  1. My advice: find a new doctor. In my opinion any doctor who goes straight to "IBS" and "depression" is on a path that isn't going to help you. They may have the best intentions (or he may just be catering to the demands of insurance companies who don't want to pay for the tests), but you don't deserve to go through life with these miserable symptoms. You deserve...
  2. Misinformation is one of our biggest challenges. My encouragement is for everyone to do whatever you can to get the misinformation taken care of: write the producers of the pamphlet, write the people who are giving out the pamphlet. Just say, "I'm concerned about the misinformation..." state what is wrong and maybe provide the resources to back yourself up...
  3. Many people report withdrawal symptoms after going gluten free. Most likely, just drink plenty of water, hang in there, and you will be feeling much better soon! However, I have read that because of all the chemicals in our water supply, menopause is happening early for some women. So while your doctor is probably right that it isn't menopause (most likely...
  4. Yep, I get that feeling! It sucks. I used to think that maybe the water from my shower or hand washing had been too hot. Mine is often on my arms or hands, and it will move around. One day the side of my palm, the next my forearm, etc. There is never any visible aspect to it; it's just a sensation.
  5. It's hard to reframe how you think about food. But really that's the only way to make it work. You can't think about it as a diet, but as a better lifestyle that is going to make your life MUCH better. I have hereditary high cholesterol, and after a while of eating healthier food, the bad stuff actually tastes bad to me. You kind of have to go on a cooking...
  6. Being glutened. Definitely sounds like ongoing glutening and gluten withdrawal. It's easy to forget or mistrust just how much gluten can affect our heads. Every time I recover from a glutening, it's like a reawakening of "Oh, that was all just from gluten, I forgot it was really THAT bad." Celiac has a way of isolating people, especially when...

    ARCHIVED Stiff Joints

Yep I get joint pain when I gluten myself. It usually lasts about a week. But here are some non-celiac related tips: Make sure you are doing things ergonomically correct so that you are not in positions that are more likely to stress your joints. Some strength training may help take the stress of the joints. Stretch. Lots. Make sure you are...
  8. Sounds exactly like celiac to me. And maybe a sensitivity to soy as well? Of course, this is not the only possibility, so it is best to see a doctor. And yes, since the damage of celiac accrues over time, if you have not been eating gluten regularly for some time, a false negative is likely. If you have only eaten gluten a couple of times in the past...
  9. I just did some fuzzy math (math is NOT my strong suit, so feel free to double check my numbers). But in the US, we consume an average of 775 grams of food per day per person. So 20ppm x 775g/1000=15.5mg/day. Studies show that we should consume less than 50mg of gluten/day. Though one person in the study did get sick off a regular dosing of 10mg/day...
  10. I doubt anyone will ever start labeling fresh produce or eggs (in their shells) as gluten-free, but the other month, I realized some frozen veggies I bought had wheat in them. WHY???? There was nothing on the front to tell me to expect anything other than fresh, frozen veggies. It was not until I saw that they were not on the "gluten-free" list that I even...
  11. I spoke to soon! This period is kicking my a**. Anyone have harsher periods from being glutened during the month, or should I assume my body finally caught up with being off the pill?
  12. I went on the pill to help with cramps and heavy bleeding. I have stopped taking it a few times (traveling and other such reasons). Everytime, I lose about 10-20 pounds, otherswise I'm great untill three months in, when the cramping would come back. EXCEPT after going gluten-free. My cramping and bleeding are a little worse than they were on the pill, but...
  13. Many of us have discussed concerns with the following section of the the new proposal: to deem misbranded a food bearing a gluten-free claim in its labeling if the food is inherently free of gluten and if the claimed does not refer to all foods of that same type (e.g., "milk, a gluten-free food" or "all milk is gluten-free"). I for one would be happy...

    ARCHIVED Twins

I have a fraternal twin. Neither of us have had a biopsi, but I confirmed I have the gene. We had both been getting sicker for years and have had complete turn arounds in health on the gluten-free diet. I have no doubt that we both have active celiac.
  15. There's just too much potential for people messing with nature and not admitting it, that adding the label to anything that is gluten free seems great to me, that way we can see it and move on, without having to look for the ingredients and make sure.
  16. if you catch it before the reaction starts (for instance a well-meaning family member tells you something is gluten free, you eat it, then read the label...) you can take charcoal pills to try to absorb the gluten. i also take fiber supplement with psyllium husks to help clear the system more quickly.
  17. One or both of your parents had the gene. And your kids have at least a 50% chance of inheriting the gene from you. For the disease to actually become active, however, (as mentioned by others) there has to be a trigger (theories are that a virus, trauma, emotional trauma, etc., somehow activates the gene). Chances are, even if your kids have the gene, they...
  18. They need to know This is not a fad diet. Celiac is a life-threatening disease that means we have to be on a gluten-free diet for life. It can cause debilitating health conditions ranging from migraines, to symptoms of a stomach flu, to neurological problems, to permanent nerve damage, to cancer and additional life-threatening conditions. Many celiacs are...
  19. Was in Annapolis for the day and had dinner at Jalapenos. What a wonderful experience!! The margarita was the best I have had since leaving Texas and they even had a dessert I could eat. (This is actually a mix of Spanish and Mexican food, complete with several choices of Paella!)
  20. I waited about 3 months before using lactase enzymes with lactose, and still had some problems with lactose. So I would recommend waiting a bit longer. At 6 months, I found I could do lactose with the enzymes and could have small amounts without the enzymes without consequence. I ate dark chocolate the entire time.
  21. Not sure this will help, but I sometimes have a feeling like I am being pricked in the right pinky by a needle. It often is accompanied by a similar feeling on the center of my chest. It always happens in the same locations. It only lasts a split second and seems to happen much less often now that I am gluten free. I also have a feeling like ice water running...
  22. So if I have two cans of the same product, one that says gluten free and one that says made in a facility... is that just a change in labeling and both should be considered made in a facility?
  23. We were writing at the same time, so I wanted to add, Good for you! Make sure you are consistent. Cat's are intelligent, and chances are if you are not consistent, she'll learn you aren't serious. Maybe he should be involved in the discipline, too. Otherwise it's like a kid who has learned to pit her parents against each other. If it's his baby, she probably...
  24. Talk about a double standard! He's fine as long as neither you or the cat are waking him up. I'm a huge animal lover, and my pets always slept with me, but if the three of you can't all get the sleep you need, something's gotta give. I vote for waking him up every time the cat wakes you up. Let him see what you are going through. Essentially, his rules...
  25. Allergy shots, regular nasal flushes, ENT, etc... None of it helped. I still had chronic sinus infections (literally 7 times a year) for about 3 years. I have not had one since going gluten free. It was a sudden and 100 percent turn around when I started the diet. (I do still use a neti pot on a regular basis, because I have always had severe airborne...
