  1. Hi Helen, The article talks about celiac antibodies attacking proteins in nerve cells. That is not related to different foods causing a celiac like reaction (cross-reactivity). I have additional food intolerances besides wheat. rye and barley myself. But those foods cause different symptoms than my celiac reaction does. And those reactions don...
  2. Hi, Yes, the celiac tests are not accurate if you are not eating gluten prior to the testing. You need to be eating gluten daily for 12 weeks before the blood antibodies tests, and 2 weeks before the endoscopy test. Celiac disease is not an allergy so it doesn't show up on allergy tests. Allergies are caused by IgE antibodies and a histamine reaction...
  3. Hi Newkid, Welcome to the forum! Lyme disease is not an easy thing to eliminate. Your symptoms could be from lyme disease still. I'd follow up on that and see if it is still present. Celiac disease is not an allergy, so it doesn't show up on allergy tests. However it does involve the immune system so it may cause heightened immune responses...
  4. Naturemade has a pretty good gluten-free vitamin D pill. https://labdoor.com/rankings/vitamin-d
  5. Hi, Currently there is no way to be tested without having eaten gluten. Current celiac testing depends on detecting active antibodies to gliaden, a protein in wheat. When we stop eating gluten those antibodies eventually decline and are not found in the bloodstream. That is why we always suggest people get tested for celiac before going gluten...
  6. Got a turkey brining now. Also got a couple punkin pies in the oven. Found some Mi-Del brand gluten-free graham style pie shells at Chinamart for 2 bucks. We'll see how they work out. I thot this turkey cooking article on Huff post was interesting. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/smoked-thanksgiving-turkey-recipe-technique_b_778299 This one...
  7. I used to have facial puffiness and swelling ankles before going gluten-free.
  8. You can also try putting all gluten-free foods on the top shelf of the refrig. Or get a separate dorm size refrig for your gluten-free items.
  9. Hi Corrine, They make these iron fish to put in cooking water. It's a way to add a small amount of iron to your diet without taking a pill. Maybe it would work for you and not make you sick. https://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Iron-Fish-Natural-Source/dp/B01LX5S5FP/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 I don't eat canola oil or regular vegetable oils...
  10. The rule is they can't label a product gluten-free if the ingredients started out as gluten grains. That's why gluten removed beers can't be labeled gluten-free even though the brewers claim they are. So your autolyzed yeast extract should be gluten-free by the rules. Autolyzed yeast extract is a euphenism / another name for monosodium glutamate. Yeast...
  11. Right, the sealed gravy packets may contain gluten. But that doesn't mean the turkey itself has gluten in it. The gravy packets are easy to throw away, or give to someone else. I hear Bob Cratchett has a turkey but no gravy packet. So he might want it. It would be a good idea to check with the company to be sure. We don't have those stores around...
  12. Hi, It could be symptoms of celiac disease. The best thing to do is to get to a doctor who is familiar with celiac diagnosis. Ask for the full celiac disease antibody test panel. Don't stop eating gluten though as the tests depend on you being on gluten. Try an internet search for celiac doctor in your area. We have a doctors section of the forum...
  13. Hi, DGP is deamidated gliaden peptide. They can do DGP IgG and DGP IgA antibody tests. The DGP type tests are supposed to be more accurate than the older tests. The total or serum IgA is a test to determine if your body makes IgA antibodies at all. Some people;s bodies do not make IgA. So if you are IgA deficient, the IgA tests are not useful.
  14. Hi monicca, Welcome to the forum! It could be celiac disease. Some people with celiac don't show up on the standard blood antibody tests. You may be one of those cases. Or it could be that you are early on in the disease process and the antibodies aren't showing up in your bloodstream yet. The antibodies are mostly in the gut where they can...
  15. Going to a doctor is good advice. I suggest you write down what has happened with your health recently and give it to the doctor. Include dates and symptoms or change in symptoms. If you do an internet search for "celiac doctor (your city name)" you may find some ideas for good ones. Some doctors don't know much about celiac disease.
  16. Hi zx820, Since your symptoms improved when you went gluten-free, it seems pretty likely that you have a problem with gluten. There are other things that could cause weight loss, but the symptom improvement after going gluten-free points to celiac disease or NCGS (non-celiac gluten sensitivity). Sometimes people with Crohn's disease improve on a gluten...
  17. Hi zx820, Your digestion symptoms and pain could well be celiac disease. Unfortunately to be tested for celiac disease you need to be eating gluten daily. Two weeks for the endoscopy or 12 weeks for the blood antibodies testing. Your weight loss seems excessive for a small change in diet IMHO. But weight loss is common with celiac disease. Celiac...
  18. Hi, Since you have been gluten-free for 3 1.2 years you would need to do a gluten challenge to get accurate celiac disease test results. A gluten challenge means eating at least some gluten every day for 2 weeks before the endoscopy or 12 weeks before the blood antibodies. I would not recommend a gluten challenge while you are pregnant. Developing...
  19. Not that I know of for me at least. This link talks about it and lists several possible causes. One of them is gastrointestinal or digestive symptoms. So it sure sounds like a person with celiac could have high amylase levels. *********************************************************************************** https://www.medicalnewstoday.com...
  20. That's great you are feeling better Ennis. If I was closer I'd def consider coming by to snarf up some of your Thanksgiving foods. We will probably do a pretty laid back Thanksgiving here in SE Ohio. Turkey and sweet tater pies are on the menu so far. And eggs of some sort since they are coming out my ears at this point. Happy Thanksgiving!
  21. Welcome to the forum rosy lens! Recovery from celiac damage can be a slow process, but it depends on the individual. We are all different and our bodies seem to have a mind of their own sometimes. duh..! Anyway, recovery is faster the better a job we do of avoiding all gluten. It can help to avoid processed foods for several months and also dairy...
  22. Here is some info on DH and the typical lack of GI symptoms at first. If he has DH, he has celiac disease. He may not have gi symptoms, but his body is still making anti-gliaden antibodies. It's just that those antibodies are attacking his skin instead of his gut. That's why he doesn't have gut symptoms yet. But his bodies immune system will adapt to...
  23. I cleaned a cast iron pan by filling it with soapy water and boiling it awhile. Then scrubbing it with steel wool. No problems. I live with GE's (gluten eaters) now. I keep a separate supply of silverware but do rinse it before using since flour is used in the kitchen. I have my own pots and pans to use and my own small refrigerator. It works out...
  24. Interesting Dave. It looks like they started clinical trials in Sep-2018. It's been over a year so it seems like there should be some kind of results by now. There are already enzymes available that claim to break down gluten in the stomach. DPP-IV is one and it seems there is another, I just don't recall the name right now. Theses enzyme products...
