Pizza definitely! For some reason Auntie Anne's pretzels get me everytime I walk by in the mall...sigh. Anyone else dream about eating gluten? Since I was diagnosed I dream about eating things I shouldn't and it seems so real I start getting upset thinking I shouldn't be eating this!! :)

I have dreams where someone forces me to eat gluten to make me sick! I think I might rather have your dreams

I don't miss specific foods surprisingly. I thought that I would, but I'm to the point where if I want something, I can make it, and if I don't want to make it then I guess I didn't want it so bad after all.

I do miss convenience and spontanaiety. I had a messed up relationship with food before (eating disorder) and having to think about every bite of food that I eat really isn't good for me mentally. But what else am I going to do?

Definitely the convenience of being able to go anywhere on the spur of the moment without worrying about CC and so on. The most difficult is traveling to other countries where language is an issue (even with restaurant cards).

As far as food goes, authentic Italian wood-fired pizza. And great fresh pasta. Have been making fresh gluten-free pasta but it just isn't the same! Am also experimenting with pastry. gluten-free Profiteroles just don't compare, either.

Lea and Perrins Worcestershire in Canada is not gluten-free - miss that.

Haven't found bagels, phyllo, croissants, buns or English muffins I love - some are almost ok but barely edible so am making all my own.

I miss standing at the pantry, looking at my expensive fabulous condiments.

To freely walk into anywhere with my children and freely eat without worry. Bud-light, Paneras sandwiches really bad!! My daughter and I would eat there once or twice a month. Subway, Papa Johns cheese bread. A good bagel. My favorite mexican place and BBQ joint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So true!! Every time I eat out on a gluten-free menu I have to think "Is this really worth it? If I get really sick, can I be admitted to Labor and Delivery tonight for fluids?" I am so tired of worrying. Also... I miss...

BURRITOS~!!!! LOL

I also miss

Krispy Kreme doughnuts

Cheesticks

Corn dogs and funnel cake from the fair

Churros

a good sandwich

Mcdonalds cheeseburgers

Wendys chicken nuggets

Taco bells soft chx taco

Good homemade waffles

My moms homemade noodles and homemade rolls

Italian and french bread from the bakery

and the list goes on.....

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY miss flour tortillas... I don't like corn tortillas in the same way. For a quick lunch I used to eat refried beans, cheddar cheese and salsa in a flour tortilla. I won't eat a corn tortilla burrito... blah.. I also used to eat a flour tortilla with turkey, mustard, sprouts, cucumbers and cheese. Loved making my own wraps. Or I'd melt some cheddar cheese on a tortilla with salsa.... <sigh>

I've heard there are some "rice" tortillas, I need to try to find some because if anything were to set me back, it would be this sacrifice. Other than that, I've found perfectly acceptable replacements for everything else. A local chain makes an AWESOME gluten free pizza and I found Jason's Deli to be great so I have two really good substitutes for those kind of take-out meals.

^ Goldfish! Yes. I also miss mozzarella sticks. I have tried making my own but they never turn out tasting very good. I miss pierogies, and soft, warm Italian bread. I seem to have found an acceptable substitute or recipe for everything else.

What DON'T I miss??

I miss Subway tuna hoagies

I miss stuffed crust Pizza Hut Pizza

I miss Burger King's bacon double cheeseburger...

... and McDonald's double cheeseburger and Big Macs

I miss REAL french bread

I miss ice cream sandwiches and Carvel cakes w/ cookie crumbles as the middle

I miss Girl Scout cookies

I miss Tasty Cakes

I miss Olive Garden

I miss all the fair food I used to enjoy

I miss Rice Krispie treats w/o having to buy really expensive cereal

I miss being able to order anything from any menu w/o dire consequences

I've never tasted:

A Krispie Kreme donut

Anything from Panera

A panini sandwich

Lots of things I can't remember at the moment

I've been gluten-free for nearly 10 years, but every once in a while... I'm really nostalgic for the stuff I can't have anymore.

I think this is an important post. You've shown that even after 10 years, you'll still miss food. That's okay! For me, every year gets easier, but I still miss certain foods. What I've found, though, is that I don't dwell on it anymore. I can pick up a pizza for my kids and have a short pity-party for myself, but quickly shake it off and make myself some dinner. What do I really feel on nights like this? I feel like a neglectful mom who feeds her kids crap while she makes herself something healthy to eat. That goes for most of the food I miss. When I watch my kids eat it, I temporarily feel sorry for myself but then I am horrified that I'm letting them eat it!

I'll just have to double up eating the lobstah and buttah......LOL

Chewy crusty hot bread. :( sigh...

Other than that, add me to the "convenience" list. I really hate to cook, and have never baked from scratch in my life. I made quiche the other day and made my crust from gluten-free Bisquick. Just Bisquick, shortening, and water. But it was more effort than I'm used to putting in for crust. I used to buy the frozen kind.

And for whoever it was who said they miss rice crispy treats without having to buy special cereal -- well, I just heard that Kelloggs is making Rice Crispies gluten free! woot! lol..

My Mom's homemade apple pie. It is beyond delicious--truly the BEST pie in the world-- and it was my "birthday cake" my whole life. Every bite was orgasmic. I was born on Thanksgiving. Last Thanksgiving, she did not make it for the family-- so I wouldn't feel bad. I cried anyway.

My husband's fresh baked French bread...crispy on the outside and squishy on the inside. Heaven!!

Our awesome homemade pizza. We had the dough down to a science. Total Perfection.

Creating masterpieces in the kitchen. I haven't felt well enough to do that in 3 years.

I also miss calling people up spontaneously and saying meet me at ....(fill in the blank with a pub or restaurant's name) and eating/drinking whatever I darn well please.

I miss the convenience of just picking up something on the run.

I miss a lot of things. :(

What don't I miss?? Feeling like death every single day. :D

I miss the social aspect of food. Can't eat the food at pot lucks, group restaurant trips, game night....and people are so confused. "there is no flour in it" they say. But what canned, seasoned or other miscell. did you add in there? Lol. And definitely the convenience since I loved fast food. But thankfully would trade that for the pain going away :)

Not only am I intolerant of gluten, but also dairy and corn, and probably other foods that I have not figured out yet. There is not much I can eat these days. Before I knew about the dairy and corn intolerances, I was missing these gluten foods:

-Samosas

-ravioli/dumplings/tortelini/gnocchi

-crab rangoons

-all chinese food (especially deep fried ORANGE CHICKEN)

-Unagi (with Unagi sauce)

-Cracklin' Oat Bran cereal

-Ferraro Rochet chocolates

-most types of meat balls

-many curry dishes

-Wontons

-pies

-french fries

-Java chip frappucinos

-bread and soup

-many types of chili

-Tiramisu

-Nutella sandwiches

-stuffed french toast/belgian waffles

-Malt balls

-Ramen Noodles (don't judge!)

I miss walking out the door for the day/weekend with only my license and debit card!

I miss beer battered fish tacos and pot stickers. =)

And, I very much miss the social aspect of food, too... sharing a bunch of appetizers, passing around plates and sampling it all.

Ahhh... must learn to cook more exciting foods :P

I'm no help on the beer. :P BUT I noticed you mentioning Italian food. My best friend is Italian and she comes and makes me her "mum mum's homemade gravy" or for swedes like me her " grandmothers homemade spaghetti sauce" LOL Anyway, I found some AWESOME gnocchi's at whole foods that are gluten-free. They were potato and basil.... and mixed with my best friends "gravy", it ROCKED!

I make delicious gluten-free potato ricotta gnudi as well as pasta and sauces. My husband and I travel to Italy twice a year and I find it extremely difficult to pass on the gluten-laden dishes there. Traveling to different countries is when I am most tempted - at home I'm not as I make everthing myself. But Italy....sigh....

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.

Hi,  I care for my seven year old daughter with Celiac. After watching her for months, I have figured out that she has problem with two kinds of fats- animal fat and cooking oils. It basically makes her intestine sore enough that she feels spasms when she is upset. It only happens on days when she has eaten more fat than her usual every day diet. (Her usual diet has chia seeds, flaxseeds, and avocado/ pumpkin seeds for fat and an occasional chicken breast.) I stopped using cooking oils last year, and when I reintroduced eggs and dairy, both of which I had held off for a few months thinking it was an issue of the protein like some Celiac patients habe mentioned to be the case, she has reacted in the same fashion as she does with excess fats. So now I wonder if her reaction to dairy and eggs is not really because of protein but fat.   I don't really have a question, just wondering if anyone finds this familiar and if it gets better with time.  Thank you.

Hello, My name is Chanda and you are not the only one that gose through the same things. I have found that what's easiest for me is finding a few meals each week that last. I have such severe reactions to gluten that it shuts my entire body down. I struggle everyday with i can't eat enough it feels like, when I eat more I lose more weight. Make sure that you look at medication, vitamins and shampoo and conditioner also. They have different things that are less expensive at Walmart.

Thank you so much! I saw some tips around the forum to make a food diary and now that I know that the community also struggles with corn, egg and soy, the puzzle pieces came together! Just yesterday I tried eating eggs and yes, he’s guilty and charged. Those there are my 3 combo nausea troublemakers. I’m going to adjust my diet ☺️ Also thank you for the information about MCAS! I’m from South America and little it’s talked about it in here. It’s honestly such a game changer now for treatment and recovery. I know I’m free from SIBO and Candida since I’ve been tested for it, but I’m still going to make a endoscopy to test for H. Pylori and Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Thank you again!! Have a blessed weekend 🤍

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.
