ARCHIVED Official Diagnosis Just Came In
jenvan replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Recovery varies greatly from person to person. I believe most people see some sort of immediate improvement in atleast some form. However, feeling "normal" can take a year for those with more severe damage. I have been gluten-free since February. I am no longer constipated as I was for years...but I have no change in my energy levels or muscle pains yet... -
ARCHIVED Official Diagnosis Just Came In
jenvan replied to AmandaD's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey girl...welcome to the club officially now Moderate villi blunting describes the state of your villi. Know what those are? There is a scale used sometimes to rate the damage...I can't find it online at the moment...and rates villi from normal to completely flattened. It sounds like yours are not flattened, just blunted...which means the ends of... -

ARCHIVED Bath And Body Works And Wet Ones
jenvan replied to e&j0304's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shannon- How long has your daughter been gluten-free? I can't specifically speak to the antibacterial washes...but I stopped using all bath and body works products, simply because most of their stuff contains oats--the body washes definitely do. Some products you might try instead, if you end up switching, are California Baby--all natural, chemical... -
ARCHIVED Turkey
jenvan replied to swittenauer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sometimes, even gluten-free foods can cause problems for individuals. For whatever reason, I have been unable to eat turkey for years--it gives me horrible abdominal pain and gas--worse for me than any reaction with gluten ! So...if it is gluten-free...it may also just be a matter of problems with turkey itself... -
Amanda- Go here and read this past post on gluten-free lunch ideas, might give you more thoughts too: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Living Without--newest Issue
jenvan replied to celiac3270's topic in Publications & Publicity
I saw that review in my new issue and was disappointed too. Looks like someone needs to write a letter to the magazine... -
Sue- Glad you wrote a letter! You never know...I wrote a letter to one restaurant on a bad experience with their gluten-free menu, and they corrected the problem--educated staff, and send me a $50 gift certificate to come back Your letter may make it easier for others as well...

I second what kaiti said... you have to be your own and your family's advocate..as unfortunately, doctors can be mistaken! and stubborn it would make sense that he was testing normal about being on the diet--it would most likely confirm his diagnosis for celiac, not negate it! so talk to your daughter and share your concern... other autoimmunes...

I was looking at canned tuna this weekend (for my cat : ) and noticed the soy in the tuna too. I figured it was not okay then... But better let someone else answer b/c I haven't even offically started the diet yet ! Questions--before I start I am trying to figure out what I can eat. Sorry for all the questions--I feel like the book left a lot unsaid...

I second Elonwy--I'll lick a fingertip or a knuckle and use that...or if you're really good you can sort of strategically "spit" on the envelope too

ARCHIVED Let's Talk About Poop For A Minute.
jenvan replied to frenchiemama's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wandering Hermit-- IMO--the only real 'cure' for hemmorrhoids is to get "regular." I have you tried fiber, changing your diet? I know it can be really difficult to do that...I don't mean to make it sound easy. I had constipation and hemmorrhoids for years...and now after only becoming pretty 'regular' are the hemmorrhoids/irritated skin gone. In... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Comfort Yourself When Glutened?
jenvan replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Rest, watch funny shows like Kaiti mentioned... I'll put on some Sex in the City or Gilmore Girls... Focus on normalcy, because I will be there again, take a walk, even a slow one and get some fresh air. I also just taken everything slower and cut back on what I do. If I am really in a bad spot, I may choose to lay down and veg, rather than clean the...
