Celiac Belly Part 2: What Kind Of Jeans Do You Wear?

Even when I don' t have the celiac belly, my stomach still gets bigger all day long. It's an entire size smaller when I wake up in the morning. As a result, my jeans seem to stretch out a lot between washings, and then they don't hold in the tummy as well. I can't be the only one with this problem. I have no idea what jeans look good on me. I either have way too much fabric, or they are tight in the wrong places. Any advice?

I am a big fan of Ann Taylor. They work for me.

I was so happy when low waisted jeans came into style. I couldn't handle anything tight around my waist. This way my waist can do what it wants in terms of expanding and contracting and the jeans still fit. Just be sure to have a long loose top.

Joe's Jeans. They're amazing. They have just enough give, and they don't over stretch. When I wash and dry them, they shrink back up, too. They're a bit on the pricey side, so I usually buy mine at Nordstrom Rack, where they can usually be found on sale for $100 a pair, as opposed to their higher retail prices. I've heard they can be found at TJ Maxx, too.

I'd probably avoid Express or True Religion, as both brands stretch out a LOT. Express employees usually tell their clients to go down a size, as it will stretch. I've found this to be mostly true, with the exception of one pair of skinnies I bought last summer. I gained a bit of weight over the summer, and all my other jeans stretched to accommodate, but this pair just won't budge. They're uncomfortable, so I don't ever wear them enough to break them in. It was kind of strange, as every other pair I've had from them has gotten bigger with time.

Also, True Religions have crazy stretch. They start off one size in the morning, and by the end of the day, they're at least a size too loose. I've found that over time though, this has evened out a bit and they stay closer to their original size... no idea why.

Seven's are probably another good brand to try. I love mine to death. As with the Joe's, they do have some give, but they don't over stretch. They're very comfortable and never end up looking baggy. I work at Nordstrom, and the people I work with generally recommend going with the snugger size for this brand because over time they'll break in.

Erg. I sound like a jean snob.... and I suppose that's probably true.

Not Your Daughter's Jeans. They have a tummy panel hidden inside, are soft and comfortable, and truly make you look a size smaller.

Not cheap, but worth it ;)

Its all about low waisted and stretch. I wear Lucky's and some Old Navy jeans. I have a hard time cause I'm short with relatively thin legs but I have a booty. Most designer jeans aren't made for my body type. I do wear jeans that are a tad bit loose and then wear a belt cause then I can adjust as the day goes on.

Im with elonwy...low waste and stretch. Perfect. Im short too. I like the slight flare leg. It is flattering on me.

Citizens Of Humanity Jeans too. I found a miracle pair--dark wash, super long, perfect fit--at the Nordstrom 1/2 yearly sale for 50% off. They have just enough give, don't stretch thru the day, no muffin top and they're sooo soft!

I wear mid rise (2-3" below my navel) and any jeans with spandex (stretch). After years of trying to fit the 'tummy' and having jeans that bagged in the legs (esp. the hips and thighs because I have straight hips and 'no saddlebags'), I found Express's Mia style jeans. They fit snug in the hips and thighs. Those jeans are supposed to be 'high waist', but they fit me like a mid rise. However I also altered all my old baggy (in the hips and thighs) jeans to make them skinny jeans. I'm glad I can use a sewing machine and serger to make my old jeans fit even better than new.

Citizens are by the same designers that started Seven, so people who like one brand tend to like the other brand, too. Sales are the best time to get designers, though, for sure. Even though I get a discount, I still wait until what I want is on sale or at the Rack... it's just not worth it to pay *that much* for jeans!

elonwy, I beg to differ... I've seen all kinds/shapes of people fit into the designer stuff. Most designer jeans are made too long to begin with, but the point is so that they can be hemmed to the right length as needed. I'm tall and thin and *still* need to have most of my jeans hemmed up, haha. I'm no expert (I work in a department that doesn't sell jeans), but I've seen a lot of different body types fitted successfully. I know at least at Nordy's, they do the hems for free, and other alterations for a fee. If you can find a good salesperson to help, they can generally find stuff that will work with your own body type.

Frankly, I hated Old Navy jeans. They stretched out on me too much. I remember buying 3 or so pairs a couple winters ago, since they were about $30 a pair. 6 months later, I tossed them all out because they hard warped and stretched so much that they fabric was puckered and baggy. I haven't tried them since then. I feel like the designers I've bought really have held up a lot longer.

I have to use a belt. I have no butt left and if the jeans slip below the gut line, they will be around my ankles in now time.

Hi and thank you very much for your detailed response! I am so glad that the protocol worked so well for you and helped you to get your health back on track. I've heard of it helping other people too. One question I have is how did you maintain your weight on this diet? I really rely on nuts and rice to keep me at a steady weight because I tend to lose weight quickly and am having a hard time envisioning how to make it work, especially when not being able to eat things like nuts and avocados. In case you have any input, woud be great to hear it! Friendly greetings.

I was not taking any medications previous to this. I was a healthy 49 yo with some mild stomach discomfort. I noticed the onset of tinnitus earlier this year and I had Covid at the end of June. My first ‘flare-up’ with these symptoms was in August and I was eating gluten like normal. I had another flare-up in September and then got an upper endo at the end of September that showed possible celiac. My blood test came a week later. While I didn’t stop eating gluten before I had the blood test, I had cut back on food and gluten both. I had a flare-up with this symptoms after one week of gluten free but wasn’t being crazy careful. Then I had another flare-up this week. I think it might have been caused by Trader Joe’s baked tofu which I didn’t realize had wheat. But I don’t know if these flare-ups are caused by gluten or if there’s something else going on. I am food journaling and tracking all symptoms. I have lost 7 pounds in the last 10 days.

Welcome to the forum, @Hmart! There are other medical conditions besides celiac disease that can cause villous atrophy as well as some medications and for some people, the dairy protein casein. So, your question is a valid one. Especially in view of the fact that your antibody testing was negative, though there are also some seronegative celiacs. So, do you get reactions every time you consume gluten? If you were to purposely consume a slice of bread would you be certain to develop the symptoms you describe?

I only went on the multi vitamin AFTER a couple of year of high dose, targeted supplementation resolved most of my deficiencies.  I was on quite a cocktail of vitamins that was changed every 6 months as my deficiencies resolved.  Those that were determined to be genetic are still addressed with specific doses of those vitamins, minerals and amino acids. I have an update on my husband and his A Fib.  He ended up in the hospital in August 2025 when his A Fib would not convert.  He took the maximum dose of Flecainide allowed within a 24 hour period.  It was a nightmare experience!  They took him into the ER immediately.  They put in a line, drew blood, did an EKG and chest Xray all within minutes.  Never saw another human for 6 hours.  Never got any results, but obviously we could see he was still in A fib by watching the monitor.  They have the family sign up for text alerts at the ER desk.  So glad I did.  That is the only way we found out that he was being admitted.  About an hour after that text someone came to take him to his room on an observation floor.  We were there two hours before we saw another human being and believe it or not that was by zoom on the TV in the room.  It was admissions wanting to know his vaccine status and confirming his insurance, which we provided at the ER desk.  They said someone would be in and finally a nurse arrived.  He was told a hospitalist was in charge of his case.  Finally the NP for the hospitalist showed up and my husband literally blew his stack.  He got so angry and yelled at this poor woman, but it was exactly what he needed to convert himself to sinus rhythm while she was there.  They got an EKG machine and confirmed it.  She told him that they wanted to keep him overnight and would do an echo in the morning and they were concerned about a wound on his leg and wanted to do a doppler to make sure he did not have a DVT.  He agreed.  The echo showed everything fine, just as it was at his annual check up in June and there was no DVT.  A cardiologist finally showed up to discharge him and after reviewing his history said the A Fib was due to the Amoxicillan prescribed for his leg wound.  It both triggers A Fib and prevents the Flecainide from working.  His conversion coincided with the last dose of antibiotic getting out of his system.  So, make sure your PCP understands what antibiotics you can or cannot take if susceptible to A Fib.  This cardiologist (not his regular) wanted him on Metoprolol 25 mg and Pradaxa.  My husband told him that his cardiologist axed the idea of a beta blocker because his heart rate is already low.  Sure enough, it dropped to 42 on the Metoprolol and my husband felt horrible.  The pradaxa gave him a full body rash!  He went back to his cardiologist for follow up and his BP was fine and heart rate in the mid 50's.  He also axed the Pradaxa since my husband has low platelets, bruises easily and gets bloody noses just from Fish Oil  He suggested he take Black Cumin Seed Oil for inflammation.  He discovered that by taking the Black Seed oil, he can eat carbs and not go into A Fib, since it does such a good job of reducing inflammation.   Oh and I forgot to say the hospital bill was over $26,000.  Houston Methodist!
