  1. I'm pretty sure I got glutened by kissing my husband after he ate a roll one day. He's careful now to wipe his mouth off before kissing me, but I do worry about what lurks in his beard!
  2. I was diagnosed last March, and I've been pretty confident it was caught on the early side -- I had 'mild villous atrophy" and it was "in patches". My symptoms were inconsistent, sometimes GI, and in retrospect -- I see that the hives and itchiness I'd been experiencing were probably related. However, once about a month before my diagnosis and again...
  3. Thanks, everyone - I received a reply from Axelrod's that their cottage cheeses are, indeed, gluten-free! You have no idea how happy a (relatively) small thing like this makes me -- I'm going home and having a big old container of Easy-Dieter.
  4. Before my diagnosis, this was by far one of my favorite snacks -- I loved it even more than ice cream! When I scanned it with my Shopwell app, it said that it was NOT gluten free due to "modified food starch" on the ingredient list, so I've been afraid to try it. There was no info on Axelrod's website, and I've e-mailed them, but I bought some before...
  5. I'm with bart and adelaide on this one - unless she has a history of being insensitive, or this falls under "I'm staying with you and, therefore, treating you and your family to dinner in return." category. I will frequently just have a drink while sharing dinner with folks so that I'm still part of the party. And, as for eating before, you could have just...
  6. I know that distilled liquor is generally considered gluten free, but I also read that some cachacas have carmel coloring in them, and so that makes them risky. I'm trying to find out information on Pitu Cachaca (which I think is shelf sugar cane rum imported from Brazil) as my boss's favorite happy hour drink is made from it, and well, I'd like to partake...
  7. Thanks, Laura, That's very helpful! - I haven't been back since that time. Are the chips already pre-packed in bags, or do they reach into a bin with their gloves on?
  8. So, I think I may have been glutened a last Wednesday or Thursday, and today - Sunday, I'm noticing a number of red spots and even lines on my forearms and the top of my back. I've been gluten-free ever since my diagnosis in March and my follow up endo and blood work showed near full recovery of my villi. I don't recall getting DH before dx, but i do remember...
  9. Has anyone tried Murray's seasoned gluten-free Turkey Burgers? My grocery just started selling these, they are labeled gluten-free, the ingredients looked safe and there were no cc warnings. I made one tonight for dinner, over leftover rice from the Indian restaurant (which I've had for two nights now with no problem, gluten-free soy sauce and chopped up...
  10. I did this and called the caterer ahead of time. They had a plate ready for me. If you want to be discreet, tell them you'll make yourself known to them when you arrive (get there a little early) and that way they can get you your plate quietly. Worked very well for me. Other times, I've just put a Kind bar or two in my bag, taken a plate of food...

    ARCHIVED Dim Sum

I agree that with others that this sounds way too risky. My husband wanted to order Chinese last night and said "It looks like there are a lot of things on the menu that are Gluten Free, I'm sure they'd be ok." Then when he was ordering his he asked 'do you have anything Gluten Free', and they asked 'what is Gluten Free?' That was enough for him to believe...
  12. I actually appreciate footnotes like this. There are many people eating gluten-free for other reasons (whether we agree with those reasons or not) and clearly Perkins has decided to cater to them, but that the effort required to make the place safe for Celiacs is too much. They are making it clear (unlike a lot of other restaurants that you just have to...
  13. My doctor said I would gain weight once healed because now I would be absorbing my food. As I'm already heavy, this was not good news, but the consequences of not treating the celiac are far, far worse -- so I'm doing my best to eat healthy and keep my calories in check. However, I will say that seems like a lot of dairy (cheese, sour cream and yogurt...
  14. Thanks, everyone - was just wondering what the 'normal' way to make them was. So far, no reaction, so I think I'm good.
  15. I was accidentally served candied pecans at a restaurant that was being otherwise careful. Menu just said 'pecans'. Anyone know the chances that the glaze on he pecans had gluten? It's about an hour later and I haven't reacted, but I had inconsistent symptoms pre-diagnosis. Thanks.
  16. I was diagnosed about the same time as you -- please hang in there. This reading labels thing really stinks (especially now that I'm old enough to need reading glasses to do so -- every single time!). And, for the record, while I never got glutened at Lilli's 57, after eating there a couple of times, I decided it wasn't good enough to risk it. For a...
  17. I haven't read every post, so forgive me if I've missed something -- but I think unless you are one of the super-sensitive ones, or you've been struggling, undiagnosed, for a long time, you can take things a little easier -- I only have my own cutting board, butter and toaster. Everyone knows not to use those. I do have a good dishwasher, which helps...
  18. Thought I'd share two recent experiences, for those who live and visit Midtown Manhattan: Ruby Foo's (somewhat fancy pan-Asian) had a decent Gluten Free menu. Though only a few items on it (3 entrees, a couple of apps, and a couple of desserts - including crumb cake!) They seemed to take it all very seriously. Every dish I got came out with an little...
  19. The big issue for me at Starbucks is that FOR SOME REASON, every single server insists on holding my coffee at the lid, getting their germy hands all over my sip top. Why can they not grab the cup from around the cup itself - they 've got sleeves on them. Why oh Why?
  20. I know they're not everywhere, but here in office-land Manhattan there are many Pret a Mangers. Last week, the Pret near my office introduced a whole bunch of new salads, several of which they claim to be gluten-free, as well as a gluten-free tag on their shelf cards where appropriate. I'm not a super-sensitive Celiac, but so far I've tried the falafel...
  21. One reason not to jump to conclusions about other intolerances is that, after a while, you're going to want as much variety as possible in your diet. I'd take it slow and get the Celiac ironed out and eliminate as little as possible other than gluten. Once the diet gets too constricted it will start to feel really difficult.
  22. Things may have changed. It wouldn't be that hard to make some gluten-free MREs, so if the draft were reinstated, they might treat Celiac differently than in the past -- maybe dependent on how badly they need soldiers.
  23. I, too, would splurge on gluten-free treats when I was first diagnosed. It lasted a few months, and I still struggle with it. I think I was so afraid that i wouldn't be able to find 'safe' foods at my next meal, so I'd better binge now so I won't be hungry. Well, I realize now that there's plenty out there for me, and I want to start eating healthier,...
  24. What might make it a little easier when you're looking for foods that don't explicitly say "Gluten Free" is that you're looking for things WITHOUT wheat, barley, rye and (for now) oats, in them. Many things won't say "gluten" as an ingredient, but they might say one of the above. (There are also a few more complicated ingredients to look for -- you can...
