ARCHIVED Advice About My Gasroscopy Please....
ravenwoodglass replied to fozbery's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Strong cravings are really common. One of my children was literally addicted to pasta from his first taste and had to have it for dinner every night. I also had bread cravings and would even with stuff like breaded chicken eat the breading but leave the chicken or sit and eat a whole loaf of italian bread in one sitting. Yes the cravings do diminish but... -
ARCHIVED Trial Diet Questions
ravenwoodglass replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Tell us what personal care items you are already using as they may be gluten free and not need to be replaced. If you use stainless pots and they are not stained or badly scratched those should be okay. You could get a small nonstick pan at a discount store to use for the trial for not a lot of money. For gluten free pastas simply use a clean utensil or... -
Your doctor will have to order a gluten free barium. It will be clear and do double check with the Xray tech before you drink it. The clear stuff is not too tough to drink but if the barium is not gluten free and you are a diagnosed celiac it will make you ill. Been there, done that. The prep to clean you out you should check on when you pick up the script...

ARCHIVED Tricked Into The Blood Test And I Need Resources!
ravenwoodglass replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If that was my husband he would be sleeping on the couch for a month. Do look for another doctor and when you get the results of the thyroid tests do give her a piece of your mind. I would also report the doctor to head of the medical organzation she works for. -
ARCHIVED Glutened Or New Allergy?
ravenwoodglass replied to annegirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What are you putting on the Rice Chex as a milk alternative? Yes the reaction to something you are intolerant to can show up later in the day or even a few days later. It can make it hard to pinpoint what it is that is getting us. A symptom and food log can be helpful in finding a pattern. -
ARCHIVED Dry Mouth A Side Effect?
ravenwoodglass replied to Terri O's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have never heard of this as a side effect to going gluten free. Do you take any medications? Some can give this effect. Have you greatly increased your intake of carbs or sugar to 'replace' the gluten foods that you have given up? Are you getting up at night to pee? I know this answer was more question than answer but if it doesn't resolve soon and the... -
ARCHIVED Is Dh Considered A Fungus Infection?
ravenwoodglass replied to catarific's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It is not either an allergic or a fungus reaction. DH is an autoimmune reaction caused by antibody action in the skin. -
ARCHIVED "pretty Much Normal"
ravenwoodglass replied to canutillo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
'Pretty much normal' says to me it may be a low positive. I could be wrong of course but do get a hard and complete copy of those tests. When all the tests are done do a trial of the diet no matter what the results. -
I personally have a real problem with the idea that 98% of celiacs carry those 2 associated genes. The reason being is that they have not routinely tested all blood and biopsy proven celiacs to see what genes they do carry. IMHO it is very likely that there are a lot more than 2% of us that carry one of the other up to 27 associated genes. Of the 4 diagnosed...

ARCHIVED Was Getting The Hang Of It...i Thought
ravenwoodglass replied to jesimae's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Instead of waiting for spring break can you call your daughters ped and ask if you can pick up a lab slip for her to be screened. Since you have already been diagnosed and the ped should be able to see her history of GI issues in her chart there shouldn't be an issue with her getting the blood test done. If your daughter is asking when she can be tested she... -
ARCHIVED Off The Wall Question
ravenwoodglass replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's a pretty common reaction to getting glutened. It will pass but it may take a few days. -
ARCHIVED How Accurate Are Blood Tests
ravenwoodglass replied to suziq0805's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When the tests are postive they are positive but false negatives are pretty common, as another poster said about 20% and I have seen up to 30%. The same applies to biopsies. Also children have an even higher rate of false negatives than adults. Do give the diet a good strict try after testing is done. The body can tell you the answer better than the tests... -
ARCHIVED Good Deal On Udi's Bread
ravenwoodglass replied to Roda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I will have to get that coupon. For those that go to Wegmans they have it marked down from $4.99 to $3.59 for the last few weeks so I have been stocking up. -
ARCHIVED Backwards Symptoms?
ravenwoodglass replied to Bastian's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do give up the milk and oatmeal and make sure you are avoiding the other gluten grains like barley and rye. The reason why your sisters second test came back negative was because it can take 3 months or more to redamage yourself enough for a positive test. I do hope your sister is still gluten free. What you are describing is not D. It does sound like you... -
ARCHIVED Blood? Not Sure
ravenwoodglass replied to scottyg354's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My vote is for peppers and tomato but if you are concerned ask your doctor to do a occult blood stool test. I think blood clots in the stool would likely look black not red and fresh red blood would be from the very end of the GI tract, usually hemmie related and wouldn't be hard to squish. I am not a medical professional so if you are worried to call your... -
Keep in mind that the diet doesn't heal us instantly and it can take some time before symptoms go away. I would drop that hair gel and look for something that is gluten free. Dove, Suave, Garneir, Giovanni and Unilever are among those companies that will clearly label gluten ingredients in their products.

ARCHIVED Any Hints Of Successfully Introducing New Kitten To Older Pets
ravenwoodglass replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
How sweet our big guys can be. In my own personal experience it is the huge dogs that tend to be the most gentle and loving when it comes to accepting new little fur balls. Thanks for sharing a sweet story that brought back memories of my own big ole LD. -
ARCHIVED Kellogg's Gluten-Free Rice Krispies
ravenwoodglass replied to savvvyseller's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hopefully they won't do a 'Rice Dream' on us and just leave the barley malt off the box because 'it tests at a safe level'. I do so wish they would get the labeling regs to insist that gluten grains other than just wheat be required to be listed when used in any amount or any where in the processing. That would let us make our own choice in relation to our... -
ARCHIVED Advice About My Gasroscopy Please....
ravenwoodglass replied to fozbery's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes you do sound like you could be one of us which is why I am urging you to try the diet no matter what the test results. In the end go by what your body is telling you once you get onto the diet. -
They actually do have the newest test DGP in there for both IGA deficient folks and those not IGA deficient. So they are up to date. The only thing I don't agree with it that they suggest the gene typing as a part of the first step. Too often if the genes DQ2 orDQ8 are not present they stop looking and say nope can't be celiac. They are not the only major...

ARCHIVED Think I Might Have Celiacs - Binge Eating, Mood Swings, Tummy Issues
ravenwoodglass replied to ie99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You seem to be concentrating on GI symptoms when you say 'it's not disabling, just uncomfortable and annoying' but what about what it may be doing to your brain. You mention it effecting your grades and you talk about depression and binge eating. Celiac can be directly related to issues with thought and mood. I don't know if your symptoms are due to gluten... -
ARCHIVED Trial Diet Questions
ravenwoodglass replied to October3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is a personal preference but I feel it is best to be very strict in the beginning eliminating all sources and then when the person heals add back in the stuff that might be risky. -
ARCHIVED Burning Skin Sensations
ravenwoodglass replied to IrishHeart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When you say your B12 is high what is it? Is it above 1000? Are you supplementing B12 sublingually? Are you taking a multi with folate? Folate can make the B12 reading higher than it really is. -
ARCHIVED Think I Might Have Celiacs - Binge Eating, Mood Swings, Tummy Issues
ravenwoodglass replied to ie99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IBS is not a diagnosis it is a symptom and yes your Dad and Mom could be celiac. It wouldn't be a bad idea for them both to at least get the blood tests done. If you are not going to get an endoscopy then keep up with the diet for a couple of months even if the blood tests are negative. Your symptoms could well be celiac and if the diet helps then you have... -
ARCHIVED Dna Test Positive, Biopsy Negative
ravenwoodglass replied to confused mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No it's not strange. The reason why so many of us have symptoms that lasted for years is because most of us were misdiagnosed for years. For me it was over 40 years although I had celiac symptoms since childhood. Doctors are finally starting to test for celiac and starting to realize that false negatives are common with testing but not false positives. For...
