ARCHIVED Relationships And Gluten..help!
happygirl replied to bremac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Bre: I think it all depends on how you present it....and that doesn't apply just to dating! Its not any different than having diabetes, or a peanut allergy, etc. There isn't any need to hide those medical conditions, so no need to hide this! Its not "who" you are. You just have to eat a certain way so you can be YOU . Its not something to hide... -

ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
happygirl replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Carla, Let's see...this weekend, not so good. As I posted earlier, got sick on Friday afternoon at work. Saturday, did so-so, but we were out all day (at a huge concert), and I think it was too much for me. Yesterday, we were at church in the afternoon, and I started getting sick....neck, arms, hands, head, then by the end of the evening, my stomach... -
Munky: Here a couple things I thought of--- 1. Although it seems like a lifetime, being gluten free for three weeks, in the grand scheme of things, is a really short time. If you do indeed have Celiac, your body has almost definitely not healed yet. So even if you have been 100% gluten free for the past three weeks, your body has not healed nor returned...

ARCHIVED Celiac & Lactose Intolerance
happygirl replied to JennyC's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Some Celiacs are "temporarily" (short term) lactose intolerance, until they heal. After this, they can re-introduce dairy and generally do well with it. Some can't handle dairy very well after being glutened. Others are lactose intolerant permanently, just like there are people with LI who aren't Celiac. Some people never have any problems at all... -
ARCHIVED Modified Food Starch
happygirl replied to Joanne11's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Joanne: The 2006 Food Allergen Labeling Law is a great help to Celiacs! Products must list any sources of the 8 main food allergens, one of which is wheat. So, if it says modified food starch, and does not list wheat, it does not contain wheat. Very often, it is corn (but, corn is not an 8 main allergen, so its not required to be listed, although it... -

ARCHIVED Recall - Frito's Chips (wheat/casein)

for people who have anaphylactic reactions to casein and wheat (i.e., true allergies), this is important information to know-it IS life threatening. -

I see you Mia Rachel, that is a really sweet gesture on the part of your work. Having that support makes all the difference. A few weeks ago, I completely broke down in my boss' office....poor thing, I think I traumatized him. But, it means a lot to me that I have co-workers who do their best to help me. I am not sure if I am having a normal... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Not Being "normal"
happygirl replied to alamaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I cannot eat out because I am so sensitive to minute amounts of gluten, so I bring my food with me. A few weekends ago, hubby and I went to a sports bar, he ordered wings, and I ate my pizza, and we watched the game. Creativity and changing routines is part of the Celiac game. Hang in there---we all understand. Hugs to you. -

ARCHIVED Not Sure What To Do
happygirl replied to Swthrtpookie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Find another doctor, and tell them that you want the full Celiac blood panel run. I am sorry that your doctor is overlooking the fact that Celiac is the most common autoimmune disorder, and yet 97% of American Celiacs don't know that they have it. The problem is not the patients, but the doctors---NIH just launched an awareness campaign about Celiac...for... -
ARCHIVED Preschool Owner With Celiac Child
happygirl replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Strawberry, I don't think many places require a dx, because many parents don't have one...they learned through dietary response. Testing is not always accurate, and just having the child feel better is enough for many parents (I mean, thats the goal for parents!) So having the doctor's note can be tricky. But----the mother should have sat down and had... -

Folate is folic acid, essentially (you take folic acid to increase your levels of folate.) I have done the breath test (haven't I done them all?) Mine involved drinking a small amount of sugary goo (kind of a syrupy consistency). I breathed into a bag before it, then drank it, then at some regular intervals (like every 15 minutes). Took maybe 2 hours... -
I would click on the restaurants tab and there are quite a few threads about NYC...hopefully some of them will have some suggestions near you. There are a couple expert NYC Celiac eaters on this board----jkmunchkin is one of them. Enjoy! Laura

ARCHIVED Follow-up Testing - What Should Be Done?
happygirl replied to GeneC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
from celiacdiseasecenter.columbia.edu: 7. Monitor serum antibody levels Patients are advised to have follow-up antibody levels measured at 6 and 12 months. Most patients have normal levels by that time though it may take up to 3 years to normalize in some individuals. It is reasonable to assess antibody levels annually. This will serve to monitor adherence... -
ARCHIVED Preschool Owner With Celiac Child
happygirl replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow, when I have kids one day, I hope that our pre-school teacher will care as much. I think in the coming years, more child care providers are going to have to learn about this, becaus Celiac awareness is being raised. When the providers are heating up the food, are they using clean utensils to serve it up (i.e., not a utensil that just stirred somebody... -

ARCHIVED So What Do You Tell People?
happygirl replied to chocolatelover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
important to note that your tests say you don't have it...but that doesn't mean you actually don't. (just food for thought. gluten free of course)
