Oprah did another one of her shows where she talks about poop and stuff with doctors. The one doctor (can't remember his name....is it Dr. Oz?) was talking about food "allergies" and mentioned lactose intolerance and wheat allergies as possible problems for one of the guests. I don't know if he meant gluten intolerance when he mentioned wheat, but he sure didn't say that. I think the guest said she was having diarrhea all the time that started with one of her pregnancies (I was in the kitchen when they first started talking). I kept thinking "say gluten intolerance....say gluten intolerance", but he didn't mention it :(.

With all of these poop shows Oprah does, you would think one of the doctors would mention gluten intolerance ;). Watching one of Oprah's "poop" shows was was first made me think something was wrong with me. The doctor was talking about what a BM should look like and I knew that mine must not be normal.

Hi, I was actually just watching it and the woman said every time she ate she got diarrea and that she needs to load up her purse with Imodium just to go out to dinner. I was ready to scream at the TV "GLUTEN INTOLERANCE". But you are right it was not mentioned. He did say that it could be a food allergy and mentioned specifically lactose and wheat. I feel like writing to Oprah and having her tell that girl to get tested :P .

wow, I was just thinking the exact same thing!! If Oprah can do a show on poop, can't she do a show on food allergies, including celiac??

It's Dr. Mehmet Oz - I bought his book last year, before celiac dx....it makes me SO mad! Dr. Oz is the one to whom we should direct our letter campaigns, I think. Evidently we've all barraged Oprah with emails (I just sent another last week!) and she ignores us....so maybe we should target this doctor, as she listens to him.

I agree, but in a positive, questioning way. In his book (which is really good btw) he talks a lot about constipation, and what to do about it, but not much about what to do if you go the other way. And I was really looking for that info. I had thought about writing and asking "but what if you have to go 4 times in the morning within 1/2 an hour? Is that normal?" And I don't have Celiac tummy issues!

I actually have the show on now. When the woman with chronic D, purse full of Immodium, and has to constantly find a bathroom where ever she is said that it started with her last pregnancy--I was SURE he was gonna suggest Celiac or gluten intolerance as a possibility--but no! He mentioned lactose or wheat and that was it. It was the perfect opportunity to at least suggest the possibility and alert people to the symptoms of Celiac. Gr-r-r

He did say that a pregnancy or viral illness can cause a change in a person's immune system, but didn't do any further with it.

I know, its soo frustrating when you just know someone has it. Either their on t.v. talking about it, and your pacing the floors, or its a relative who says oh, I don't have diareah though....ugh....how long is it going to take for this crap ( no pun intended ) to be recognized!

I am watching too and was going to get on here to see if anyone else saw it and you all beat me to it! I thought for sure he was going to mention celiac or gluten intolerance. She sounds classic! That would have really been nice if he would have mentioned it on there. So many people watch her show and especially when he's on.

jerseyangel Proficient

I *know*! It's not like I expect him to diagnose her on the spot :D But, a mention, considering her symptoms would have been nice. One word on that show would go a long way toward awareness! ;)

Oprah acted like she didn't know what probiotics are. She is not up on our digestion process. Perhaps contacting the dr. would be the best bet for a show. He was skipping all over today-not a concentrated segement.

I also watched (or listened rather) to Oprah today while working on a project in the kitchen. I could not believe that poor lady with the *D* after having the baby....um, yeah she needs to get tested for Celiac - STAT! Here is what I'm going to do as mentioned above. I'm going to e-mail the Oprah show, yet again, and I'm not even going to mention her doing a show on Celiac. I'm going to say I'm praying she gets in touch with that woman from today and suggests she get tested for Celiac because there is a high probability she has it (birth being the trigger) and we clearly should not assume Oprah would know this, since as stated above, she's never heard of probiotics. Next, as stated above also, it is Dr. Oz's fault that he didn't bring up Celiac or gluten intolerance. Surely he's more informed than the average US doc about the condition. In any case, if anyone knows how to e-mail him, please post this. This guy has been on Oprah a lot and he may be able to get her to do a show if we appeal to him. He seems to enjoy the media spotlight. So to him, my suggestion is that we be really nice and say how concerned we are about that lady on today's show. Good luck to everyone who takes the time to write Oprah and/or Dr. Oz!

p.s. Dr. Mehmet Oz practices at Columbia (so does Dr. Green) so I find it hard to believe he is uninformed about Celiac but anything is possible. I just e-mailed him at info@columbiasurgery.org and his phone # is 212-305-4434. Maybe we just pester the heck out of him for a while. Unlike Oprah, he probably doesn't have tons of people to read his e-mail for him so maybe he'd at least get back to one of us eventually, even to say to leave him alone. It's worth a try in my opinion.

I watched too and couldn't believe the advice that was given, or not given rather. It was basically, having d is normal when dealing with some kinds of foods.

Unrelated to celiac, I was thinking he should have suggested the PE teacher that had so much bacterial sweat be checked out by a doctor to make sure he didnt have something medical going on  .

Ruth52 Newbie

Being from Australia I haven't seen the Oprah show you are talking about but I wonder if his failure to mention 'Celiac' was intentional.

Often I think some doctors, especially ones who are making a 'public' name for themselves, have their own hidden agenda. I don't know what his would be, but I can't understand a supposedly well informed dr. who is trying to make a name for himself on television, not knowing about Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance.

Possibly by not mentioning a specific disease he is protecting himself from making a misdiagnosis on national television. Just a thought.

Oprah needs to do a show on Celiac/ Gluten Intolerance. I've emailed her. Everyone email her!! There's power in numbers!!!

I agree, I was waiting, waiting, waiting, I wanted to scream at her, get tested it could save her so much grief

i would just like to say that, prinsessa, you saying "poop shows" over and over again about made me fall off my chair i was laughing so hard. thanks for a good giggle...i needed one today :)

I saw it too. I'm glad he said wheat was a common allergen. Something at least.

I did e-mail him tho. Anyone know how I can write to oprah? I can't see her website as I'm on a sidekick (like a cell phone thing) not a computer (I don't have a computer). Thanks. I feel so bad for that woman, she's out there tonight, still suffering, still undiagnosed. Arg.

 Well that is what they are! It is kind of strange to hear people talking about poop on national tv. I think it is a good thing they are talking about it though. If people aren't having normal bms then something else is going on. Many people don't know what a normal bm is though.

I agree that we should try to contact Dr. Oz. He will probably listen to us better than Oprah would. It makes me sad that 95% of people with gluten intolerance don't even know it. I couldn't imagine going through my whole life feeling sick and not knowing what is wrong. If it wasn't for doing my own research, I still wouldn't know what was wrong.

I agree with all the comments that have been posted above. I was watching the show and was so hopeful he would mention Celiac. I emailed Oprah's show the next day and asked if there was anyway they could get back in touch with that lady to have her get tested for Celiac. I described all the Celiac symptoms and that I was diagnosed with Celiac after a long time of symptoms just like this lady's symptoms. We can only hope!

Hi,

For anyone with XM radio, Dr. Mehmet Oz has a program on Oprah and Friends. This may be a good start to opening a discussion. They're always looking for callers. Even though Dr. Oz is a cardiologist he'd have access to Dr. Green, who would probably love to promote his new book on his show.

Why don't we all e-mail Dr. Oz at :Open Original Shared Link

and request a show, or several shows about gluten intolerance and hopefully get Dr. Green a show on Oprah in the near future.

Just a thought.

Is there a law here that you can't do both? Sorry, I'm new here and don't want to upset the cart.

I'm of the opinion that you need to educate a physican who may have a microphone- no matter how small the audience. I'll bet Dr. Oz has more physicians listening to his show on XM radio than Oprah has watching her show.

Any publicity would be good.

Rikki Tikki Explorer

I think she's just stating that we have been trying to get Oprah to do a show for quite some time. I don't think she was telling you not to do it.

I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.
    • xxnonamexx
Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks
    • knitty kitty
Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
    • xxnonamexx
I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.
