Intestional Permability could a Vitamin Deficiency Cause It
GFinDC replied to Posterboy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/856598/supplement-overdose-vitamin-liver Overdosing on B-3 (niacin) can also cause bleeding in the brain per the linked article. So, while it is ok to take in moderate amounts, taking too much niacin can be detrimental to health. -
I've found a key factor in ' Curing Celiac Disease '
GFinDC replied to Zprime's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Some people don't test positive on any of the celiac blood tests but they still have celiac disease. The testing we have now is not 100% perfect. The villi lining of the small intestine is like little microscopic fuzz all over the surface of the inside of the gut. The villi absorb nutrients and even make some enzymes that help digest foods. Biopsy... -
Intestional Permability could a Vitamin Deficiency Cause It
GFinDC replied to Posterboy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My understanding is DH is caused by IgA deposits in the skin, not by lack of niacin in the diet. If you have some info that contradicts that I'd be glad to look at it. By info I mean a study showing niacin deficiency causes IgA deposits under the skin and DH blisters. Otherwise I consider your claim that pellagra causes DH to be erroneous. -

Right, just the opposite. The niacin deficiency is a result of these other diseases. -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pellagra I found this Wiki article on pellagra interesting. They say pellagra was once at epidemic levels in the USA in the South where lots of corn was eaten. Pellagra tended to follow corn around the globe. Corn has a from of niacin in it that can't be digested. So unless the corn is treated the people who depended... -

How long to feel better?
GFinDC replied to 42yroldceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Bummer on gluteny cream! Just to be clear, we need to avoid anything with wheat, rye or barley ingredients. Oats are also suggested to avoid for 6 months until you are somewhat recovered and familiar with the diet and how your body reacts to bad ingredients. A small percentage of people with celiac also react to oats, but not all do. So it's better to... -
New to Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to Kerry6's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Kerry6, Welcome to the forum! and to gluten-free eating! The simplest/best way to start the gluten-free diet IMHO is to switch to a whole foods diet, drop all dairy and oats, and get rid of all processed foods/baked goods from your diet. This leaves you with some simple foods like meats, nuts, veggies, eggs and fruit. If you can stick... -
How long to feel better?
GFinDC replied to 42yroldceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi again 42, You may have (DH) dermatitis herpetiformis also. DH is a skin form of celiac disease that causes an itchy rash usually appearing symetrically on hands, elbows or knees. The rash is cause by IgA antibodies in the skin. They test for DH by taking a small skin sample from next to a lesion. Only people with celiac disease get DH. There... -
How long to feel better?
GFinDC replied to 42yroldceliac's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi 42, Welcome to the forum! I started noticing changes within a week. But it took me a good 6 months to eliminate all gluten from my diet. I made a lot of mistakes when I first went gluten-free. Looking back I would have been better off to adopt a whole foods, unprocessed foods diet right away. I spent a lot of time reading food labels in the... -
Celiac test questions
GFinDC replied to chocolatesunrise's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you already had your vitamins and minerals checked. I suggest you try a 1000 IU Vitamin D pill and a small boron pill daily. These are what helped me get my vitamin D back up to normal levels. Vitamin D and boron and calcium all work together. A B-complex with B-12 is good way to go also. After... -
Endoscopy Tomorrow, And Terrified!
GFinDC replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had both the endo and colonoscopy at the same visit. It was easy, didn't feel a thing. They wheeled me into the procedure room and had me lay on my left side. Then they said something about a sedative and next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room. It is good to have some someone go with you to drive you home afterward. Otherwise you may... -
Ennis is right, some of us react to many other foods besides gluten. The continual irritation of the gut can lead to it reacting to other foods. Also oats and dairy are not a great idea for new gluten-free eaters. The damage to our villi make it hard to digest dairy sugar. And some of us react to oats just like we do to gluten. Being extra vigilant...

Taking Supplements/Vitamins
GFinDC replied to kanucme2019's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Right, getting tested for vitamin/mineral levels is valuable. Taking too much if a vitamin / mineral can be bad for you also. The fat soluble vitamins tend to get stored in the body. The water soluble vitamins tend to wash out daily, so overdosing on them is unlikely. Things I think are helpful are minerals, including iodine, boron, and selenium.... -
is this celiac??
GFinDC replied to TrailWalker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should be seeing a GI (gastroenterologist) for celiac testing, not an allergist. Celiac disease is not an allergy. Celiac is an AI (auto-immune) condition. Allergists are interested in IgE immune responses, and test for them. Celiac disease is either a ttg, IgA or IgG immune response. IgE responses can occur very quickly and allergists expect... -
News: World's first blood test for celiac disease in sight
GFinDC replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
The first blood test that doesn't require a long gluten challenge they mean. There are multiple blood tests already. They require a 12 week gluten challenge though. This new test may only require a day challenge. If it is developed and approved that is. -
You might find one on this page. https://doctor.webmd.com/find-a-doctor/condition/celiac-disease/new-hampshire

is this celiac??
GFinDC replied to TrailWalker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Trailwalker, The gluten challenge is 12 weeks of eating gluten before the blood tests, or 2 weeks of eating gluten before the endoscopy. So you didn't do the challenge long enough for accurate blood antibody testing. There isn't much of any treatment doctors can do for celiac disease. It really is the gluten-free diet that makes the difference... -
I am glad to hear she is home and gained a little weight! She is going to have a tough time recovering from celiac damage if she stays completely vegetarian though. The body needs protein to heal itself. It also needs a variety of vitamins and minerals and fats. Maybe she would find it acceptable to eat fish? Salmon, tuna, mackeral and sardines...

Does celiac disease cause severe bone pain?
GFinDC replied to Shayla21's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Shayla, In addition to vitamin D, you also need boron to boost retention of the vitamin D. Calcium citrate pills are easier to absorb than other forms of calcium. I take half a calcium citrate pill and a small boron pill daily and my hip pain has reduced. I also take tart cherry daily. Another possible cause of joint pain is nightshades. ...- 30 replies

Positive on 1 blood test
GFinDC replied to stephanie86's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Stephanie, Here is an article on the Marsh stages system of rating celiac damage. https://www.verywellhealth.com/marsh-stage-of-celiac-disease-562711 The doctors often can't see celiac damage while doing the scope. So they take biopsies (4 to 6) and send them a lab to be viewed with a microscope. If they do see damage during the endoscopy... -

"Weak positive" tTG IgA?
GFinDC replied to Augustina's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, The University of Chicago celiac center recommends 12 weeks of eating gluten daily before the blood tests are done. Two weeks of eating gluten is recommended before the endoscopy. That time period is called a gluten challenge. A weak positive is just that. But if you weren't eating gluten regularly for 12 weeks it may have been a lower result... -
Constipation/rash 2 months gluten-free? Potatoes?
GFinDC replied to blurryface's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Blurryface, Recovery from celiac damage can take months to years. Progress in healing depends on how good you are at keeping 100% gluten-free. But additional food intolerances can impede healing also. It's not impossible to notice additional food intolerances after going gluten-free and think they are new. And sometimes they are new. But other... -
I agree, she should not be consuming dairy at this early point in the healing process. I also agree she should be tested for food allergies asap. A good diet for most of us starting to eat gluten-free is meats, eggs, veggies and nuts. It may seem to be a little boring diet but the point is not to be a gourmet but to give the body a chance to heal. ...
