Splenda - Are You Using This Product?

I have used Splenda for years and never thought much about it - until the day before yesterday. I had a bad flare up and decided to lay low on most foods - ate little, drank decafinated tea (with splenda), and was hoping to ride through this in a day or two. But each time I drank a cup of tea, I started to feel worse and worse. The next day I stopped using the Splenda in my tea and drank it plain (tasted terrible) but I found much relief from not adding the sweetner. Yesterday I did the same. I felt a whole lot better and no longer had the terrible diarrhea. Today I feel great! While on the computer yesterday, I did a search on Splenda and found this blog - I think it is worth reading....

Every single artificial sweetener out there makes me sick: sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol, aspartame, splenda....

Somehow my body just hates them. I stick with plain sugar or honey, mmmmm :)

Only the sugar alcohols make me sick. I drink drinks containing Aspartame all the time. Drinks with Splenda once in a while. I don't add the sweetener. Just drink things containing it.

Use powdered Splenda maybe twice a year in cranberry salad.

Me too. I also go with just plain sugar or honey. Stevia might be something to try in place of artificial sweetners.

I actually tried some Splenda over New Years while visiting relates. It went down ok for me. I'll try it a little more now and see how it goes. But generally I use sugar or agave syrup or some such thing if I want something sweet. Generally I avoid honey due to possible allergy reactions. I did get some Truvia (Stevia product) to try too. Will be trying it in a few days or so.

I finally had to acknowledge that splenda was bad for me. UUhhh, stomach aches and bloating. Had to give up the aspertame because I realized it was agravating my Fibro, then went caffene free on top of that. Read an article about these plus agave nectar can aggravate the Fibro. Starting to do better now. Stevia has been a big help.

I've tried Stevia and Truvia(Stevia and Cane Sugar blend), but I just can't get over the taste. I am so so sensitive to taste and I just can't stand the taste of Stevia. I could probably make myself like it if used it enough, but I'm sticking with pure sugar for now :)

I know plenty of non-celiac who cannot use any of the sugar substitutes. It wouldn't surprise me that we who do have more immuno or sensitivities would also have issues with this.

Splenda has always made me sick and I just think it tastes gross. I hate that all the sugar free syrups at coffee shops use it. It makes me gag. It's that bad. However I use Sweet n' Low and love it...a lot of people say it has an aftertaste but I don't notice it. I am trying to cut back on my addiction to those little pink packets so I've been using a lot of Stevia in the Raw. It's stevia and dextrose. The taste takes awhile to get used to but I'm ok with it.

I liked the taste of Splenda, but during the time I was using it I had night sweats, trouble sleeping, feeling of being off-kilter, stomach aches, and migraines.

I didn't connect those things with the Splenda for quite a while--when I stopped using it, the symptoms subsided.

I'm sensitive to a lot of things and get migraines as a result. The other things only happened with Splenda. I stick with sugar or maple syrup.

You're right! I meant to say Purvia but it came out wrong :) Thanks for correcting! I won't touch Truvia since it has erythritol.

About Truvia. There's a big difference between it and other Stevia products. Stevia has a strong flavor that many, including myself, find unpleasant. Truvia uses Rabania, which they derive by steeping the Stevia leaf and then extracting only the desirable portion, discarding the bad tasting parts.

The Rabania is then blended with erythritol for bulk so it can be made into a large granulated product resembling sugar. Since Stevia is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, it has to be bulked up with something. They claim erythritol is the best tasting of the sugar alcohols, and I believe it. I've tried every available new product containing Stevia and/or Rabania and various sugar alcohols, and Truvia has the best taste by far, and the best sugar like texture and volume. At least for my tastebuds. I can actually wet my finger, sprinkle some Truvia on it, lick it off, and it taste good to me.

I'm not a diabetic, so don't consume any sugar free products containing sugar alcohols. I probably only use 2-3 packets a day. Ingesting too much sugar alcohols can cause gastric distess, they say. I've never noticed. Also, I use just one packet per cup of coffee and it's the equivalent of two teaspoons of sugar, for me. If you are one to put more sugar, or sugar substitute, it may very well make it bad tasting. My daughter tried it, but she likes a lot of sugar, and so put four packets and it tasted awful.

It's also pretty expensive, almost 10 cents a packet.

p.s., Erythritol is a natural sweetener which is found in fruits such as pears and grapes.

p.s.s., About the actual thread topic. Splenda is my favorite artificial sweetener. I much prefer it to Equal, and sweet & Low makes me gag.

I can't stand the aftertaste that splenda leaves in my mouth. I also like the Truvia the best.

      learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D  got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH   I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption

      I am on day 13 of eating gluten  and have decided to have the celiac panel done tomorrow instead of Wed. (and instead of extending it a few more weeks) because I am SO incredibly sick. I have almost no appetite and am not able to consume the required daily intake of calcium to try to keep up with the loss of calcium from the high parathyroid hormone and/or the renal calcium leak.    I have spent the past 15 years working hard to improve my health. I lost 50lbs, got off handfuls of medications, lowered my cholesterol to enviable levels, and in spite of having end stage osteoarthritis in both knees, with a good diet and keeping active I have NO pain in those joints- til now.  Almost all of my joints hurt now I feel like someone has repeatedly punched me all over my torso- even my ribs hurt- I have nausea, gas, bloating, headache, mood swings, irritability, horrid flatulence (afraid to leave the house or be in any enclosed spaces with other people- the smell would knock them off their feet) I was so sure that I wanted a firm diagnosis but now- I'm asking myself is THIS worth it? esp over the past 2 yrs I have been feeling better and better the more I adjusted my diet to exclude highly refined grains and processed foods. I didn't purposely avoid gluten, but it just happened that not eating gluten has made me feel better.   I don't know what I would have to gain by getting a definitive diagnosis. I think possibly the only advantage to a DX would be that I could insist on gluten-free foods in settings where I am unable to have access to foods of my choice (hospital, rehab, nursing home)  and maybe having a medical reason to see a dietician?   please let me know if it's reasonable to just go back to the way I was eating.  Actually I do plan to buy certified gluten-free oats as that is the only grain I consume (and really like) so there will be some minor tweaks I hope and pray that I heal quickly from any possible damage that may have been done from 13 days of eating gluten.

      So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

      I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this.Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
