were also watching. I forgot about the newbie aspect of the broadcast LOL. Almost 4 minutes in prime time is awesome.

I watched it with my mom and her hubby....I thought it would be longer but I thought it was very good regardless. I was hoping my moms hubby was paying attention because I think he might have Celiac. I was happy with the info they provided ...mostly the fact they pointed out that its common, that 95% arent diagnosed and that symptoms can vary. I think alot of people might get themselves diagnosed just from seeing a short segment like that.

I agree. The fact that the medical correspondent specifically stated that it's no longer looked at as a disease specifically related to horrific gi symptoms was clutch! I loved the fact that they listed associated symptoms that weren't specific to gi problems. I thought it was great that they mentioned neurological symptoms and reccurent miscarriages.

Glad I got on this thread tonight and read about the CBS celiac story, that was great to have on National TV!!

I did not see it because I was so tired after dental work today that I went to sleep during that time. Do not want to say I nap because of being older, I blame it onto being Celiac. HA-HA Such 'Good' publicity for "Celiac disease". Am I a newbie on here? Evening all!! evie

Actually, surprisingly enough, there are gluten free stores. A family opened one in Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes from my parents house. Everything in their store is gluten free---they opened it because people in their family were diagnosed with Celiac. There is one in Virginia Beach, and he carries probably 90% gluten free stuff (independently owned, and his family has two people with Celiac).

So, stranger things have happened :)

Hi Laura, Where are the stores located? I think there is a health food store close to Cbn - is that it?

Also I will be going to Pa. later this month. Where is that one located? Thanks :)

I sit corrected. I've never seen a whole store, but certainly sections. In fact the health food store kindly labels celiac friendly stuff with a red dot sticker and the words "celiac ok". I wonder where the story originated.

For everyone who couldn't get the video to play I had to click a litte circle next to the file type I wanted to play. There was a commercial first. <_<

There was a store in my area that was all gluten free. It was amazing!! Unfortunately it recently closed down. :(

OK, I finally got to watch it. Maybe shutting down my computer last night helped. I thought it was a good piece. I emailed my mom the video link. She's on vacation and I doubt she would have seen it.

We have a gluten free store in Vancouver WA called Lingonberries.

      I know what you mean. When I get glutened I have severe gut cramps and throw up for 2-3 hr. and then have diarrhea for another several hours. Avoid eating out if at all possible.       Gluten Free Coffee

      Okay went online to check green mountain k cups .It was said that the regular coffees are fine but they couldn’t guarantee cross contamination.with the flavors. im trying to figure out since I eliminated the suyrup so far so good. I’m hoping. thanks it feels good to listen to other people there views.

      Welcome to the forum, @McKinleyWY, For a genetic test, you don't have to eat gluten, but this will only show if you have the genes necessary for the development of Celiac disease.  It will not show if you have active Celiac disease.   Eating gluten stimulates the production of antibodies against gluten which mistakenly attack our own bodies.  The antibodies are produced in the small intestines.  Three grams of gluten are enough to make you feel sick and ramp up anti-gluten antibody production and inflammation for two years afterwards.  However, TEN grams of gluten or more per day for two weeks is required to stimulate anti-gluten antibodies' production enough so that the anti-gluten antibodies move out of the intestines and into the bloodstream where they can be measured in blood tests.  This level of anti-gluten antibodies also causes measurable damage to the lining of the intestines as seen on biopsy samples taken during an endoscopy (the "gold standard" of Celiac diagnosis).   Since you have been experimenting with whole wheat bread in the past year or so, possibly getting cross contaminated in a mixed household, and your immune system is still so sensitized to gluten consumption, you may want to go ahead with the gluten challenge.   It can take two years absolutely gluten free for the immune system to quit reacting to gluten exposure.   Avoiding gluten most if the time, but then experimenting with whole wheat bread is a great way to keep your body in a state of inflammation and illness.  A diagnosis would help you stop playing Russian roulette with your and your children's health.

This applies to both phases of testing, the blood antibody tests and the endoscopy with biopsy.  There is the option of genetic testing to see if you have one or both of the two genes known to provide the potential to develop celiac disease. It is not really a diagnostic measure, however, as 30-40% of the general population has one or both of these genes whereas only about 1% of the general population actually develops celiac disease. But genetic testing is valuable as a rule out measure. If you don't have either of the genes, it is highly unlikely that you can have celiac disease. Having said all that, even if you don't have celiac disease you can have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms as celiac disease but does not involve and autoimmune reaction that damages the lining of the small bowel as does celiac disease. Both conditions call for the complete elimination of gluten from the diet. I hope this brings some clarity to your questions.

      Hello all, I was diagnosed at the age of 2 as being allergic to yeast.  All my life I have avoided bread and most products containing enriched flour as they  contain yeast (when making the man made vitamins to add back in to the flour).  Within the last year or so, we discovered that even whole wheat products bother me but strangely enough I can eat gluten free bread with yeast and have no reactions.  Obviously, we have come to believe the issue is gluten not yeast.  Times continues to reinforce this as we are transitioning to a gluten free home and family.  I become quite ill when I consume even the smallest amount of gluten. How will my not having consumed breads/yeast/gluten for the better part of decades impact a biopsy or blood work?  I would love to know if it is a gluten intolerance or a genetic issue for family members but unsure of the results given my history of limited gluten intake.   I appreciate the input from those who have gone before me in experience and knowledge. Thank you all!

When you are forced to eat out at a new restaurant that you are not sure is safe, try to order things that you can be sure will not get cross contaminated like a boiled egg, baked potatos, steamed vegies, fresh fruit. Yes, I know that doesn't sound as appetizing as pizza or a burger and fries but your health is at stake. I also realize that as a 14 year old you don't have a lot of control over where you eat out because you are tagging along with others or adults are paying for it. Do you have support from your parents concerning your need to eat gluten free? Do you believe they have a good understanding of the many places gluten can show up in the food supply?
