  1. Sometimes people go to a dermatologist. But they may not be the best source for info on DH. Usually GI's are more familiar with celiac disease. But often they aren't much help with it beyond diagnosis. If you can find a celiac support group or a local hospital or university that has a celiac center they may suggest a doctor. There is a section of...
  2. Sounds like you might have celiac disease. You want to get the celiac disease test panel, which checks several different type of antibodies. After a positive celiac test panel, they schedule an endoscopy. During the endoscopy they take 4 to 6 small bisopsy samples of the small intestine lining. Those biopsies are sent to a lab for review. If the biopsies...
  3. Hi JRScott Recovery from celiac disease damage may take a few years. But it can happen if we are careful with our diet. The gluten-free diet can fit well with T-2 diabetes IMHO. It can be helpful to cut way back on carbs and sugar when going gluten-free. Those foods can cause gas and bloating in the bowels which can be unpleasant and painful. Your...
  4. Hi kidprodigy, You might have celiac. The 2nd part of the diagnostic process is to have an endoscopy of the small intestine. The doctor should take 4 to 6 biopsy samples from the small intestine lining. Then they have a lab check the biopsies for damage typical of celiac disease. You should be eating at least some gluten every day for 12 weeks...
  5. Hi Carrie, No fee, but a limited number of people. You might want to look into fructose intolerance. It can be a problem when eating foods with fructose.
  6. Bummer, but it's good you tried. I hope you find a treatment that helps.
  7. Hi Cynthia, Celiac disease can cause malabsorption of nutrients, so you might not be absorbing calcium, vitamin D and boron adequately. Also some trace minerals may be low. All these deficiencies can cause bone health problems. Your doctor should be able to test for nutrient deficiencies.
  8. Hi, Welcome to the forum! You seem to have figured out your digestive problem. You are correct, for testing it's suggested to eat some gluten every day for 12 weeks to get the blood antibody tests, and 2 weeks for the endoscopy test. You might be able to get a positive blood test now, but it is not as likely. Stopping eating gluten causes the...
  9. Hi, I haven't tried Planquil. But I did have joint pain in my shoulders and hips. It went away after I stopped eating nightshades. Nightshades are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. Nightshades have alkaloid chemicals in them that some people can't process. So they build up and cause joint pain. So, I'm not sure if it would help you to stop...
  10. Hi, You don't need to eat a lot of gluten to keep the antibodies active for testing. The equivalent of about a slice of wheat bread daily is enough.
  11. It could be celiac disease causing your symptoms. To be tested for celiac disease you need to keep eating gluten. The celiac testing depends on the immune response being active. They take blood samples and check them for anti-gliaden antibodies. The 2nd part of diagnosis is to do an endoscopy and take 4 to 6 biopsy samples of the small intestine lining...
  12. Hi Jenni40, I had ankle swelling and lower leg swelling and feet swelling for a while before going gluten-free. Actually my hands would swell and face also. Swelling like that can be a symptom of allergies also. Anyway, my swelling went away after going gluten-free. You can get tested for celiac disease by a blood antibodies test. It is much...
  13. It took about 5 years for my symptoms to go away. Most of them at least. You may have a timeline you expect for your body to become symptom-free, but it may not be the same as reality. Mine certainly didn't match my expectations! The celiac blood antibody tests are pretty darn specific to celiac disease. They are tests to detect a reaction to gliaden...
  14. Hi Eric, It sounds like you have a taken a pretty good approach to going gluten-free. The first 6 months can be a roller coaster ride digestion wise. I agree with Ennis_Tx suggestion about eliminating soy. Actually, I suggest you eliminate any protein powders or weight/muscle gain powders and supplements for 6 months. It is best to avoid them...
  15. Hi Sam, Some people do ok with quinoa or buckwheat. Buckwheat is not actually wheat or related to wheat, it's just a name. Sweet potatoes/yams, bananas, plaintains, etc are options. Some gluten-free flour mixes use bean flour in them.
  16. Hi Sam100, Gaining weight with celiac disease is dependent on good diet and getting the immune response under control. The cleaner your diet is gluten-wise the better. The immune system can be pretty stubborn when it comes to fighting off invaders. It may take weeks or months for your immune system to settle down and your intestine to heal. Every...
  17. If you have DH you may flunk the usual blood antibody testing. People with DH deposit antibodies in the skin, so that's where they have to be tested. They test for DH by taking a small skin biopsy from next to a lesion/blister. DH is usually itchy and appears as symmetrical patterns on the body as in both elbows, both knees or other.
  18. Hi MeekoRacoon, Many doctors seem to sleep through the part of med school where they teach about celiac disease. Failure to properly advise for celiac testing is common. You do need to be on a daily gluten diet for 8 weeks before blood antibody testing per the University of Chicago Celiac Center. They even have a formula on how to calculate the amount...
  19. Another mask making video for the non-expert sewers out there. https://www.countryliving.com/life/a32196101/funny-face-mask-tutorial/ If you don't like putting a rubber band or elastic over your ears, try this. Attach a loop of cord or twine or whatever you like on one side of the mask. Make a small hook by bending a paperclip and tie it...
  20. That's why I don't go in the pizza place when my brother gets pizza Trents. I think the flour/gluten in the air can be ingested through breathing. AuntieE, you can get canned fish on Amazon.
  21. I take lisinopril. No problems with it gluten-wise.
  22. It could be you are reacting to something in your diet besides gluten. Oats are a problem for some celiacs. Dairy is a problem for others. I suggest you remove those 2 foods and see if it improves. You can also try some magnesium. But removing an irritating food could be the solution,
  23. Hi Bruce, I hope you got tested for celiac disease before going gluten-free. If you do want to be tested you have to be eating gluten for the testing to be accurate. The first 6 months of the gluten-free diet can be kinda rough. But is seems like a slow. steady improvement over that time is possible. Diet changes that help are sticking with whole...
  24. GFinDC

    No symptoms

Right, normally the blood antibody testing is done first, and then an endoscopy to confirm intestinal damage. You do need to keep eating gluten (wheat, rye, barley) until all testing is done.
  25. Welcome to the forum! My uncle is 92 years old and his teeth haven't snapped off. Except the ones that kind of rotted off due to chewbaccy use! So I think your GP is mistaken. Celiac can cause malabsorption of nutrients. So we can become low on minerals and vitamins that our bodies need to heal and maintain themselves. Some people get low...
