  1. You know, I have forgotten about how emotional I was at first. I tell you this not to brag, but to let you know that it's temporary. I honestly NEVER feel sorry for myself anymore. Oh I did at first! I cried and I ranted. I avoided the grocery store and I avoided eating with my friends. I threw back my head and shouted to the skies. And then I got...
  2. I usually point people to this website, and if they choose not to come, or to believe what they want to believe, I just let it go. In the end, we are all responsible for our own health, and while I'd like to help others I refuse to let it upset me when they ignore the truth. (I try to keep in mind all the folks who have tried to get me to quit smoking. If...
  3. I drink Folger's and I drink Dunkin' Donuts. Every day. Lots of it. I start my morning with it on an empty stomach. No problems whatsoever.
  4. Well, there's a front coming through. We're only supposed to get an inch or so but the temperature is going to plummet. It's about 55 degrees right now, but the rest of the week is supposed to be in the low teens on some days, single digits on others, and as low as 10 below at night. PLUS we're supposed to get 35 MPH winds for the next few days. And I...
  5. People believe what they want to believe. I know a celiac who gave up coffee because it is "cross-reactive"(myth), but still insists that celiacs can eat sourdough bread (worse myth). You can tell these people 'til you're blue in the face but they just won't listen. You can point them to reputable websites, but they'd rather believe the people who are...
  6. How long have you been gluten-free? When I first went gluten-free I could not eat any leafy greens at all. They went right through me, as did quite a few other foods. If you're still healing just about anything might set you off. And as for the insomnia, I had had it all my life, but shortly after going gluten-free it was gone. I now sleep like a baby...

  8. There has been a myth going around for years now that some dogs or cats are "hypoallergenic". And that's EXACTLY what it is - a MYTH. I know this for a fact. My Dad, who died from his asthma, was allergic to dogs. My sister got my parents a poodle because she had heard this myth. Daddy's asthma had gotten so mild he hardly ever had to use his inhaler. After...
  9. Chances are she also got some cross-contamination. Read the Newbie 101 threadhere to find out all the places gluten can hide.
  10. Sounds like you might have just caught a case of the "stomach bug". It's going around.
  11. OK, I am a smoker. I know that smoking could well lead to cancer, yet I smoke. But if smoking could lead to DH, I would have quit a long time ago. If the lack of symptoms and the threat of possible eventual cancer doesn't do it for you, go read a bunch of threads in the DH section here and realize that if you keep eating gluten, there's a good possibility...
  12. How long have you been gluten-free? Are you celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerant? When we first go gluten-free, just about anything can set us off. While we are still healing our guts are so sensitive even gluten-free foods will sometimes make us sick. Also, alcohol can be a problem for us because we are now absorbing things better.
  13. Not everyone gets the "classic" symptoms. My most prevalent symptom was psoriasis. Then I found out that my life-long insomnia was a symptom. AND my headaches, AND my frequent hiccups, AND the swelling in my feet. And brain fog? I thought it was the first signs of Alzheimers. Now if I get glutened, I WILL get digestive symptoms. On TOP of all the rest...
  14. Doughnuts. Lots and lots of doughnuts.
  15. Something like that would be really useful for those of us who have intolerances that are not "the big 8". When something doesn't have to be listed on the label if it was "used in processing", but it still leaves enough residue for us to react to, it could be a Godsend. (Of course I'm thinking about corn and my recent reaction to that vitamin C.) Happy...
  16. Yep. Not everyone can trace it back to a traumatic event, but a lot of us can.
  17. You say you have been on and off gluten. Were you on for a while before testing? If you were, it sounds to me that chances are good your tests will be positive. If you weren't, it sounds to me that chances are good your tests will be FALSE negative. In other words, I think the odds are good based on your symptoms and family history, that you do indeed...
  18. OUCH! No WONDER you're having problems. Coffee withdrawal is every bit (and maybe more) difficult to go through. To be dealing with both at the same time must be awful!
  19. Um, Cricket, I don't think any of those things will "kill" the protein. Only 600 degrees for 30 minutes or more will do that. BUT these things, after a good soaking to soften any dough residue that may still be on them, can be cleaned with good old soap and water, and that's all you really need. Not sure what a grain mill attatchment is or looks like...
  20. Yes it is gluten withdrawal, and it is not just a psychological thing, it is a very real physical thing. It will get better soon, but it will happen so slowly you won't notice, until one day (soon) you notice that you feel better. Hang in there, and welcome to the forum.
  21. If you keep a bag of chocolate chips in the fridge at work I can guarantee some of your co-workers will sneak a few. That would be bad enough for any person, but for a celiac, that means their gluteny hands will contaminate the whole bag. It would be better to have individually wrapped chocolate snacks. Or you could get some Lara Bars. They're small but filling...
  22. Hi! Welcome to the forum. I'm one of those who does not eat in restaurants, but that is because I have additional intolerances. It seem you do too, but there is no such thing as "cross-reactivity", no matter what you may have read on the internet. These other intolerances we have are actually something we have probably had all along, but they were masked...
  23. I am SO SO SO glad to hear this!!!!! You have been through so much, and you have helped so many people here. YIPPEEEE!! I am doing the happy dance for you!!!!
  24. https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/91878-newbie-info-101/#entry896943 OK, ALL of you who are considering eating someone else's cookin, read this. Click on and read all the links too. And if you think you STILL want to eat something a relative who doesn't have any experience with celiac made, remember, post-glutening you need to take extra probiotics, drink...
  25. If I call and ask nicely do you think he'll bring me a baby elephant?
