ARCHIVED Tendon Health Question
pricklypear1971 replied to eers03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ligament/soft tissue issues are a side effect of autoimmune disease, according to my doctor. I take a skew of supplaments, but her perspective is addressing autoimmune response is the best fix/stopper. For me, that means my effing thyroid (in addition to Celiac). I am under strict orders not to exercise more than every other day, and my massage therapist... -
ARCHIVED Can We Talk French Bread?
pricklypear1971 replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think it comes down to flour blend and technique. I made some using Jules' flour and it was by far the best. That said - it will never be gluteny French bread. I just don't try, don't worry about it. I prefer to eat/bake other breads that are different so I don't try to compare. I have a strange attachment to Chebe rolls. -
ARCHIVED Does Dh Ever Go Away?
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
No, gluten is the culprit. Stress is an exacibator. I know the two are almost impossible to seperate (especially in the beginning)...but it's true. I know it's hard to have faith (so to speak) that the dh will eventually clear, but if it's dh and you follow a gluten-free diet (modified to avoid anything else you're intolerant to) it will eventually go away... -
ARCHIVED My Son Needs Help.....
pricklypear1971 replied to bkboerst's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
To echo what Nikki said.... My son (11), who is not celiac (but may be one day) and may be ncgi, went with me to a gluten-free restaurant. He was totally psyched that he could eat anything in there and it was gluten-free and safe. What he REALLY liked, that I had no clue was an issue is that he could SHARE with me - that he wouldn't contaminate me or... -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie With Questions And 2 Glasses Of Wine

Squirmy is right, you can't rush healing. But you can screw it up - stay out of the bleach. Look, I know how desperate and adrift you feel. We all do. We've been there. But the best advice is to keep it simple. I ignored sage advice and tried too many things at once...and that was bad because a body under stress can only handle so much - even a good... -
ARCHIVED Question About Supplements
pricklypear1971 replied to jasonD2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
From what I've read about activated charcoal it binds everything...which is why some people use it after a glutening to relieve symptoms. I doubt it's a good idea to take it on a regular basis if you already have nutrient absorption issues. I understand you're trying to relieve distress, but from what I've read, charcoal probably isn't a long term solution... -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie With Questions And 2 Glasses Of Wine
pricklypear1971 replied to Blaze422's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I found I needed to keep mine well moisturized. If they dried out, they'd crack and bleed. That said, my rash created a blanket effect...and individual sores may vary. I used Vanicream and Vaseline. I also packed clean washcloths under my arms at night during the weeping hours (my blisters would swell and pop nightly), then pack ice packs on them after... -
ARCHIVED Need Opinions
pricklypear1971 replied to Suffering's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
OMG yes. Me. My autoimmune stuff cycles. One reason I never correlated it with what I ate. Yes, full antibody panels NOW. Make sure they do celiac biopsies, not just a look. -

There are celiac support groups, specifically for kids. You could both use the resources. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie With Questions And 2 Glasses Of Wine
pricklypear1971 replied to Blaze422's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ditto what Squirmy said. And when I first started reading about dh, I read about a man who was on it for over a year and had breakouts regularly, even with gluten-free, LI, etc. Sometimes dh is a tough nut to crack. My experience was that iodine had a particular frenzying effect, as did anything that "set me off" - some sals, some histamines....what I would... -
ARCHIVED Dishwasher/almost Gluten-Free Kitchen Question
pricklypear1971 replied to livinthelife's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have dishwasher issues. I didn't in the beginning, but I get a slow cc effect - takes a few weeks. My solution, since there's very little gluten in my house, is to hand wash those few gluten items with soap and disposable towel...then stick in dishwasher. I also have hard water, and we are constantly cleaning residue from out of the dishwasher... -
ARCHIVED I'm Not Hypothyroid... Right?
pricklypear1971 replied to moosemalibu's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry to tell you this, but you were not adequately tested for thyroid disease. Your doctor did not run free t3 or reverse t3. T3 is made from converting t4...but if your thyroid isn't working properly, well, chances are it won't be converting properly. So, next time add free t3, and reverse t3. If reverse t3 is high, that's another sign your body isn't utilizing... -

ARCHIVED Sick, Shocked And Scared
pricklypear1971 replied to biancad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm sorry this is happening. When you say sub clinical hypo...are you being treated with thyroid meds t3/t4 ? Many, many symptoms if thyroid disease overlap with Celiac. And, if they are only using your TSH to dx your thyroid, free t3/t4 tests may reveal more. I would find a good thyroid doc to address these issues along with celiac disease. I would also...- 18 replies

ARCHIVED Trader Joes Cocoa Powder And Mixing Bowl Question
pricklypear1971 replied to Ashcat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use TJ's cocoa and have used it for years. No problem. My glass bakeware was in pretty good condition, and I didn't have much. I kept most of my metal bakeware and since I line pans for gluten-free cooking (so they won't stick) I continu to use them. I did break down and buy a new bundt pan, and springform pans. No lining there and they were pitiful... -
ARCHIVED Shared Kitchen "review And Renew"
pricklypear1971 replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've found (if gluten is eaten and dishes are involved) I have to wash with soap/water/disposable towel THEN put in dishwasher. Dishwasher glutened me. Yes, we run that cleaner stuff through it. -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie With Questions And 2 Glasses Of Wine
pricklypear1971 replied to Blaze422's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
When my dh started it wasn't bilateral and it didn't itch. It also looked like scabies, especially when treated with steroids. The first few breakouts weren't very itchy (I'd say 3-4), but they escalated. I was using a minuscule amount of steroid cream - less than what covered a qtip - and it affected the rash. Your mileage and effect may vary. Iodine... -
ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hey Abby, sorry I wasn't around. If you need me just pm me! Glad things are getting better. Dh is a weird combo of "one day at a time" and "reassess in two weeks". And sometimes it takes others telling you it looks better, or you act differently. It's all so hard to wrap your brain around. It is "a thing" to rebuild your life after gluten/dh. Really.... -
ARCHIVED Nervous About Family Vacation... Help!
pricklypear1971 replied to MYSweetPea's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've had mild, lingering weird stuff for two weeks. I'm just 'off' - stomach a bit off, headaches, gas, now vertigo, allergies. I never got one big hit but a low level for two weeks. Ugh. Everyone is different. Cross your fingers.- 6 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free For 20 Years With Rash From Hell
pricklypear1971 replied to Simone52's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Oh, you don't have to order it! They provide it free, online, as far as I know. Open Original Shared Link I saw results with a few days, BUT THAT WAS JUST ME. I would say any improvement is a good sign. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free For 20 Years With Rash From Hell
pricklypear1971 replied to Simone52's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Non iodized salt is fine. Iodized salt is out. Read the box and see if they add it. Some people are fine with sea salt, others not. Most sea salt is low in iodine...but I think it depends on where they source it. Some sea salts put the trace mineral content on the box, like Real Salt (which is low). Be careful if salty processed foods like chips. I believe... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free For 20 Years With Rash From Hell
pricklypear1971 replied to Simone52's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I didn't try dapsone - by the time we figured out the gluten/rash thing I also figured out the iodine thing...and mine has been in remission. I'm also allergic to sulfa drugs... Do ensure your Doc does regular bloodwork to monitor your reaction to dapsone. Some people do have reactions. -
ARCHIVED Is It Normal To Constantly Be Starving?
pricklypear1971 replied to Renegade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are still starving after eating you may have a low glucose issue (which is common with ai and adrenal issues). Try this. Next time you're still starving (after eating a full, healthy meal) eat about 6-12 ghiradelli semi sweet chips (yes, they're gluten-free but maybe not DF, and not sf). If you can't eat ghiradelli try Enjoy Life. Of you respond... -
I had the same thought this season. Didn't notice a reaction. So good so far?

ARCHIVED I Have So Many Questions
pricklypear1971 replied to ItchyAbby's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I was not reactive to glutenings, and I'm still not (knock on wood). I started healing immediately after going li. In two weeks my skin was healed - no new spots and scabs had fallen off. When I'd get too much iodine, post healing...like at thanksgiving, it took 2 or so days to flare. Iodine is cumulative for me. I get a flare from flu or cold viruses...
