  1. I wash my grains with dish soap. I find that it works well. I put the grains in a colander and swish them around in the soapy water in the sink where I do my dishes and rinse a few times, and then I do a final thorough rinse. Then dry and grind. It is a lot of trouble to go to, but I am very sensitive to trace gluten and it is what I have to do to be...
  2. Yes, I have had that problem. I think that chickens roll around in their feed too much. I do much better if I wash it carefully first.
  3. Probably too late, but how about bring your own food?
  4. I am a super sensitive celiac. I was pretty athletic when I was younger, mainly skiing and ballet. I ran to condition for skiing. I got very sick before diagnosis and was unable to do much of anything. It would take me four days just to mow our 1/3 acre. It took me almost a year to figure out the diet enough, and to heal enough, so that I could exercise...
  5. Last time I looked at a box it had a note saying that it was processed in a facility that also processes wheat. Has that changed? Someone said that they are made in a dedicated facility.
  6. With my son, it took a long time to finally eliminate all the gluten in his diet. It is a process. You need to keep educating yourself. Some gluten free items are more gluten free than others. In our case, we needed a gluten free household. My husband kept leaving crumbs everywhere, and they would get to my son somehow. I hope she feels better soon...
  7. Some celiacs, myself included are sensitive to the protein in oats as well. Last I knew Bob's processes their gluten free oats in their gluten free facility so their products are ruled out for people like me. Could that be your problem?
  8. I get Teff from The Teff Company. www.teffco.com It is dedicated Teff only and they clean the harvesting equipment before use. Millet I get from Eden Organics. Some people have reported problems with this millet, so I wash it before using it. Quinoa I get from Ancient Harvest www.quinoa.net. It is all done in quinoa only facilities. Some people seem...
  9. It is possible that you are reacting to oats. They process their gluten free oats in their gluten free facility.
  10. You may be worrying about nothing. I am extremely sensitive. I don't eat processed foods and I wash everything. Still, I don't have problems with the dentist. I used to go to Dr. Brutton in Vancouver. He is near the UBC gates on 10th Ave. (unless he has retired.)
  11. I lived in Vancouver for 17 years, sister went to UVic and I went to the Island and various Islands a lot. I really miss it.
  12. Lisa, I didn't think that the initial replies that you got were at all what you deserved based on your post. Some odd things can go on here. As a mother with a sick child, you do all you can to keep him safe. It can be really hard when for instance you realize that you have been making your child sick with what you have been feeding him. I have been through...
  13. Sometimes even opening a new bag of something that you have been eating for months causes a glutening. Companies change ingredients sources, ingredients, processing techniques, etc. Things change all the time. This has happened to me. These are really hard glutenings to track down. Good luck.
  14. I also felt great when I first eliminated gluten. Then I started to show symptoms again. So, I eliminated gluten free foods that were made in mixed facilities and felt better again. Later on, I again started to show symptoms. Lyme disease was also suggested to me. In the end I found that I need to completely avoid processed foods, and foods grown on...
  15. Maybe you are demanding too much? When I went to school, everyone had cold lunches. There wasn't a facility to provide food and there weren't any microwaves. I didn't even consider asking for microwave privileges for my children. They already brought their own (cold) lunches before diagnosis, and after diagnosis, my son continued to do so. Sometimes...
  16. My son got the red ears before the diagnosis and before gluten free. Now he doesn't get them anymore. 10 years old at diagnosis. I have only heard of it as a symptom anecdotally.
  17. I agree with Richard. I think that glutenings resolve completely within 2 weeks. Ongoing symptoms are a sign of lack of complete healing, or ongoing gluten consumption. Initially my glutenings seemed to last a long time, but I think it was because I was still healing. I remember one glutening that seemed to last a month. Now, after 2 years gluten free...
  18. I reread your post and thought that I should tell you that I have gotten sick from airborne flour before. It lasted longer than a normal glutening. Maybe that is what got to him. Maybe you shouldn't bake with gluten grains anymore. It would be great for him if you could learn to bake with non gluten grains. Then he could enjoy what you bake too.
  19. After two years gluten free, my gluten reactions are much less severe. I only get sick for a day, not a week. I don't lie in bed wishing I were dead, I just have some stomach pain and D. There is hope.
  20. I don't think that you can know that you have eliminated all gluten unless you grow everything that you eat, and your farm is far away from gluten grain fields. Even then you would have to be careful about fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and mulches. You do best avoiding processed foods and washing everything else well.
  21. That not making it to the bathroom was happening to me for about 10 years until I finally got diagnosed. My idiot GP said that it was consistent with irritable bowel syndrome. Once it happened when I was volunteering at my son's school. Humiliating and embarrassing is right!
  22. I have the same problem with my son, diagnosed at 10, now 12. They do become better at controlling things as they get older. I don't try to reason with him much when he is in the middle of it. I think that it is like trying to talk to an alcoholic when he is in middle of bender. When he is calm we talk about ways of handling things. It is hard to get...
  23. It would start as early as 2 a.m. and continue every hour until mid morning. I am so grateful for my diagnosis!
  24. It really depends on how sensitive you are to trace gluten. Some can handle shared households and some (like me) can't.
  25. Me too. I got so tired of it that I also stopped eating almost all processed foods. It's the only way for us sensitives.
