Yep. And head, shoulder, joint, muscle, eye, tmj, and every other conceivable place pain. Evil Evil gluten.

My hip pain is particularly bad at night. So much so, that when I have a flair-up, I have to get out of bed extra early just to deal with the pain.

In the past the pain would come and go. In retrospect, I see that my worse problems might have been when eating gluten without knowing I was gluten-intolorant.

I did a many-week gluten challenge and oh my gosh, the symptoms!

I have only been gluten free for a few weeks, and I am praying that the hip and lower back pain will once again get better.

I also pray I'll be able to lose the 15 pounds that came on during the challenge. The first couple days I dropped some weight but have been stuck since. I think it is taking my body more time to adjust than I thought it would. The extra weight cannot help my pain, that's for sure. So maybe it is a combination of both.

So glad to be gluten-free again!

Yea me too. I find it helpful to place a firm pillow between my knees sleeping on my side. If stuff gets bad enough I take gluten-free asprin which seems to help.

Dairy does this to me. For a long time I thought my hip was out. I went to two chiropractors. The back pain went on for several months before I developed obvious dairy intolerance, then dairy protein allergy, soy protein allergy, allergies to many other favorite foods. Looking back it seems the celiacs was causing leaky gut.

Since going gluten free I've tried small amounts of dairy twice. Both times the back pain that feels like my hip is out came back. I have not had that pain without the dairy in all these months not even when accidentally glutened.

Hope this helps

That happened to me from eating cheddar cheese! Also happens when I get CC'd from gluten as well as a whole bunch of other symptoms. 24 hour home made yogurt is just fine for me however...

Oh wow this happens to ME! I was diagnosed in August and I have been gluten free until 2 days ago. My kids asked for cookies at the store. Normally I would make them myself but I said ok to the treat. Well of course the kids wanted one now. I put one in my mouth w/o thinking!! I had to RACE home to go to the bathroom, had back pain and shoulder pain for the remainder of the day. I NEVER thought that it could be from the gluten.

Hips especially.

Also any joint I've "used" eg after gardening while suffering glutening - hands, knees, ankles especially.

And some muscle cramps in legs & feet

Yes, it is indeed surprising. I'm so grateful to finally finding a possible link between my pain and what I eat. Wow.

ABSOLUTELY!!! My back pain used to be so bad prior to my diagnoses that my doctors were 100% certain I had some rare kidney condition but they just could not figure out what it was. I would get pains so bad in my lower back on both the right and left sides -- but mostly the right side -- that I could not walk, it hurt to sit. I felt sick to my stomach, dizzy, and I ended up having to take pain killers a lot to get rid of it.

Now, since I've been gluten free for 6 months now, I've noticed when I've made "mistakes" on my diet and accidently eaten something with gluten, my very first indications are I start to get a little twinge of pain in my back and then my joints hurt REALLY bad (like I have arthritis), then the stomach issues, and then I have a headache, irritability, and fatigue for a week and a half.

I would sometimes define my left hip pain from cc as "excruciating", particularly at night- and I have lived through kidney stones and natural childbirth to a 10 pound baby! EVIL gluten! Other joints hurt and crack as well. Fun!

Yes! When I did my gluten challenge, there were a few days toward the end when I would experience horrible sharp pain in my kidney area. It would almost cripple me . . . and then it would subside a bit after a while. Thank you for sharing this.

OMG! I have such terrible back pain I can't stand it. I was diagnosed this summer so I am pretty new to this whole disease and find myself quite lost actually.!! I was beginning to think something was seriously wrong with my back.....thank you for sharing! I just can't believe back pain is from gluten!

angieInCA Apprentice

Before my diagnoses I had terrible lower back pain and left hip pain that would shoot down my thigh and would inhibit my ability to walk. I had a several tests that included 2 MRIs. The Doctors were at a loss and told me that I must have sinovial cysts that would eventually put me in a wheel chair. They said there was a surgery for it to relieve the pain but they wouldn't do it till I couldn't walk anymore becasue the surgery was very invasive and would render me unable to walk. No pain killers touched the pain.

I went Gluten Free last Oct (almost 1 year :) ) Within 2 weeks the pain had subsided considerably. After 6 weeks my back and hip were pain free and I was able to walk freely. Also, the athritis in my hands had virtually disappeared.

Now, if I get glutened, I feel the pain within 24 hours and it takes 4 to 5 days for it to go away.

your story is amazing! just can't believe dr's aren't more trained or aware of this disease. but thank you for heads up.....i will wait 4-5 days and pray pain will be gone then!

YES! I was recently diagnosed and am so happy that I'm not losing my mind. I have been suffering from lower back pain for about 5 years, and havent been able to get any answers on the cause until now. I am still in my first two weeks of shifting my diet and hope that I'll continue to feel better. It's much harder than I thought!

I totally get upper right back pain into my shoulder! its sometimes one of the ways i can tell ive been glutened! i work for a chiropractor and asked him about this and said how your stomach nerves are directly related to you stomach or intestines, when i get this pain its because its disturbing my stomach or intestines that it actually throws my vertebrae out of wack!! its some crazy stuff how everything in your body is connected!

I am so sorry that so many people suffer from this, yet I am very happy to hear I am not alone.

I just got back from a Disney World vacation -- a wonderful, healthy gluten free week (I'm going to post a gluten free review as soon as I can), except on my last day, I made a horrible mistake. I ate a Divvies choc. chip cookie thinking it was gluten free (a cast member told me they were), so I had one WITHOUT READING THE LABEL FIRST, which as we all know is a Bozo-no-no -- if there's a label, never take anyone's word without checking first. My fault.

I thought the cookie was not great, but pretty good, so I decided to check the calories and BAM, first ingredient is wheat. My heart sank.

I became symptomatic shortly thereafter. The next day, my lower back, kidney area, hips went right back to the way they used to be. Wow, I have no doubt now about gluten causing the problem.

I'm still having D and the pain. It's been six days and counting since getting glutened. Since I'm still new to all this, I guess the up side is that it will be a good lesson for me as well as a good learning in how long I remain symptomatic after blowing it.

It might not all be from the cookie. This week, I baked some Wal-Mart chicken legs that I am learning may not be gluten free. I'm going to post the question on the food board here. Anyway, if it is not gluten free, it may have furthered the symptoms.

Back pain, what a pain! But how wonderful that giving up gluten has helped all of us. It continually amazes me the problems that come from gluten -- things I (and my doctors for many years) NEVER suspected.

Again, I am sorry others have had to go through it, but it is soooo comforting to know I am not alone.

Amazing subject!

I'm one week into this and I can't tell you how much I learn everytime I come to this forum!

My lower back would tighten up so bad that I'd whine! alot!

I shook it off as being out of shape and an old injury flaring up. But it was between the shoulder blades and the left shoulder too.

I'm not experiencing this anymore - after 1 week!

My discomfort in all those areas were very concerning to me - I couldn't walk without it tightening up and disabling me......to find out it's all because of gluten!

I'm certainly amazed that I have the answers now to my concerns and my doctor knew it just by symptoms.

Now I feel empowered to know that I am NOT alone in what I've felt all this time.

I did have a glass of Rum the other nite and woke up at 2 am with a swollen neck and the shoulder pain.......and I was doing so good knowing the pains were going away - and today I feel tons better.

Just a trial and error thing.

I know now that I'm on the road to recovery and a healthy body, mind and soul by cutting out this nasty thing called gluten!

Here's to better health!

Thank you for enlighteing me!

UPDATE! I got glutened!

and man did my back and shoulder hurt! The back pain feels like cramps before a period but only they sting a little more. The shoulder and neck were my first clue that I got glutened (after 11 days!) and I got furious.

I layed in bed and couldn't sleep while the pain was like experiencing a flu. Started feeling a pressure and tingling in my legs too - but the back! !@#@$!!%@

I'm just feeling a little sore today but am gonna head to Meijers anyways. (gluten free event)

It's real......OH YEAH! It's real!

yep, upper right back moving under the shoulder blade. one of my conclusive signs that I've been glutened

Soooo this may be the reason....

I woke up one day with extreme hip pain in my right hip a couple months ago. I nearly fell when I got out of bed. I was in so much pain I was almost to tears. My hubby had me take some naproxin which is for inflammation and the pain subsided somewhat. The next day I was fine.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out what my problem was. I was beginning to think I had migratory arthritis and was a hair away from going to the doc to find out what was wrong. It was warm and slightly red that day. I had a similar incident summer of 08. I was in Missouri visiting my hubby's family for the first time and I woke up the day we were leaving with a horrible pain on my knee..it wasn't inside...but on the outside like it was sitting on the bone and was red, swollen and very painful. I had to ride on the plane in the cramped up seat with this pain. The next day I was fine. I know I was ingesting gluten while there...it was impossible to avoid.

Yes, I compltely understand. As you quoted, my hip pain can be extreme, too. It especially hits hardest in the middle of the night, making sleep quite difficult. FOR YEARS I never knew it was related to gluten.

I'm glad to see that your symptoms seem to get better after only about 24 hours. I know 24 hours is a long time, but for many it can take longer. So, I guess that is a little silver lining, anyway. : )

Wow! I actually have a kidney disease, and I have thought it strange that I have a pain attack after being accidentally glutened. Perhaps it hasn't been my kidney at all. Thanks for the info!

It could be a fructan intolerance? How do you do with dates?  https://www.dietvsdisease.org/sorry-your-gluten-sensitivity-is-actually-a-fructan-intolerance/

Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!

my IGG is 815 IGA 203  but tTG-Iga is   <0.4!!!!!!!!!!!!!   oh my god- 13 days of agony and the test is negative?  I don't even know what to do next. There zero doubt in my mind that I have an issue with wheat and probably more so with gluten as symptoms are dramatically worse the more gluten a product has   I am going to write up the history of my issues for the past few years and start a food/symptom diary to bring with me to the GI doctor in March.   I googled like crazy to try to find out what other things might cause these symptoms and the only thing that truly fits besides celiac is NCGS   but I guess there are some other things I maybe should be tested for ...? like SIBO?   I will continue to eliminate any foods that cause me distress (as I have been doing for the past couple of years) and try to keep a record. Can anyone recommend an app or some form or something that would simplify this? I have a very full and busy life and taking the time to write out each symptom name in full would be tedious and time consuming- some sort of page with columns to check off would be ideal. I am not at all tech savvy so that's not something I can make myself ... I'm hoping there's some thing out there that I can just download and print out   do I give up on testing for celiac with such a low number? I am 70 yrs old I have been almost completely off gluten for the most part for about 2 yrs. I had a meal of vital wheat gluten vegan roast,  rolls and stuffing made from home baked bread and an apple pie- and had the worst pain and gas and bloating and odd rumblings in my gut etc - almost went to the ER it was so bad. I was thinking, since I'm spilling a lot of calcium in my urine, that perhaps this was a kidney stone (never had one before but there's always that first time, right?)    Saw my endo on Jan 20th and after hearing the story about the symptoms from eating that holiday meal, she suggested doing a gluten challenge. She said 2 weeks was fine- she said stopping it in the middle if symptoms got bad was fine- In the meantime I'd read that 2 weeks was not enough- called and argued with the nurse about this, but ultimately decided to stop the gluten on the 13th day and get the test done because I was in too much pain and almost suicidal and knew I could not continue.   so.............. that's where I am now I have had no bread since Sunday. I did have some rolled oats today and had some gas and bloating afterwards I did have some wheat germ in a smoothie on Tuesday and had a stomach ache later that night.   but overall I feel so much better! all the joint pain is gone! the nausea is gone. The stomach pain and gas and bloating are going away. Still a bit gassy but no more of that horrible odor. wow, that would clear a room if I was out in public!  I see a GI nurse March 4th  I hope she'll be able to help sort this out! can you think of what my next steps might be?

What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.
