  1. There's no way to know what your antibody levels are without doing the testing. That's what the tests are for. Hopefully they will give you a clear positive result. If they are negative it could just mean the 3 weeks off gluten caused a misleading test result. You can buy antihistamines at the grocery store. Benedryhl is a common one and is not expensive...
  2. I live with gluten eaters and do fine with a shared kitchen. I keep some cooking pans in a separate area so I don't have to worry about them being used by others. I have my own silverware that I keep separate in a container and just rinse it with water before using. Washing any smooth ceramic should be fine. Metal is usually ok also unless it is scratched...
  3. Hi, I suggest not eating at any restaurants for the first 6 months. It takes time to learn the gluten-free diet. Also healing is not instantaneous and can take months to years. The less exposure to gluten in your diet the faster you will heal/recover. If you have to go to a restaurant take some food with you to eat. Things like apples, oranges...
  4. Right, other food intolerances can cause plenty of GI symptoms. The best way to find them is through an elimination diet IMHO.
  5. The doc may be right. After-all, celiac disease is a serious AI disorder! About the ankle swelling, did the doc suggest trying some anti-histamines? If it is an allergic response anti-histamines may reduce the swelling.
  6. Hi treehiker, It's fine to get more testing done. Just be sure to stay on a gluten containing diet until all testing is done. All celiac testing depends on you having gluten in your diet for accurate results. At the end of all the celiac testing, you may not have a definitive answer. In that case it is a good idea to try the gluten-free diet...
  7. You may have an allergy to wheat or something else also. I suggest that because swelling in extremities is sometimes an allergic response. But swelling can happen with celiac also. I used to have quite a bit of ankle swelling and face and hands too. It went away after I was gluten-free a while.
  8. Hi, It only takes one positive immune response to cause damage. The DGP IgA being positive is a real good indicator of possible celiac disease. The other test they do is an endoscopy to check for damage to the villi lining of the small intestine. But you need to be eating gluten for 2 weeks before the endoscopy. Celiac disease can be hard to...
  9. Hi, You should ask for the complete celiac disease panel, which includes DGP IgA DGP IgG TTG-IgA EMA IgA Serum / total IgA Celiac symptoms vary widely between people. Some people have no symptoms at all (silent celiac). I had alternating C and D, Bloating Gut pain, Insomnia, blotchy skin, joint...
  10. Wow, I've never tried silica powder seasoning Ennis! I guess I'll skip it too! Bummer on the silica leaking into your kale chips. I've never really paid a lot of attention to those silica packets myself. Hadn't even considered that they might leak into the foods. Definitely something to watch out for in the future though.
  11. Sorry EnnisTX, that sounds pretty rough! I hope you feel better soon!
  12. Well, I doubt it's a record, but it sure impressed me! That happened when I was early in my gluten-free diet, and didn't know I had a problem with dairy. I ate some cheese and vrooom! I wasn't even tired for 3 days. I found a story on the Army experimenting on using casein to keep soldiers alert. So I guess it can have that effect if it gets in the...
  13. Celiac can indeed cause lots of gas/bloating in the stomach and gut. I don't think there is a characteristic odor as the smell would be related to the food that was eaten and the bacteria consuming it so it could vary between people and gut biota. Celiac damage can interfere with digestion of any food, not just wheat, rye and barley. A typical problem...
  14. Yes, I used to have problems with insomnia. I assume you are eating gluten-free? I was awake for 3 and a half days one time before being able to sleep a few hours. My insomnia faded away after a year or so gluten-free. You can find threads discussing insomnia by doing a search of the forum. You may be reacting to other foods besides gluten. It is...
  15. @Fourgifts, How long has she been gluten-free? The recovery period from celiac damage can be a year or more. She should start feeling better over that time but it is not a fast process. And any little bit of gluten contamination sets the healing back. Staying away from processed foods and sticking with whole foods is helpful IMHO. It is also...
  16. You probably won't get an official celiac diagnosis without the endoscopy. But, yes, the treatment is the same regardless, a gluten-free diet.
  17. Looks like the guy is eating a bowl of Cheetos in Lite beer. Certainly an exemplary Whole Foods employee.
  18. Hi Von, Malabsorption shouldn't be permanent. After healing your gut should absorb nutrients ok. But it may be possible that some of us burn certain nutrients faster than other people too. Possibly because of genetics or possibly because of immune issues or the healing process. I was low on vitamin D for many years after going gluten-free. A...
  19. You may lose some water weight also. Celiac disease causes inflammation and swelling in some people. So you may find that you lose a some water weight as the inflammation goes away. One thing that some people report is a temporary increase in hunger after going gluten-free. That is not a bad thing and is usually not going to last for long. Your...
  20. Congrats Keight ! It is often difficult to get a celiac disease diagnosis. But you stuck it through and got the medical profession to do their job. ? That's probably about the most help you'll get from them though, a diagnosis. Sometimes they will set you up an appointment with a dietician who doesn't eat gluten-free. Very helpful, NOT Other times...
  21. Hi Brandon, Have you been tested for celiac disease yet? If not, you should wait on changing your diet until testing is completed. The celiac testing won't work accurately if you are off gluten. It is better to get the blood tests done right now, and then the endoscopy if the blood antibodies are positive. If you go off gluten before testing...
  22. Hi, Maybe try the Find Me gluten-free app for phones. It can show you restaurants the people have been successful eating at.
  23. You can try adding psyillium husks to your food for extra fiber. They can be added to just about any food. You can also look up lists of foods with high fiber to eat. Things like peas and sweet potatoes are some examples. We did have one person several years ago who claimed to be cured of celiac disease. They had a disease and had their bone marrow...
  24. Cycles is right, avoid the processed gluten-free baked goods and concentrate on meats, nuts, veggies and eggs. Some times people new the gluten-free diet will try to replace all their previous gluten favorites with gluten-free versions. But the gluten-free versions may not have similar nutritional value or even may have more sugar and starch. It can be...
  25. I like the Aldi Rosemary and olive oil gluten-free crackers. Just tried them this week and they have a lot of flavor. https://www.aldi.us/en/grocery-goods/quality-brands/livegfree/snacks-sweets/snacks-detail/ps/p/livegfree-gluten-free-rosemary-olive-oil-multiseed/
