Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

Everything posted by Nikki2777

  1. Thanks. I'm dealing with many of the same issues for an upcoming family wedding. I don't know that I would have told the host, but I would definitely tell the caterer. I really do wonder about the cost per plate - I'd love to offer my cousin that I won't eat at all if she can save the cost of my meal. Chances are I'll put a banana or another snack in...
  2. This sounds delicious, and easy! Thanks.
  3. Polenta is a nice alternative to breakfast carbs, mix in a little proscuitto and serve on the side with cantaloupe.
  4. My immediate family was very supportive, but my mom was initially dismissive. I broke down and told her that this was really really hard to do (stick with the diet) and that I needed her support. Luckily she had just learned how to use The Google and did some research and did a complete 180. Now she asks me about everything she makes for me and my family...
  5. When I was in my teens and early college days, I was finally diagnoses with 'spastic colon' for recurring pain just below my right breastbone. The doctor that finally diagnosed it made the pain appear by pushing a spot in my lower abdomen (weird, right?) and prescribed a muscle relaxant for when the attacks occurred. By my early 20s it pretty much went...
  6. Wait? Are you talking about the rotisserie chicken? That would be such good news. My husband usually does the Costco runs, and I've been wondering about that!

    ARCHIVED Risoterria

It's worth the extra money just to go to a restaurant where I don't have to worry at all. Even at places known to be celiac friendly, I still worry a bit. At Risotteria they told me that the few things that are not gluten-free are made elsewhere and brought in prepackaged. Quite the reversal!
  8. One thing I've found is that even well-intentioned restaurants don't think about soy sauce in marinades when deciding if something is gluten free. I got very sick from a steak at a restaurant that really seemed to be going out of the way to meet my needs and seemed very knowledgeable. The steak was delicious and only in retrospect did it occur to me that...
  9. I'm just wondering if anyone thinks they might have gotten glutened by new Colgate Advanced Sensitive + Whitening toothpaste. My husband bought this by accident, and suddenly I was getting symptoms. It's the only thing I could identify as being different, so I just stopped using it and the symptoms went away. No idea if this is the culprit as I do eat...
  10. I only know that when I was first diagnosed 3 months ago, I asked at my local Sbux and was told it was not gluten free. I don't think I actually read the label, but I can't recall honestly (I was investigating a lot of things that first week). Does it say on the website?
  11. The only upside of Celiac Disease for me: When I wasn't gluten-free I only allowed myself potato chips once or twice/year. Now that I have Celiac Disease, sometimes potato chips are the only thing I can find to eat when I'm out and about. So, I let myself indulge, guilt free!
  12. The vanilla syrup is NOT gluten free. One of the saddest things I had to give up
  13. Chipotle: Most of their food is gluten-free. Get the bowl- obviously. Oddly the guac is not gluten-free Really? I thought the flour tortillas were the only thing not gluten-free at chipotle. Is that new?
  14. Ok, so after trying some certified gluten-free pistachios, at the suggestion of some posters here, I can reliably say I have some sort of sensitivity to pistachios - they upset my stomach and give me some mild D the next day. What I'm not sure I understand is does this reaction, which is so similar to the reaction I have from gluten, mean that my villi...
  15. Mitzi - Schar makes a pretty good facsimile - the Deli Style bread. It's my go to bread right now. For me, I miss a real croissant, and the getting madeleines to dunk in my Starbucks coffee. But mostly I miss the convenience and spontenaety (sp?) of being able to decide 'when i get there' what to have. Or grab whatever strikes my fancy at the moment...
  16. Still new to this and absent-mindedly licked an envelope shut this morning. Could I have gotten glutened? It was a Caliber brand (distributed by CVS, I think). So far, I feel ok, though my mouth may be becoming a bit achy (one of my symptoms, but maybe I'm imagining it) Thanks.
  17. So - Costco rotisserie chicken IS gluten free? Oh, happy day
  18. The toaster alone could be getting you. I don't go crazy at restaurants but there are always crumbs in toasters. That and lipstick should be your first stops, but yes, you need to get more serious.
  19. Thanks everyone, hoping to try it out this weekend. I'll report back.
  20. Thanks - yes, I'm hoping to resolve this without HR, but I'll go to them if I can't. I believe I'm the only person with Celiac in the company, but a very senior exec is following the SCD so I might enlist help from him (I'm pretty sure his meals are prepared privately - I'm just lowly middle management). I've been bringing my lunch most of the time...
  21. This is interesting. I'm trying to get my cafeteria at work to start making some gluten-free options available. Technically, they're available now (salads, baked potatoes, etc.), but no care is taken to prevent or lessen the chance of cross contamination so I rarely eat there since my diagnosis. I've considered raising the threat of ADA action with them...
  22. Oh, and a banana is my go to 'meal' when in a place without many choices, like a deli or Starbucks.
  23. Good thread. I didn't know about the Nature Valley Almond Bars and I'm looking forward to trying them. My kids love the Oat and Honey version. For me: Go Picnics Cheese Sticks Green Mountain Gringo Tortilla Strips & Salsa Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Roast Beef, with shredded cheddar on a Corn Tortilla Edy's Fruit Bars
